The Koekelberg Basilica ranks fifth among the world's largest churches,...

The Koekelberg Basilica ranks fifth among the world's largest churches, after the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Paix in Yamoussokro on the Ivory Coast, St Peter's in Rome, St Paul's in London and Santa Maria Dei Fiori in Florence.Today, the church is in the first place a place of prayer for peace. The church is still used for celebrations of the parish or for big national celebrations. But the basilica is more than that. The basilica has also an important cultural function. It’s a magnificent Art Deco monument, there are two museums, there are yearly different expositions and you can enjoy a wonderful view over Brussels!

The Basilique is one of the landmarks of Brussels - a bit far but easily reachable by public transport. The building itself is enormous, with interesting architecture. The inside was a bit of a disappointment, the quality of the materials used is poor - I had the feeling of being in a public toilet rather than a church... It works... More

I went there today and while the building was beautiful it was quite boring. Everything was closed the museum, restaurant etc even though I checked opening times. It was also colder inside than outside so I couldn't stay long. Was good to just sit and reflect (and pray if you pray).

We visited on Saturday 3rd December, caught the Metro from the city centre to Elisabeth and walked through Parc Elisabeth to the basilica. The walk through the park was lovely and only took 10-15 minutes. It probably helped that it was a beautiful crisp clear day in Brussels. The church itself is very imposing and although done in a modern... More

One of the largest churches in the world but it's so big it lacks a little character. I'm sure that during services it would be more atmospheric.

Very nice basilica with a coupole , merit a visit in Koekelberg/Brussels; You can also visit the chocolate museum, it's near the Koekelberg basilica.

Used to live in Brussels for 4 years with a view on the basilica on the Hill of Mercy. Part of the dream of King Leopold II, who wanted to transform Brussels into one of the leading cities in the world. Finally completed in the late 1960s. I'm a huge fan of art nouveau and art deco, but this building... More

OK, it is not the most elegant of churches, this enormous brick Basilica is second largest in the wordl I think. It is the venue for some pompous official celebrations (Te Deum Mass with the royal family etc). One can climb very high to have a sublime view on the Brussels skyline. And the venue sometimes hosts really interesting exhibitions,... More

It's nice to walk around this beast of a building and see it from multiple angles. On the inside, I didn't find it to be as impressive. There is an elevator that takes you to to the top. The view you have from there is really great.

Beautiful art Deco basilica, set at top of beautiful parkway. You can drive or get public transport, you can also walk from the city centre. Fabulous views from the top, very peaceful inside for those seeking reflection.
