- Tikitiki212Wisconsin141 contributionsDefinitely choose this cloud forest!I debated on which cloud forest(s) to visit in Monteverde, and I am SO glad we chose Santa Elena! I'd heard that it was maybe a bit more challenging than the others, but it really wasn't bad at all. Definitely some inclines and your legs get a workout, but so very worth it. It had the most unique look of the cloud forests we visited. Also, the crowds were very low in comparison. I really felt like I was alone in the jungle! Just amazing. The trees are so beautiful and it is just LUSH green everywhere. Definitely visit Santa Elena! We were so happy we went here.Visited March 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 30, 2023
- Vacationer6116617 contributionsLush, beautiful, and not crowdedOur family did a guided tour with tour from the reserve first thing in the morning. It was very informative and so beautiful. Monteverde reserve was fully booked, but Santa Elena was wonderful because it wasn't crowded at all, and I'm sure the nature information and plant life is the same. Paths are easy to walk, and after the tour ended, we continued to wander by ourselves. Beautiful lookout, too, if you get clear weather!Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 27, 2024
- KaareMeierAarhus, Denmark60 contributionsExtremely beautiful, not crowded, excellent guide!Elena turned out to be a much less crowded version of nearby Monteverde. Lovely, varied, undisturbed. Our guide, Ariel, was probably the best guide we met in all of Costa Rica. An absolutely wonderful experience (note: The road there is rough!)Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 20, 2024
- TriflyerIndia443 contributionsGreat hiking trailsDid a self guided tour, as I had joined a guided tour in Monteverde cloud forest the previous day. I took the 6:30 am shuttle and was amongst the first visitors to start hiking the trails for the day. First stop was the observation tower however Arenal Volcano was visible only at the tip. It was still an all-round good view. I walked all the trails one by one at slow pace. The last one was the longest one the Red trail and I could finish it in 2 hours at leisurely pace. I think it doesn't require 3.5 hours as indicated. I was almost skipping it assuming it would be cutting it too fine for the 4 pm close. All the trails are amazing and doable by anyone with reasonable fitness and with good shoes. I was wondering whether it would be worthwhile going to Santa Elena having visited Monteverde the previous day, and it was absolutely worth it, and enhanced the cloud forest experience and feel good.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 25, 2024
- John Luca9 contributionsPrivate Tour at Santa Elena w/ WalterWe had a great guided tour with Walter who was very knowledgeable of all the various plants, insects, birds and wildlife in the area. He brought a telescope with us on the tour and has an eagle eye for spotting wildlife. He showed us tarantulas and bird’s nests and even camouflaged stick bugs. If you love birds, this is the place for you - especially if you want to see a quetzal! Also, great to know that all the money goes to support the local high school.Visited May 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 3, 2024
- t_jett1Kent, Washington6 contributionsGreat Place to Experience the Cloud ForestThe Sounds of the Forest Tour was exceptional, much better than the other night time tour I did in Monteverde. Starting in late afternoon and continuing until early evening, you get to see the cloud forest both during daylight and at night, with a stop at their observation platform for 360-degree panoramic views. On top of all of that, our guide was friendly and informative. Truly, a great experience!Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten May 8, 2024
- Dick PAmite, Louisiana501 contributionsBeautiful tropical park with nice trails. This is the newest preserve in the Monteverde area and is less crowded than the other two. It has several interesting hiking trails. They are all well marked and easy to follow. The forest is beautiful. At some points you can see the Arenal volcano in the distance. The cafe at the park is ok but not great. The road from Santa Elena to the park is very rough.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 14, 2024

We hired a private guide for our group of 4 and loved it our 2.5 hours inside the park. We drove up from Monteverde and while the road had numerous potholes, we didn't find it a difficult trip. Parking was easy and while there were a considerable number of people arriving at the same time (8:30a), once inside it spread out and never felt crowded. Our guide Walter was perfect! He was super knowledgable and conversational and never felt like he was just giving a prepared or canned script. He was able to help us find a number of animals we would never have found on our own and took pictures through his telescope. We saw a wide range of birds, tarantulas, and learned a great deal about the cloud forest and the history of the area. This is a great choice for a non-touristy visit into the cloud forest and I do think the price of the guide is worth it.

Support this nonprofit and see amazing birds in a very quiet and beautiful part of the cloud forest. Johnny was our guide for an early morning private birding hike. He was extremely knowledgeable and kind. He was very sweet to our at times noisy toddler along for the ride, and patient, looking for all the birds we were hoping to find. He is a great guide, my husband had such a good time he went back later in the week for another three hour hike and despite it pouring rain Johnny with a leaky poncho and both of them falling in the mud was absolutely wonderful as a guide.

This was a highlight on our trip to Monteverde. We were treated to an amazing, fact-filled tour with our guide, Walter. His knowledge was vast from orchids to spiders and everything in between. He made the tour particularly enjoyable for our school aged children by creating fun challenges to find points of interest or answer specific questions. Walter expanded our understanding of the cloud forest and highlighted hidden treasures throughout the adventure that we would have otherwise missed on our own. The tour was capped off inside, enjoying the most delicious hot chocolate and being treated to the amazing footage of animals who call the reserve home and are captured on the cameras throughout the property. It was a wonderful experience for all!

