Part of the temple complex in Osian

Not as well cared for as they should be

For such an ancient site it should have more care given to it

It is a beautiful temple with Kamasutra posed statues in the outer facade of the inner sanctum. But it is a pity it is located in a horrible locality with uneducated people. We were thr in deepavali week and we saw way too much waste from the fire crackers. I cant believe they can burst crackers inside the temple !! Also the kids from the neighbourhood are horrible. There were 7 to 8 of them from 8 to 12 years age. They were following other foreign tourists, looking under there skirts (modest length), and when the tourists decided to ignore and show no reaction to everything they did, they threw stones. Only then the adults scolded them. It was a horrible experience visiting the temple. Also it is hard to find and there no info board about it. Pity that this is being destroyed by the very own locals themeselves.

I went to Surya Temple. The temple has intricate carvings on the wall and the ceiling. It stands out in grace and architecture. The visual images of coiling serpents around the lotuses are there on the ceiling of the temple. It is great place to go.

Osian (Osiyan) is an ancient town in Jodhpur District of Rajasthan in India. It is also popularly known as "Khajuraho of Rajasthan” It is the other name for this oasis in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan. There are many beautiful temples in this Osian oasis. To give you an idea as to its size it is a panchayat village in Osian Taluka lying at 69 km to Jodhpur, on a diversion at Jodhpur-Bikaner Highway.

This Sun Temples is of 10th century and similar to the Sun Temple at Ranakpur. We find the statue Surya God in the inner complex of the temple. There are sculptures of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Durga Mata within the temple premises. The platform for wedding and other ceremonial rituals is an open Mantap in the temple. When you are inside any temple you must observe the walls and the ceiling, where, customarily you will find the carvings, paintings and images of the gods related to the main deity. Here also in the ceiling there are images of serpents curled around lotus flowers. Beneath this the life-story of Lord Krishna is portrayed. The entrance has images of couples hang on to each other in passionate hugging. Probably because of this grand architecture of the shrine it has become one of the greatly sacrosanct places of worship. The magnificent architecture of this temple speaks volumes regarding the craftsmanship of the past era.

Jodhpur is the second largest city in Rajasthan. It is 335 km away from its capital, Jaipur and 200 km from Ajmer, where holy Dargah is there.

Jodhpur is popularly known as "Sun City" because of the bright, sunny weather it enjoys throughout the year. Peculiarly there is another nick name for this city as the "Blue City”, because houses around the Mehrangarh Fort are consistently painted in blue colour.

You can reach Jodhpur by Air, Train and bus. There are hotels and restaurants to provide tasty food and accommodation of your choice matching to the weight of your valet. There are eating-places where you can order for Indian, Chinese, Continental and Mughlai cuisine. You may taste the famous Kachouri (a snack eaten with chutney). If you love sweet eat laddoos, specially made to melt as soon as you put it into your mouth. You will love to drink buttermilk in tall glass, which is called as 'lassi', of which you may be familiar with.
