Gardens revisited
Jun 2021 • Solo
Amazing visit today, credit to the gardening team, the gardens are amazing beautiful flowers, the smell of the peonies were stunning and the roses. Thankyou for making my day. Also the friendly smily ladies on the entrance. Can't wait to come back. Your gardens are my happy place. I have a yearly pass and I will definitely be renewing it.

Shouldn’t be open yet
Jun 2021
Bought three annual passes for the gardens and visited today. Now admittedly the plants are behind due to our cold spring. I’m a gardener, I get that. But the plants are still choked with weeds, the whole of one quarter is effectively under construction because all the wood chip bedding is being replaced, there are plants which haven’t made it through but are still in place although they’re dead. This garden is nowhere near ready to open. As for the cafe, the bad reviews are spot on. I had a scone which was dry enough to be at least two days old. There was no menu on display and the food on offer looked like the last ten minutes of a school dinner hour. What appeared to be couscous and salad turned out to be side dishes for the two flavours of pie on offer...there was also a desiccated serving tin of what looked like pasta and tuna, next to garlic bread which looked uncooked. When I asked the staff member what was available, she waved her hand at this motley selection and said ‘that’. The food was poor, the service worse and the gardens a real mess. If you insist on going, I’d leave it a few weeks for them to remember what decent food and service look like.

Coffee & Cake
Oct 2020 • Couples
Visited with my partner for coffee & cake. Feel the prices are slightly high and the staff look miserable and aren’t very good with customer service. Asked a young lady if it was possible to get a table cleaned and she was like ‘yeah’ looked around and sighed!

The gardens are lovely to visit on a nice summer day - all the bad reviews are for the cafe not the actual gardens!
Jun 2020
We visited the gardens in June 2019 to see the roses and were hoping to return this year but sadly covid19 spoilt that, so will have to try again next year in 2021!

The gardens were lovely to wander around for a couple of hours in the sunshine with family. There is a £6 entrance fee per adult, but we enjoyed our birthday outing treat. The walled garden is quite small but we managed to spend a couple of hours here with family, having a leisurely stroll. There are many varieties of flowers to see and also fruit trees and vegetables. The roses are a highlight! There are also small fountains and water features, with lots of seating throughout so that you can sit and enjoy the peace and tranquillity.

Parking is free but there is a £6p/p cost to enter the gardens.

Cafe - don’t waste your money
Oct 2020 • Family
Overpriced, pre-packaged food.
£25 for two meals, one Americano & one cup of tea.
Mince & dumpling special consisted of a cold pre-made Yorkshire pudding topped with watery gravy and mixed veg. 70% of the meal consisted of frozen mixed veg and there was about one mouthful of mince meat.

Gardens are beautiful though.

Spend your money else where

Firstly I was asked to pay for a gardens pass when all I wanted to do was visit the cafe and farm shop but due to the one way system I was forced to by a very miserable young girl, who did not want to be there.

Packed sandwiches and bought in cake. Terrible. Scones dry as anything. Staff very miserable and did not want to chat was very abrupt with me when I asked where all the staff had gone, as when I last visited (last Aug 2019) there was loads of friendly staff. They replied and said that all of there staff had received there P45’s and probably won’t be returning. - poor staff as the ones that were in on this day where so miserable probably because all they were understaffed.
I even seen a member of staff in the back eating some left over cake and quiche. Isn’t there a staff room for that? Talking about the quiches they looked dry and there was loads of fly’s. To top it off the staff are not wearing ppe. And have terrible attitudes. They also aren’t doing the eat out to help out program, so avoid here like the plague go to somewhere else and help a local business not these cheap skates!!!

Disappointed
Jul 2020 • Friends
I must agree with every word written by David M from Durham. Without repeating his words I will say that I consider a lack of good management to be the problem. A £6.00 entry fee per person to a cafe is unbelievable!!!!! I did not want a years pass. I did not want to visit the gardens and there is no doubt in my mind that management could have organised the exit from the cafe using social distancing arrows as many other places are. I was full of expectation as the entrance is lovely but sadly the scones I ordered from the cafe were very disappointing. The staff would benefit from some retraining also. Not worthy of a repeat visit.

Asked to pay garden admission just to use cafe
Aug 2020 • Family
We were going to go on the woodland walk but after a sudden downpour of rain we changed our minds and went to visit the cafe and shop instead. Quickly changed our minds again as we were told at the door that we would have to pay the garden admission just to go into the shop and use the cafe due to the one way system. Ridiculous, especially as the garden admission prices aren’t exactly cheap (£6 an adult and £4 concessions and children of all ages) It was also RAINING so we didn’t exactly want to go in the garden anyway. Really poor.

Taken hostage
Jul 2020
My son and partner and baby are staying with us at the moment and visited the cafe last week. They ordered two cups of coffee, served from an automatic press button machine and in a takeaway cardboard cup. Also a piece of cake to share served in a cardboard box.
They were then told that in order to exit the cafe they had to purchase tickets to the gardens and therefore had to pay over £21 for the coffee and cake!
I spoke with the supervisor in the cafe/shop and expressed my disgust at the fact that a compulsory purchase of the garden entrance was akin to piracy or being held hostage.
She informed me that they could visit the gardens whenever they want and that the extra Gardens charge is displayed.
The pretence that the extra compulsory charge is necessary for social distancing is hogwash and they know it. It is a cynical attempt to wring every last penny out of each visitor
My son and his family live in Taipei so will hardly be making anymore midweek trips for coffee and cake.
I live close to the Gardens and can assure you that it is a beautiful setting.
However, the Cafe does not match the surroundings.
It is run simply for maximum profit, staffed by disinterested casual workers on zero hours contracts and managed by people who have no real interest in your customer experience.
The quality of the food at best is average and is outshone by the local pub and golf club.
Unfortunately I know the management will disregard any customers views because they are only focused on one thing.
This could be the premier destination in the region but it requires much better customer focused management!
No wonder that Wynyard Hall is up for sale!

An amazing place to visit with so much to see and do and great value for money. Make sure you explore the Woodland Walk and all the grounds in full.
