About
Walking in the Botanical park & Gardens of Crete offes spiritual tranquility and visual pleasure in addition to knowledge on plants and their material . Nearly 20 hectares of land are waiting to welcome you, full of fruit trees from all over the world, herbs, medicinal and ornamental plants in a park different from others, where the land’s formation and the region’s microclimate make it a paradise for hundreds of plants and animals! In the midst of this colorful and vivid landscape stands a burnt centennial olive tree, a memorial and a reference to the dismal fires of 2003, the park’s history and origin. The newest and one of the most interesting sites of the Prefecture of Chania lies only 18 kilometers outside the city, on the feet of the White Mountains. It is ideal for visitors of all ages, combining enjoyments that only Crete can offer!

- Mary AHeytesbury, United Kingdom20 contributionsDissappointingMy husband and I visited the garden today but were sadly disappointed. It was recommended by our hotel and quite nearby so we were looking forward to it. However it was badly maintained and there were very few healthy plants. There were some mature trees that were thriving but the were also a lot of small specimens which looked neglected and in need of feeding and watering. The cafe is beautifully appointed looking over the gardens and surrounding hills. The staff were very pleasant and polite. Also if you are thinking of visiting the whole site is on the hillside so very steep and rough underfoot.Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 26, 2023
- CH_globalviewThe Hague, The Netherlands229 contributionsA lovely walk through beautiful Cretan gardensA surprising stop. A very well laid out and pleasant walk through a botanic garden on the side of a hill. 2.5km rocky paths take you through different zones with clearly labeled plants. Lots of different trees and herbs. Easy to engage with and the birdsong and calls of peacocks (of which there are many) make it a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere. Quite steep in places and although waking sticks were available it would not be easy to do with people who struggle with walking. Not suitable for wheelchairs or push chairs to do the whole route. The restaurant has a stunning view and menu looked amazing.Visited May 2023Traveled with familyWritten May 1, 2023

If you have any walking issues maybe not for you as the paths are up and down a mountain side. Nice just to go to the restaurant and eat good local food and enjoy the amazing view.Visited May 2023Traveled soloWritten May 30, 2023
- ElizabethGeraldtonGeraldton, Australia276 contributionsAbsolutely brilliant. A must visitI've just been to the most amazing Botanical Gardens and Park by bus inland from Chania. The return bus ride was good. It was incredible. It's very steep and hilly but worth it. It's mainly in the shade. The park is unique as it covers plants, herbs, and fruit trees. The restaurant at the end is a wonderful reward. All the produce is from the park.Visited June 2023Traveled soloWritten June 4, 2023
- Alex M6 contributionsAn absolute delightExcellent labour of love 2.5km botanical gardens trail set into the hillside with a huge variety of plants from across the globe. The restaurant at the top is excellent with superb views. At least a dozen peacocks live amongst the foliage along with many other birds, butterflies and tiny lizards. Friendly staff. Wear proper shoes, take water, and take your time on the trail. Expect the trail to last around 2 hours. We went around 10am in July. Lots of cover is provided by the trees throughout the trail. A delight.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 14, 2023
- Moskvichka12Moscow, Russia566 contributionsBest place in the whole of Crete!I just adore this park and come here every time I'm in Crete, even if I'm in a completely different region. This was the latest in the year that I've visitied, and it was exciting to see so many trees in fruit. It's a 2 and a half km walk, and it is definitely steep. They recommend 2 hours, but that must be for people who have no interest and just walk non-stop. I read the signs, tooks loads of photos, admired the views, fed the deer, found lizaeds... so I needed about 3 hours to get round. The local bus is perfect, because it gives you over 4 hours there - time to see everything and also get a homemade lemonade in the restaurant. :-) The story behind the park is touching, the development every year is striking, and I recommend this park wholeheartedly. The best day of my holiday!!Visited June 2023Traveled soloWritten July 31, 2023
- christarry8514 contributionsLovely walkGood road to the gardens, don't be put off by the hairpin chicanes, the road was wide enough. We didn't eat at the restaurant but it appeared to be very pleasant. Gift shop with lots of choice. It is steep in places so keep that in mind for fitness levels, we were in flip flops though and didn't struggle. There are steps if you have a buggy etc... Also, take water with you. Great variety of plants with information available, pleasant to walk around. Took us about 2 hours at a very leisurely pace. There are peacocks roaming and there were a few deer/donkeys at the bottom. We dropped a star as their enclosures were very small, they may have larger pastures that we didn't see. All in all it's definitely worth the drive, there is also a taverna on the way which we highly recommend. Great food and the best orange juice we've ever had!Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 12, 2023
- Michael BCottingham, United Kingdom14 contributionsLovely place for a hot dayBeautiful gardens with plenty of variety of plants, herbs and fruits. Lizards, birds and butterfly’s all over the place. Plenty of shade so would be good on a hot day. Fairly up and down over the 2.5km track. We wore trainers and were fine but walking shoes would probably be better. Also take some water as we were gasping when we finished. Lovely views from back up top at the cafe.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 15, 2023
- Hannah18 contributionsWedding partyI had my wedding here last Thursday after the wedding planner suggested holding it here. There were only the six of us including myself and my husband. It was amazing! The ceremony was held in a stone stage like area overlooking the gardens and we then had a really intimate dinner under a tree with candles and lanterns and music and it was the most amazing evening of my life. The reviews aren’t kidding about the food, it was the nicest food I’ve had whilst in Crete so the chefs need to pat themselves on the back. And the local sparkling wine was too easy to drink and I’m not even a wine drinker. We went on a walk around the gardens for our photos and it’s simply stunning, the peacocks wandering around and the views of the surrounding hills and valleys and the beautiful plants made it perfect. I wish we had longer there. The restaurant had closed to customers when it was time for the wedding meal and so we had our own waiter Yannis (I hope I’ve spelt your name right) who was just the nicest man you could ever meet and was amazing running up and down the steps with all of our dishes and drinks, we will forever be grateful to him for making the evening as good as it was and we all agreed that he is an asset to the gardens. Huge Thank you to all of the amazing team there!Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 19, 2023
- HansKwadendamme, The Netherlands2,912 contributionsGreat place to beBeware when arriving round 11 ( like us) in the morning parking space is an issue. At 3 pm there was plenty of space. The grounds walking distance is about 2,5 km and takes you between 1.5 and 2.5 hour. The is a restaurant where you can have something to eat.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 19, 2023

