About
Ficus Trails protects an important part of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Corridor known as "Puente de Vida," (Bridge of Life), an exuberant key piece of forest located in the heart of the Monteverde community founded in April 19th, 1951 by Quakers from Fairhope, Alabama. The moisture deposited high on the Pacific slope near the Continental Divide in the form of mist and the topography of the area influence Ficus Trails in such a way that a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna can be found in this cloud forest. Climb our hollow trees and enjoy their amazing natural history. Ficus Trails offers each adventurous visitor an overwhelming wilderness experience with no age limit. Ficus Trails is home to over 400 species of birds, dozens of reptiles & amphibians and over 130 mammal species, not to mention the large diversity of trees, plants and fungi. An observation deck allows the visitor to enjoy the majesty of the cloud forest from a total different angle like nowhere else. Watch the Continental Divide covered with clouds and the impressive San Luis waterfall that will become the large Guacimal River as you follow its path down to a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. Take this journey with our professional naturalist guides and you'll come face to face with one of the greatest forces you've ever encountered, Nature. Discover fascinating facts about the cloud forest and surprising insights about its wildlife on day and at night time. Live great moments and photograph unique sights. Two worlds apart separated by light that will trigger all your senses.

Our guide Olman is fantastic. we had a nice small group and saw so many things and learned a lot about the animals, birds and bugs. Transportation was provided as well as flash lights. I recommend this tour for anyone it gives you a totally different perspective

We had a wonderful experience on the night tour in the cloud forest with Olman. He has great night vision; it was amazing what he could see in the darkness! He was extremely knowledgeable about everything we saw, whether it was animals, birds, vegetation or insects. He made sure that each of us had a chance to see everything he found, and he cheerfully took photos for us when it was awkward for us to get close to the subject. We had already been on several day tours, but we saw things on this tour that we hadn’t seen before. We highly recommend that you spend a couple of hours with Olman on this amazing tour.

We visited Monteverde, saw 4 bird species (I have over 600 on my life list, just as a reference). Entrance to the park was expensive, mainly just hiking in dark sweaty jungle. Disillusioned, I hired Fracier, from FICUS Trails. Billed as a 2 hr birding tour on their property, it ended up being 3.5 hours AND included breakfast at Stella's Bakery. Saw over 25 species (Quetzal several times). Fracier knew his stuff. He even drove me back to my hotel (while others were waiting for breakfast) so I could drop off the car key to my wife, then we zipped back and ate breakfast. He is a classy guy, and I'd hire him again on a second visit. Loved that they even had kid pricing. He got after it and went the extra mile. Hire this guy. He lived up to his online credentials. His tour added 20+ birds to our 141 trip list!

Dear Tom S: We are sorry to hear that you went to one of the other places in Monteverde and didn't see much. Sadly, few of the visited places are considered a cloud forest and not all are located in the Monteverde area but too many of our visitors don't know that ahead of time. We are so glad to know you came to Ficus Trails, located in the heart of the Monteverde community, and spotted over 20 birds with one of our guides. We have been blessed with this amazing cloud forest and we love to know that all our visitors are pleased and willing to come back to find more hidden treasures in our forest. Quetzals are magnificent but fragile birds and right now they are all over Ficus Trails because of the avocado trees. We just planted 500 native trees at Ficus Trails in an effort to protect the habitat of all our 480 bird species, specially the quetzal. So, do come back and keep adding birds to your list any time. Thank you so much for joining our Bird Watching Tour and for your nice comment. Sincerely yours, Tha Ficus Trails Team

We went bird watching with Frasier, almost the first trip we did on our holiday. An early start before breakfast was worthwhile to catch the maximum variety of birds. Frasier was an excellent guide with impressive communication skills. We saw Resplendant Quetzals even though it was not quite the right season, plus a large number of other species. We were a small group of five and finished the trip with great breakfast at Stella's (included in cost of trip).