We really loved the trails here. We did the Encantado trail which was narrow and so, so green. It had been raining for quite a while (3 days), so it was pretty muddy in places and there were a few downed trees we had to scramble over. The youth challenge and observation tower are lovely too. We didn't see any wildlife, but I'm sure with a guide that you would. There is a small restaurant for snacks and they offer a shuttle service to town which we took advantage of. It even dropped us off at our hotel.

The Santa Elena Nature Reserve is a local charity run primarily for school children. Tourists paying to visit the reserve assist in paying for the running of the location. It is about 5k away from the famous Monteverde sky walk.
The leader of the reserve took me on a personal tour. The area has some fabulous flora and fauna. We saw tarantulas, lizards and many more animals.
A truly fabulous place which supports the local community

The Santa Elena reserve provides an unforgettable opportunity to experience the could forest without crowds of tourists around you. Our very knowledgeable guide pointed out numerous hidden gems of plant and animal life. We would highly recommend visiting the reserve to anyone interested in the nature of the tropics - not to be missed!

This trail was one of my favorite hikes during our visit to Costa Rica. I liked it so much better than the Monteverde Cloud Forest because it wasn't as crowded, it was affordable, and we virtually had the entire place to ourselves. Because it is a cloud forest, the chances are that it's going to be wet. And when we hiked, it rained the entire time for five hours. But it was so amazing and worth it.
Be sure to wear waterproof hiking shoes, a waterproof rain jacket or poncho because you will likely get soaked. Even though we didn't see a lot of animals and the view was covered by fog, we loved every minute of the hike and it felt great to breathe in that clean, moist, air.

After lunch we had to make a choice, either the Monteverde Cloud Forest or Santa Elena Cloud Forest. We stopped at the local tourism center and they explained that Montverde was going to be like an amusement park with how nice it was out. There would be a long line to get in and once in the walk would be a line of people on the trails. We decided to go to Reserva Santa Elena instead which was supposed to be a lot quieter because it is not known as well known. We got to the parking lot and there was only 3 other cars in the lot. They told us we couldn't do the full loop because of arriving so late in the day but we were able to do smaller loop, the yellow trail. This ended up being the most majestic hike that we did while in Costa Rica. We didn't see a lot of animals but it brought us deep into the forest that we so lots of flowers, plants, and all kinds of moss growing throughout the reserve, it felt magical then my older daughter and I decided to do the trail that crossed over the top of the ridge were the fire tower is. The clouds were thick and rolling over the ridge as we hiked along the continental divide. This hike made me truly understand the beauty of Costa Rica.

This walk was one of my favorites in the Monteverde area, providing a very intimate experience with the cloud forest in a less crowded location, and also a tremendous view from the observation tower. We hiked about two hours beginning at 8:30 and saw very few people. The weather in the town was sunny, but it was wonderfully clouded in the cloud forest. We were glad we brought rain gear. As an amateur photographer this was one of my favorite stops in the Monteverde area. Because we did other guided hikes in this area, we chose to hike the Santa Elena Cloud Forest on our own, and if your interest is in the general scenery, this works great. If you are looking for animals, or want to learn about the flora, fauna, and history then a guide is a huge help.

I went on a solo guided tour of the reserve with Johnny as my guide. Being in this magical forest felt like a fairy tale. Johnny was an excellent source of all information about the trees, climate, birds, animals, bugs, plants, and more. He was incredibly friendly and I never felt intimidated to ask questions. We spent about 2.5 hours in the misty jungle and in the end chased down the respondent quetzal- what a beautiful sight! I'm so happy I went for the guided tour and thank you Johnny for taking a chance on the rain to go with me. I highly recommend this park and tour to future guests.

To do a self guided tour in April do we need to purchase tickets in advance and if so is there a website where we can do that? The only website I found seemed to be inoperable. Thanks

Quisiera saber si costo de la entrada para visitantes extranjeros. Si los menores pagan boleto. Si la atracciĂłn de los puentes y tirolesas es independiente al pago de la entrada

Hello. Can anyone confirm if trails wheelchair friendly. The pictures show the path as quite well maintained but is it gravel?
Written March 22, 2019
Hi,
We do have a trail in concret that can be access on wheel chair, notice that this trail is about 500 mts. Circular, Mundo Joven Trail.
You can access part of the Cloud Forest, The Orchid Garden, and the main building.
The rest of the Trails are in gravel, not that nice for wheel chair. If want more info, write us to or email.

Saludos
Walter -

Thinking about making Santa Elena Cloud Forest reserve one of our stops. We're already planning to take a guided tour at Selvatura Park, are they similar enough hikes that we should skip the Santa Elena Reserve and just do one?
Written October 2, 2017
The two parks are very close to each other. Selvatura has the bridges walk which is well maintained and can be done without a guide. The Santa Elena is more primitive - which for me is a good thing. It was much more 'cloud forest' than Selvatura seemed from what I saw. If I had it to do again, I'd hire a guide for St. Elena and just do Selvatura myself.