It is a beautiful park in the valley. The trail is a one way loop - You first go down to the lake which is at the bottom of the valley and then back to the restaurant at the top. But it is not physically difficult. Most part it is in the shade (we were there in the morning). There is lot of beautiful plants, including many fruit trees. Definitely worth seeing.

We took the local bus at 9:35 to the gardens with the return journey at 14:45 allowing plenty of time to stroll around the 2.5 km park. There is a steep hill down from the where the bus stops but the views are fantastic. Tickets are 7E per adult and 6E seniors. The circular route meanders though a variety of different plants including many fruit trees, tropical, Mediterranean, citrus and cherry trees. The half way point was just after the lake which was a lovely setting for a rest stop watching the peacocks and birds following it round to the small animals such as tortoise, deer, and the donkey. The path was quite steep in places so it's worth wearing proper shoes. The throne area provided great views back over the lake and the mountain. We really enjoyed our day out but beware mosquitoes and other insects are out in force, wear a lot of bug spray as a small amount is not enough, we got bitten badly.

A very interesting garden which all the family enjoyed, including 2 and 4 year olds. It’s natural and well presented plants and trees lined the pathways in a gentle slope down to where the animals were kept in their paddocks. Peacocks are roaming freely throughout the gardens. On the return back up to the restaurant, we all enjoyed the cooling mist area.
The restaurant provided exceptional organic meals, with ingredients mostly produced (where possible) at the gardens. Excellent service at the restaurant, with very attentive staff.

A great way to spend 2-3 hours. More types of fruit than most people will have heard of, beautiful setting in the foothills of the White Mountains and the restaurant is really, really good. Great gift shop selling olive oil, honey, marmalade all produced on site. The garden is a 2.5 km path which takes you through various zones (tropical etc) and incudes a duck pond, tortoises and goats at the halfway point. Quite strenuous so be prepared for toddlers to request a “carry’ on the way back up. They’ve done a great job here after a fire in 2003. Loved it.

Fantastic experience coming in mid June. A lot of the fruit was mature so we could so we could really experience what the fruit plants was producing.
Our kids loved seeing all the flowers and fruit as well as the peacocks that are scattered throughout the trail.
The trail is around 2,5km and there is a lot of terrain. If you come with babies, please be fit for pulling strollers up and down and preferably have big wheels on it.
Set aside 1,5-3 hours for the trail including a small break when you get back to the start where there is a restaurant.

These gardens are situated in a mountain valley about 30 minutes drive from Chania. Plants from all round the world are here, everything very clearly labelled. It’s one walk round of 2.5 km with a short cut. Means you don’t have to worry about missing anything. Lots of peacocks at one spot, saw one really close, also lizards of course. At intervals there are whimsical objects such as a bicycle painted with flowers, and a double bed in an especially idyllic spot! Someone has a sense of humour. Very good value at 6 euros. We visited just as the first leaves were unfolding but the cherry trees were in full bloom and also wisteria.

Visited the garden in late April and we virtually had the park to ourselves.
It was not what I was expecting and it certainly isn't formal like Kew Gardens. The park is on a steep hillside and you walk down meandering pathways to the very bottom where there is a small lake with ducks and some other animals (all very well cared for). You then begin the ascent back up the hill on a different path. Throughout the walk which took us around 2.5 hours there are interesting sculptures and information to look at and read. It really is a very relaxing place to spend some time. The majority of trees and shrubs are labelled and give information.
When we visited the trees were full of oranges, the fruit trees were in blossom and the Wisteria was just stunning.
We plan to make another trip in September to see other trees and plants which were yet to leaf and flower,
There is a restaurant/cafe on site which looked really nice but we didn't take advantage of it but we certainly will next time when we visit.
A word of caution. This walk is steep in places and it's better to have good footwear. Certainly not for people with mobility issues.

A beautiful few hours wandering the mountainside of the Botanical Gardens.
A bargain at 6 euros per person (you should put your prices up 🙂).
Well laid out and always something to catch your eye along with the different aromas at every turn.
Steady footwear is a must!
Finished with a refreshing homemade juice from the gardens.

How long is the short cut route versus the full route? I know you would miss out the animals and lake but would you miss much else by doing the shorter route?
Ulrich S

The long route is about an hour extra. You miss the animals, the small pond, and the orange orchard at the bottom of the valley- and of course lots od otherplants. If you are fit enough andhave the time, take the long way around.
