I have been to this lake several times, in summer and winter and I'm always amazed at its beauty. This time we camped by the lake. It's about 4 hrs easy hike from Mikro papigko village. Astraka hut is good for night stay. We saw plenty of Balkan chamois and baby dragons in and around the lake.

You have to walk 4 to 5 hours to reach Drakolimni. It worth every effort. There are 4 spring on the path but the sun will definitely be a problem

Trek from Micro Papigo takes about 4 hours depending on your condition. There are 4 shelters along the way, where you can sit and refresh your own supplies, and for three of them the water is flowing to add / during my visit in September 2018 in one of them water did not flow/. After about three hours, you will come to the Astraka Mountain Lodge, where you can also stay overnight. As you continue to the lake, you must first descend a little to the valley to get up again on the other side. And even if you feel like you can not, it's worth it. The lake is at 2100 m. and its surroundings are some great views. During the journey to the lake, you will often encounter a flock of sheep or grazing horses.

I did this hike with my 58 year old mom. It took us 3 hours walk from mikro papingo to the refuge, another hour and a half to the lake. The way down was a little shorter. All in all a 9 hour hike, very physically demanding. The ascent is very steep and we took a break every so often to catch our breath. The views from the top part of the trail leading up to the refuge were amazing, but we were a little dissappointed with the lake (maybe because it's the end of the dry season). In retrospect, we would have skipped the lake, just going up to the refuge and back.

Amazing glacial pool surrounded by mountains and overlooking the Aoos gorge. Still with snow on the shores in mid-June. You are not meant to swim as this disturbs the newts (which are neotenic). Lovely flowers on the walk to it from the Astraka Refuge
