During our stay in Monteverde, we visited the Cloud Forest and Curi Cancha specifically to go bird watching. However, it was recommended by several people that we check out Finca Ecológica in order to see more of a variety of bird species. Finca Ecológica is a family run farm/reserve that consists of several hiking trails and bird feeder stations. Upon arrival we were greeted by the family that runs the farm. They were so kind and hospitable to us and offered great birding advise for our half day at the farm. We saw several new bird species right at the feeders and a wide variety on the trails. For lunch we ate at Zelmi’s Pizza, which is right on the property. I would definitely recommend a visit to Finca Ecológica to any bird watcher coming to the Monteverde area!

We stumbled upon Finca Ecologica by accident and it made our trip. First we met Geovanny who offered to take us around his family farm. Well, it used to be a farm but now it is entirely dedicated to being a nature reserve. There are literally hundreds of birds to see, butterflies and monkeys. It was like we had arrived at Shangri La. After a wonderful morning of bird watching and wandering around the beautiful wild flower meadows, relaxing by the waterfall and exploring this amazing place, Geovanny's sister made us a delicious lunch. We then spent the afternoon lazing in the hammocks watching the world go by. I cannot praise this family enough. If I ever return to Costa Rica I will stay in their little house they rent out. If there is one thing you do when you visit the Monte Verde / Santa Elena area, go to this remarkable place. Geovanny is one of the kindest souls we have met in our lives. His family is just as lovey too. The reserve was one of the best we saw.

So we’d had a disappointing morning in a cloud forest and thought we’d visit a coffee farm. We couldn’t begin till 2 pm so we decided to go to Zelmi’s Pizza place which is also Finca Ecological San Lois which was close by. We trundled along the 2 km track and almost gave up but REALLY glad we didn’t. Asked if she was open for lunch as no one was about. She said pizza oven take 35 mins to get hot so we were asked to take in her garden. Oh my !!!! This is where you bird watchers out there will die & go to heaven. There are 2 lots of covered benches so you can sit & watch sheltered from sun or rain. Every type of tropical bird you’d want to spot is in that garden. Humming birds. Toucans. Red ones orange ones. Blue ones all flitted about us. The we watched the odd Racoon like creature shin up there bird feeder pole to eat plantain up there. We wasted half an hour just enjoying the wildlife & fauna. Acres of it, plus campsite. Pizza and salad ready we ate lunch in a cute covered cafe. Zelmi’s mum heard a crash and found a green toucanet had flown into the window and came out to rescue it. Our pizza was divine. We had lemon & tamarind juice and coffee plus a gift from the chef hot banana with cream & chocolate. Zelmi knew our coffee tour owners and they knew her. If you are thinking of going off the beaten track from Monteverde do go & find this gorgeous place. We saw more wildlife in half an hour than the rest of our trip put together. Total hidden gem and a lovely lady inside & out. She deserves to do well. Thank you.

you get to see and feel the full grandeur of a tropical forest out here ... animal and bird spotting is a bit of an exercise as the first is too thick and green .. so can spot the monkeys only when they among the canopy top .. great climate too

What a wonderful surprise! We didn't expect a so lovely place at the end of the road we took in san luis! Mister Leitón was a angel, passionate with his dreamland, he told us everything about the way he manages to .be almost autosufficiant for everything ( food, water, electricity) The place is magical , a little walk in the beautiful jungle, a refreshing bath in natural swimming pool near cascades, crossing plantation of bananas or field full of beautiful flowers.2h of pure pleasure you can do with children because the hike is quite easy.we recommand it +++ ps : special dedicate To the horse of the owner who LOVE bananas 😄😄
