This added a great variety to our Costa Rica Nature and Hiking vacation. We enjoyed learning about the processing of sugar cane, coffee and chocolate. Our guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. It's a little expensive, but if you're not on a budget, I highly recommend it for something educational.

What a fantastic tour! Our guide was so skilled and sharing information but keeping it light enough to not feel overwhelming or dense; he kept things moving at the perfect pace, with lots to see and do along the way. Our family of 4 learned so much about coffee, sugar, and chocolate. The tour was very family friendly and the guide was great with kids, but plenty of interest for adults too. I loved learning that the property has been a family farm for 4 generations, and only added tours 15 years ago. The sugarcane demonstration was given by the father of the family. These folks know what they're talking about! Only thing I would have liked better would be to spend a little more time in the sugarcane mill area; there was so much to see there but it went by so fast. I liked this tour so much I would even do it again. Highly recommend!

This coffee/chocolate/sugar cane tour in Monteverde is great! If you're looking for a small group size (6 total in our group) and a family-owned farm, El Trapiche is definitely the winner. Our tour guide Jairo was super knowledgeable and really friendly and excited to answer all of our questions. The owner of the farm demonstrated how they make sugar from the sugarcane and the mother prepared some delicious samples for us at the end. The samples included coffee, chocolate, cacao nibs, sugar cane, lemonade made with sugar from their farm, and a homemade snack which was a tortilla filled with a root vegetable/squash mixture. The tour was really personal and we really felt like part of the family. Definitely a highlight of our Monteverde trip—highly recommend!

We loved this tour. Great hospitality and beautiful setting. All the staff really made us feel special at El Trapiche. Our guide spoke great English, was very knowledgeable, friendly and had a real passion for the area. The staff provided impressive displays and examples of the sugar cane & coffee growing, harvesting and final product process. We especially enjoyed their live demonstration of using oxen, and the beautiful oxen cart. This tour also includes explanations about the history of sugar cane and coffee in Costa Rica. Nice generous product samples given at the end. Small interesting reasonably priced gift shop. Highly recommended!

Amazing coffee/sugarcane/cacao tour and an experience not to miss. Can’t really compare it to Don Juan or the Cafe Monteverde tours since I didn’t do those ones but I specifically picked this one because the scenery looked nicer and it was a family farm. The tour guide was knowledgeable and the tour was engaging from beginning to end. It was fun to try the coffee bean in different stages of its processing. Also got to try coffee at the end as well as some sides. Altogether an excellent tour. Just book it with the transportation ($5 roundtrip per person from your hotel) to make it easy for you.

This tour was included in our planned tour so we didn’t really know what to expect as we hadn’t researched it particularly.
I was surprised that it was such a small operation but our guide was so knowledgeable explaining about the emphasis being in good quality that I soon understood.
We really enjoyed the tastings of different stages of production of both coffee and chocolate and it gave us a great insight.
Unfortunately whilst we were there it started to rain, we had come prepared for Costa Rican weather but unfortunately others in the same tour hadn’t so they kept complaining and I think we may have missed out on part of the outside tour as we spent most of our time in buildings.
I don’t like coffee but tried the sample at the end and it was so good I think I’m now a convert!
I would certainly recommend this tour but please take a raincoat and don’t complain!

We were lucky enough to be on the tour when there were only three other groups coming through. I could see how this could be crowded and hard to hear the information if another group was nearby. Our guide seemed very knowledgeable, spoke very good English, and was willing to answer any questions from our group. She explained about the coffee, sugarcane, and chocolate processes. We did get to try a very small sample of chocolate on the tour. Our son volunteered to stir liquid cane sugar until it solidified which he got to take with him. At the end of the tour you are given a snack which can include a tasting of coffee. You can ride a short distance in the oxcart down the trail from the chocolate station to the sugarcane station. It's a cute touch.

Our family of 3 loved the tour. Our tour guide was Diego, one of the Owner's sons. He was so pleasant and knowledgeable. The farm is a family owned and run enterprise and I think we met at least 4 family members working in various parts of the farm during the tour. My 10 year old son was even captivated and befriended Diego for questions and conversation along the walking parts of the tour. Not a normal occurrence for him and we have been on many tours all over the world. You get to make your own molasses candy from the processed sugar cane, try dark and white chocolate and of course try the coffee which was excellent. There are also some snacks at the end which were delicious! This tour is well run and well worth the time and on top of that - very reasonably priced for the experience you receive. Gracias, Diego for your wonderful tour and for all the hard work from your family!

This was a 2 hour tour with a group of 8-10 people through a local working farm. Our tour guide Kaitlyn was great. Explaining the plants, facility/equipment and the process from beginning to end. At each stop we were able to ask questions, explore the plants and taste the products. A beautiful scenic backdrop was viewed along the way. We ended the tour with a homemade snack and cup of coffee or lemonade. Fantastic educational and enjoyable tour!

This is the fourth time in five years that we have attended the El Trapiche tour and it was very good. Anthony was our guide and he was not only very knowledgeable about the processes of making coffee, chocolate and sugar, but he was knowledgeable of the flora and fauna of the region.
The tour is intimate and hands-on. The end of the tour is very special as you are treated to a homemade snack made with the Arrecache root, potatoes and beef (or vegetarian, if you prefer). I strongly recommend this tour if you are interested. They have English and Spanish speaking guides and the tour is about 1 kilometer long with some elevation change. We spent almost three hours there but the tour itself was about two hours long.

We are a family of 6 adults and 3 children coming form the Doubletree Hotel by Hilton located in Puntarenas. We have 2 rental cars and would need driving directions and an estimate of time to get there. The tour sounds fantastic. We could come 3 pm March 10 or 11. Next week. Which way should we come? What day would be less crowded? Thank you so much and PURA VIDA. Jane H. Virginia Beach, VA
