This beautiful park of mountains, streams, and valleys is an ideal place to come if you want to unwind or get some exercise. Sitting north of Grenoble, the Chartreuse Massif is a well-preserved natural area with plenty of hiking trails to explore. I especially liked hiking there in springtime, when the creeks were filled with fresh, flowing water and the mountain fields smelled like new plants. The quiet helps you relax, but you can choose trails based on their level of difficulty in case you want to push yourself. Whatever your reason for visiting this nature preserve, you’ll probably be glad you went.

Having recently spent three months staying in the Chartreuse, I can honestly say that this is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. Completely unspoilt and very quiet-during winter anyway. Had a short visit last summer too and although more tourists, it still didn't feel busy. The mountain scenery is breathtaking! Be sure to visit the monastery-you can't go in but the walks around it are great as are the ones to les cascades at the Cirque de St Meme. In fact, the region has fantastic hikes all over, ranging from easy to very difficult so something for everyone. Brilliant for climbing too and if you are a keen cyclist, the hills are sure to challenge you!
English not widely spoken so make sure you brush up on your French before you visit and take a phrase book.
Gorgeous place set between Chambery and Grenoble. Easily accessible with Lyon, Geneva airports within two hours by car. Train services to Chambery frequent.

Amazing gorges, wide unpopulated valleys, forests and walks way off the beaten track. Check out the Chartreuse museum and even better the monastery high in the hills - a very special "zone de silence".