Dear JPBamford: Thank you so much for your kind remarks about our Bird Watching Tour. We are very glad to know you saw many bird species including the Resplendent Quetzal. One of our goals is to help such endangered birds as the quetzal, recover its status. Hopefully we will protect our forests and plant enough trees for those beautiful birds to recover their numbers. We do hope you will be able to come and visit again as many times as you want and enjoy seeing more species of birds Sincerely yours, The Ficus Trails Team

We went on the 5:30 am bird watching hike with Fracier. Thus far it has been the highlight of our trip to Costa Rica. We were able to see a quetzal and a bell bird, although even if we hadn't I would still recommend the experience just as highly. Fracier was an excellent guide with a clear passion for birds and had a wealth of knowledge about the wildlife and area. If we ever return we will definitely do this again!

We recently visited Santa Elena and Monteverde. While there, we did a night tour with Jorge at the Ficus Trail. It was rainy, windy, and cold that night, so the animals weren't very active. However, Jorge did his best to make sure that our young kids had a fun time. We spotted several insects, flourescent fungi, a salamander, spiders, and an opossum. He showed us the Strangler Fig tree and several other unique plants that have medicinal properties. He was very patient and engaging with our kids. When our kids were wet, cold, and hungry, he personally drove us back into town so that we didn't have to wait until the other tour ended. Jorge was super friendly and very knowledgeable about the animals and cloud forest. Plus, he spoke perfect English. I would highly recommend the Ficus Trail Night Tour to anyone visiting Monteverde.

We did a night tour at the Fixus Trails, and it turned out to be our best hike during our 3-day stay since the cloud forest hike was a little bit disappointing.
I think we met up around 6 PM and were given rechargeable flashlights. The flashlights were quite ok, but in retrospect I would have brought my own.
The guide and the people working there were very nice and helpful.
We walked a wide circle in the forest around the premises (see gps-tracking here: http://rblr.co/DRCy).
During the hike we were shown a number of animals and plants/trees: owl, spiders, frogs, longhaired mexican porcupine, tarantula, huge ficus trees etc, The highlight was when the guide at the end of the hike lured out a HUGE tarantula from a small cave with a straw (see photo).
The walk was quite easy, and the path was relatively wide. So there was no need to touch the bushes and trees. Due to heavy rain the path was slightly slippery in certain areas though. The length of the trip was about 2 km lasting around 2 hours.

Had heard good things about Ficus and as it was close to our hotel [Fonda Vela] and a rare dry night in July we booked it very last minute! They accommodated us happily and our family shared the tour with only one other fun Californian couple. Our guide, 'Frazer' was fabulous. He was friendly, spoke great English and really knew his stuff. He gave us flashlights and off we went on their large grounds. We saw bats and frogs, a green venomous sideswiping viper [!] 2 armadillos, amazing strangler ficus trees, among other stuff. The tour, which lasted 2.5 hours was easy to maneuver and fun and creepy to be out at night. It was very informative and my husband and boys were thrilled with the whole thing! Especially our guide Frazer. Only negative would be that we wish there was more of a discount for kids.

Dear johnsongypsies: Night Guided Walks in the cloud forest are among our favorite tours. There's so much to be seen and of course not always spotted. The whole idea of so many mammals and reptiles, insects and amphibians out there is great enough to dare to go and give it a try. We feel it was wonderful to have you here and be able to share such night with you. If you ever consider joining us again with your nice family, please let us know of your ideal kids' rate. We are always open to suggestions and are constantly seeking to improve our service. Kids are already part of the future and we love to have them visit and learning. Have a great month of July. Sincerely yours, The Ficus Trails Team

Dear PaulaAnn 363: Thank you so much for your review. Indeed, there are many hundreds of creatures all around the cloud forest at night. We ourselves have not been able to see them all. Our professional bilingual naturalist guides have seen many different creatures in over 20 years, yet collectively, they have not seen all there is to be seen. We hope to see you around here again so you may enjoy another adventure in the cloud forest. Sincerely yours, The Ficus Tralis Team
