The Koekelberg Basilica ranks fifth among the world's largest churches, after the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Paix in Yamoussokro on the Ivory Coast, St Peter's in Rome, St Paul's in London and Santa Maria Dei Fiori in Florence. Today, the church is in the first place a place of prayer for peace. The church is still used for celebrations of the parish or for big national celebrations. But the basilica is more than that. The basilica has also an important cultural function. It’s a magnificent Art Deco monument, there are two museums, there are yearly different expositions and you can enjoy a wonderful view over Brussels!

To get to the Basilica take line 2 or line 6 and exit at Elizabeth. (At our hotel we were told to exit the exit before Elizabeth, but Elizabeth is the closest.) Leading up to the Basilica is a walk through a pretty park. Tall...More

Huge. Quiet. Excellent views. Wonderful park in front. It's free to get in, but if you pay €5 (I think) (approximately) you can take the elevator and some stairs to the top for some great views. When we went up on a Wednesday, we were...More

This basilica is the 5th biggest church in the world. We took a long walk through the park towards the basilica and was rewarded with the grandness of the place.

Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Brussels Is such a beautiful and grand place to see. The church was dedicated to the Sacred Heart, inspired by the Basilique du Sacré-Coeur in Paris. Symbolically, King Leopold II laid the first stone of the basilica in 1905 during...More

I love art deco but ...... I miss the nobility and elegance of this style in this case. The least interesting church in Brussels, in my opinion. It's a huge megalomania project. The interior space does not have the energy you find in every other...More

Huge church. Beautiful stained glass. Extraordinary example of the Art Deco building style. Excellent views of the city. The hop-on-hop off buses stop here.

This was a nice visit, easy to access via metro and bus. I have to admit it wasnt as good as the photos I’d seen previously but certainly nicer inside

False; the metro is grey and orange, the basilica is more brown/beige with a green roof (some parts are of white stone from Burgundy). And considering what you call "faeces colour", I'd take that quite seriously if I were you and go to the doctor...More
