The Koekelberg Basilica ranks fifth among the world's largest churches,...

The Koekelberg Basilica ranks fifth among the world's largest churches, after the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Paix in Yamoussokro on the Ivory Coast, St Peter's in Rome, St Paul's in London and Santa Maria Dei Fiori in Florence.Today, the church is in the first place a place of prayer for peace. The church is still used for celebrations of the parish or for big national celebrations. But the basilica is more than that. The basilica has also an important cultural function. It’s a magnificent Art Deco monument, there are two museums, there are yearly different expositions and you can enjoy a wonderful view over Brussels!

Pompous... but lots of things to see (and hear) around the building

OK, it is not the most elegant of churches, this enormous brick Basilica is second largest in the wordl I think. It is the venue for some pompous official celebrations (Te Deum... read more

OK, it is not the most elegant of churches, this enormous brick Basilica is second largest in the wordl I think. It is the venue for some pompous official celebrations (Te Deum Mass with the royal family etc). One can climb very high to have a sublime view on the Brussels skyline. And the venue sometimes hosts really interesting exhibitions,... More

It's nice to walk around this beast of a building and see it from multiple angles. On the inside, I didn't find it to be as impressive. There is an elevator that takes you to to the top. The view you have from there is really great.

Beautiful art Deco basilica, set at top of beautiful parkway. You can drive or get public transport, you can also walk from the city centre. Fabulous views from the top, very peaceful inside for those seeking reflection.

The Basilique by itself lacks a bir of atmosphere, and is quite empty. I like to see churches that are Alive with locals and their liturgies, not just a monument. Anyway it's huge and the visit to the dome worth it. The view is good and gives you beautiful panorama pictures.

This church, or basilica, is supposed to be the 5th largest religious building of the world. Well it is big for sure that I can tel you. Once inside you will notice that not all the space is in use for religious ceremonies. I guess the building has just become to big for that. There are several expositions and little... More

From the outside it is very impressive. Once we had found the entrance (the first door was to a restaurant (a little unusual in a church) we were disappointed. It looks like it was built to be merely bigger than anything else. It lacked 'atmosphere'

Impressive basilic! In every way it is an example of grandeur. Often there are exhibitions. Go inside and take your time to admire this jewel of architecture.

a great hidden building. save approx 1 hour for this church as there is also a panaromic view at the top..... well worth the 5euro (although i am not a believer in churches selling). i would have made a donation! the church is huge, there are gardens if you wished to take a picnic and there is atmosphere as the... A visit to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, also known as the Koekelberg Basilica, won’t disappoint. This huge church, one of the largest in the world, and dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was built between 1905 and 1970. Besides the huge basilica itself, designed in a unique Art Deco style, there are great views of the city.... More
