This is NOT St. Joseph's church
Mar 2020
I will admit right off the bat, that I did not go to Huialoha Church, but based on the photos being posted while I was looking to review St. Joseph's church, this came up a lot.

This is a small church that is east of St. Joseph's that is not on the main road, but visible from the main road. It is beautiful from afar, and our tour driver said that the church is still active with the local community. f TripAdvisor allows the upload, I've added a screenshot of Google Maps to show the difference of location.

Huialoha Church has a very nice website which describes the church and where you can contact them.

Didn't know how many stars to give it, so I figured 4 was fair.

Hidden Huialoha

Definitely worth a stop if you're nearby. Road may be chained, but you can move it during visitor hours (6 AM-6 PM). Great view of the ocean from a secluded sanctuary. We were here for a while and saw three feral pigs, but no other people.

Nov 2019
The trip we planed was perfect in every way! This was an amazing experience. We loved this place and hope to return someday soon! The Church was very interesting, We learned a lot from the priest, he was so gracious, and welcoming. Hopefully he will visit this Church again soon!

Best day ever
Nov 2018 • Couples
I couldn't imagine a more beautiful setting for my husband to ask me to marry him. It was surreal with the church, waves crashing... Green everywhere. I'll never forget it and will definitely revisit!

Church Was Closed and Locked.
Apr 2018
St. Joseph Catholic church in Kaupo celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2012. The population of the area had dwindled over the years until this largish church was no longer viable. Now mass is only celebrated in those months in which there are five Sundays. The church was interesting because of its history. But it was closed and locked so all we could see was the exterior. We had to get its history from the internet.

BEAUTIFUL SETTING
May 2018 • Couples
Saw the church from the road, found the turnoff, but there was a chain across the road, so we respected their desires and did not drive or walk down to the church. Just observed from the road.

So beautiful
Jan 2018 • Family
One of my favorite stops on the back road to Hana. So peaceful and picturesque. Chain blocks the drive to keep lots of people from going in but you can open it (just be sure to close after you go through). We got stuck trying to get out so I would park and walk down about half way.

Peaceful Visit
Nov 2017
It was a tranquil and peaceful visit to this remote church. The location is beautiful right on the ocean. There’s a small cemetery. We walked down to the rocky beach and saw a couple fishermen coming out of the water with spearguns and at least a dozen fish that must have been at least 2 feet long.

Wonderful Church
Sep 2017 • Couples
Saw the Church on the road to Hana. Pulled over and visited.

Church was locked and noted that some repairs were being accomplished. Graveyard was open to see also. Some newer graves were near road entrance. Interesting and different, worth your time to visit

One of my favorite places on Earth
Jul 2017 • Friends
This church and its location are exquisite. I went 20 years ago for the first time and just visited again last week with some childhood friends. It's even better than I remembered. Both times I arrived as the sun was setting (around 5:30), and it was a spiritual experience. The drive there from Makawao is one of the most breathtaking you will ever experience. Personally, I prefer this route to the more popular "road to Hana." I decided that this is where I want my cremated remains scattered when the time comes. It's that beautiful.
