Our hotel recommended this tour to us over the larger one in the area. We were all so glad we listened to their advice. This is a real gem and we highly recommend you take your family on the tour and buy the coffee to bring home. I am drinking my honey roast while I write this review.

The guide was very informative, the tour itself interactive and it was a highlight of our trip. Our group consisted of my 80 year old mom, 3 teenagers and another family with a younger child and grandparents. Everyone was entertained and enjoyed themselves.

We really enjoyed our coffee tour at El Trapiche. It didn't feel touristy or commercial - it's run by a family who take you on a tour of their farm. They teach you about sugar cane, coffee growing, and cacao growing. It was quite interesting and interactive - they gave us several opportunities to try the raw beans and their cocoa made with their beans. It's an easy hike over their hills. At the end, they let you sample their coffee and try a Costa Rican snack. Would definitely recommend!

Very interesting visit,
Lots of information,
Small group size,
Demonstration of traditional methods.

But a certain lack of authenticity?
It seems to have become more of a tourist attraction than a real place of production.
In addition to the remaining coffee production (7 t of fruit per year), sugarcane and cocoa production seems to be maintained only for demonstration to tourists.
There are only 8 cocoa plants under greenhouse exclusively for the show (the altitude and climate conditions are not favorable for this crop).

PURA VIDA

Our tour with Henry was wonderful. He was knowledgeable, patient, and engaging. Our group consisted of young children (6-14) up to an elderly couple and everyone found it enjoyable. The samples during and tasting at the end were a nice addition. It does involve walking a small, but steep hill to see the coffee beans. Not difficult, but I noticed one older member of our group had a more challenging time. Henry was great and waited for everyone before continuing the explanation of coffee production. Thanks for a fun addition to our Original Canopy Tour!

Our family loved this informative and interactive tour of the El Trapiche grounds, and their coffee and sugar cane business. Our tour guide Jeffry was excellent and very knowledgeable. I was afraid that my two sons (13 and 8) wouldn't be interested, but they really liked learning about the entire process. They also have a nice little gift shop where you can buy some of their fantastic coffee after the tour. We definitely recommend this one if you have any interest in learning about Costa Rican history, and how they do coffee differently than other places.

This was a great afternoon spent in Monteverde, tasting a lot of coffee and chocolate as well as sugarcane. The tour was very interactive which helped with all the information we were given. It's a family run business which seems to be expanding and all the people there were very polite and friendly. The views are really nice from there too and our guide Jeffrey was funny and made this a very pleasant experience for all of us on the group with his delivery. He was ready to answer any questions we might have had and gave many examples when sharing his stories, which made this a memorable one.

My family learned so much on this tour. It was jam packed with information about the planting, harvesting, labor, and processing of coffee, chocolate and cane. It was so much information, that I had trouble absorbing it all. My ten year old and I loved trying cacao fruit for the first time and my husband loved learning about the dofferent styles of coffee, inclusing the special honey and peaberry varieties. The sugarcane candy making was also a fun interactive experience. Highly educational and immersive! Our hotel concierge booked the tour with transport, so we didn't know what to expect. It was a great surprise to find how comprehensive this tour was.

We were told this was the best coffee tour in Monteverde and it didn't disappoint. From the moment were were picked up from the door of our hotel to the moment we got back, we had a fantastic experience. A small but authentic and family centred farm, with a perfectly timed tour (1hr45 minutes) and great experiences with coffee, cacao and sugar cane, including many tastings. Our guide, Jefry, was bright, happy, funny, informative, and inspired, with wonderful English and he looked after our group with care, he knew all our names, and tailored the tour for us all throughout. Would highly recommend this tour.

This tour was such an amazing experience. Our guide spoke very fondly about everything they do at the plantation and this made the whole experience very personal. We got to know a lot of interesting facts about coffee, cocoa and sugar canes. We followed the life of a coffee bean from the plant to the coffee pot. Same with the cocoa fruit, tasted delicious chocolates made right there. We saw how the make molasses out of the sugar syrup and we made our own! The tour had a comfortable length with several places to rest. We had delicious snacks at the end and of course tasty coffee.

This is the best coffee/sugar cane/chocolate tour I have ever taken. The guide, Henri, was very knowledgeable. He took his time showing our group of four coffee, then sugar cane, and finally chocolate production. I have been on a similar tour in Guatemala and this was far superior. This tour is well worth the fee charged.
