The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels...

The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels of insects and arachnids for over 20 years. Our mission has always been to change the way people view these small but fantastically diverse animals. It is not hard either- with 4 different butterfly habitats housing up to 30 species of butterfly, a leaf cutter ant colony and over 20 species of live Costa Rican insects and arachnids in our nature centre we have something that will melt the heart of even the most devout bug crusher! A dedicated and passionate group of staff and volunteers will guide you on a tour through our three acre facility where you will see just some of the amazing insects and arachnids Costa Rica has to offer! The property is lush and full of other Costa Rican favourites such as capuchin monkeys and agoutis! Birders will not be disappointed with wrens galore and common visits from Keel Billed toucan, blue crowned motmot and the occasional appearance of the famed bell bird. We are open 365 days a year, so drop by whenever you can!

This is an excellent place to visit - the guide was so informative and friendly, and we got to see a wide range of insects up close, as well as butterflies. Really enjoyable.

Hadrian was a wonderful, informative and personable guide. We got to touch and learn about many creatures we would have otherwise run away from. Well worth the visit.

Freddy our naturalist guide was wonderful. Totally fearless regarding her insect charges, and extremely knowledgeable about their behaviour and habitats. Then we went to see the butterflies in several habitats segmented by whee they would be found by elevation. Amazing! Finally a visit to the leaf cutters and their habitat. A very worthwhile and educational tour. Do not miss it.

The butterfly garden has butterflies and other really cool insects and with the tour you learn so much about their importance and diversity in nature. To see it all you need about 1.5 hours and it is well worth the trip. Really interesting information about the important insects in the cloud forest and the guides there are amazing!

We were hesitant to include the butterfly garden as our teenage children tried to veto this, but after we were inside they loved it. Our guide was excellent and was able to entertain the children with fascinating facts. We were glad we did this.

Spent 2 very informative hours here - it starts with a guided tour lasting about an hour which was really interesting and informative. The guide seemed to really love his job and was very caring with the butterflies and other insects we saw. I even got to release a newly hatched blue morpho into the wild!

Delighted to have made the effort to visit here. A very well spent few hours. We learned so much from our English guide and saw far more than just butterflies. The staff here clearly love their work and need support to keep this place going. We rarely spend two hours anywhere so this was a major plus. Loved seeing all... More

This was one of the highlights of our Monteverde visit. It's a short walk from Santa Elena and a little hidden, but totally worth the trip (or a $3 cab ride). There's more than butterflies too, with tarantulas, beetles and stick insects to name a few. We got over our phobia of giant cockroaches by meeting "Timmy" (he's really cute!).... More
