Trek from Micro Papigo takes about 4 hours depending on your condition. There are 4 shelters along the way, where you can sit and refresh your own supplies, and for three of them the water is flowing to add / during my visit in September 2018 in one of them water did not flow/. After about three hours, you will come to the Astraka Mountain Lodge, where you can also stay overnight. As you continue to the lake, you must first descend a little to the valley to get up again on the other side. And even if you feel like you can not, it's worth it. The lake is at 2100 m. and its surroundings are some great views. During the journey to the lake, you will often encounter a flock of sheep or grazing horses.

The trek to Drakolimni is hard and you have to be in good shape. But it worths every effort. It took us four hours to climb and another three and a half hours the way back. The view on the Timfy Mountain is unique and breathtaking. One of the most beautiful treks we have ever made.

It's a 2 mile walk from the refuge. ~3 hrs round walk. Don't waste your time. On the way to Tseplevo you can see same more impressive lake.

I have been to this lake several times, in summer and winter and I'm always amazed at its beauty. This time we camped by the lake. It's about 4 hrs easy hike from Mikro papigko village. Astraka hut is good for night stay. We saw plenty of Balkan chamois and baby dragons in and around the lake.

I gave this 4 stars only because I want to warn people about the way up there - It is not easy! It took us a whole day going up to the refuge.
But other than that - The experience is just amazing! The view at each point of the climbing is breathtaking! At the top, there is a refuge to stay the night if needed, very nice dinner and good continental breakfast. We did the climb to the refuge, stayed the night there and on the next day we continued to the lake. The route to the lake is a bit easier than to the refuge.
Ohhh and the lake - so so beautiful, the picures don't represent what you see there!
So in bottom line - If you're not afraid of hard climb - than don't miss this trip!

I am not a professional hiker nor am I a hiking enthusiast. The hike is tough and you must be prepared for a walk 5 hours up even though it states around 4. Did not use a hiking pole but I am sure it will help a great deal and reduce strain on knees.

You will need to spend almost 5hrs up to see the lake. Prepare to dip in the afternoon if you are not afraid of the cold waters. Some found it exciting to just jump in and swim and scream.

Along the way you will spot some creatures like goats & sheeps or shepherd dogs. Be careful they are wild and have their temperament.

Only a refuge stop after 3 hours. Take a quick rest and move on. The road ahead is still long to the lake. Take note of weather conditions too.

I must say the lake is average looking. Though photo turns out nice somehow but it is average looking. Perhaps if u camp overnight looking at stars or look at sunrise in morning it can be really amazing. In the afternoon it was alright.

Along the way there are water points maybe every 40min to 1 hour. At certain stop maybe no. Bring 2 of 500ml water is enough with some snacks to last you. Walking on rocky terrains is tough be careful of rocks and knee strain. Also many "natural fertiliser" from animals along the path, walk steadily.

The scenery along the way can be very beautiful at times when you look up or look beyond, behind u as u pause for a break to check your surrounds.

I would strongly recommend walking poles if planning to visit this little lake, it is a long uphill slog from Papigo - allow at least 3 hours, but there are a number of springs on the way so you do not need to carry a lot of water, and the nearby refuge sells food. Some nutters run the route. The path is clear and there are occasional signposts, and the wildflowers are amazing. The lake is a lovely spot when you eventually reach it, there are loads of cute little newts that give it its name, and the water is cool but lovely to swim in, the chances are you'll be pretty hot by the time you get here. On the far side of the lake is the most terrifying view I have ever seen - you are 2000 metres up. I had to lie on my tummy to look at this. Picnic spots don't get much better than this.

On the way to Drakolimni there is a mountain shelter. Use it if you have time. It will make your trip less tiring. We decided to make the hike non stop. It is basically four hours uphill hike from Papigo until the Drakolimni and then 4 hours downhill. It is a hard hike. The route is stone and pebbles so its hard on the feet and knees. It was a very nice hike and Drakolimni was beautiful. I suppose you have to visit once you have heard about it. But to be honest, after such a hard hike, I expected something a lot better. Then again, I have visited many places on my hikes so it is getting a bit difficult to give very high rates. But it was beautiful. We went in May when there was still snow. I don't think I would have liked it as much in summer.

Myself and my partner visited this lake last november and found a nirvana in the mountains! We had the lake to ourselves, granted we woke up early (0530) and left the mountain refuge to get to the lake just before sunrise. Make sure you go there early to avoid the crowds and to have amazing photo opportunities. The lake is simply stunning and will forever be ingrained on my brain.

A Greek friend once told me that this is the most beautiful place on Earth and she is a globe trotter, so I went to Drakolimni and must say that it is certainly one of the prettiest places I have seen in the world. The hike from the Astraka refuge takes around 1 hr 30 min at normal pace and offers amazing views of Astraka and Tymfi mountains. The lake itself is small surrounded by huge mountains. I did see the small dragon like creatures around the lake and plenty of chamoise deer. Though this time around the lake was completely frozen allowing us to dance upon the ice
