Description:

The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels...

The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels of insects and arachnids for over 20 years. Our mission has always been to change the way people view these small but fantastically diverse animals. It is not hard either- with 4 different butterfly habitats housing up to 30 species of butterfly, a leaf cutter ant colony and over 20 species of live Costa Rican insects and arachnids in our nature centre we have something that will melt the heart of even the most devout bug crusher! A dedicated and passionate group of staff and volunteers will guide you on a tour through our three acre facility where you will see just some of the amazing insects and arachnids Costa Rica has to offer! The property is lush and full of other Costa Rican favourites such as capuchin monkeys and agoutis! Birders will not be disappointed with wrens galore and common visits from Keel Billed toucan, blue crowned motmot and the occasional appearance of the famed bell bird. We are open 365 days a year, so drop by whenever you can!

Very enjoyable visit, our guide Mat seemed passionate and was very knowledgeable. The tour starts with the insects and spiders' room. There you can observe many species from the region and the guide even let us hold and touch the insects, which was awesome. We even released 2 butterflies fresh out of their chrysalis. Then you get to visit 4... More

This is a fabulous butterfly garden with an unbelievably talented staff of volunteers with a wide knowledge of the local insect population. Not only can you see butterflies here, you can see walking sticks, Hercules beetle, tarantulas, scorpions and more.

This place is wonderful. The guy takes you for a tour and shows you some really cool bugs before getting to the butterflies. Bugs like a tarantula, rhino beetles and Goliath beetles and more. There were a few newly hatched butterflies and we let them free in the butterfly house, so cool. There are several houses, each with different types... More

a real opportunity to see a vast array of butterflies and to learn about them, we had a great tour guide who was very informative and we took away a lot of knowledge about butterflies and their lifecycle. Got some fantastic pictures and well worth a vist.

I definitely recommend the Butterfly Gardens to other visitors. This was one of our favorites from our entire trip in Costa Rica. Not only do you get to see some great and unique bugs but you also get to hold them. The butterfly gardens setup is also very unique with a great variety of different gardens with different species in... More

We visited the butterfly house with our two young girls. The guide (and his name escapes me) was very friendly, passionate and knowledgeable about the creatures and the area. We all loved the bugs and he even let my girls help to release two newly hatched Blue Morphos which pleased them to no end. The walk was educational and enjoyable... More

My daughter loves butterflies and my son loves bugs so I was happy to there was something for each of them here. We started the tour with an American speaking guide and he was very enthusiastic and my son loved learning about and seeing the unique bugs they had. He was a bit sad that he couldn't hold the stick... More

This place is great! Not only are there thousands of butterflies to wonder at, but the guides are so knowledgable and have a real passion for butterflies (and other things that creep, crawl, flutter or buzz!). We walked there from Santa Elena which took about 30 mins. If you're staying in the Monteverde area you should definitely go!

We LOVE butterflies, so we had to check this place out. Plus we got to hold a LIVE elephant beetle which was AWESOME!! We were in a small group of just the two of us, so I am sure that helped with getting to do that. We learned a lot and enjoyed the garden. The coolest part was talking with... More

Charming lovely place run by knowledgable, entertaining sweet people. There is more than butterflies here, although they were fantastic. Tarantulas, beetles, and the adorable paper wing cock roaches. Yes, I know, a lot of people don't like them, but our guides enthusiasm, knowledge, love and respect for them made me feel guilty about my silly dislike of them, so now... More
