Such a rich and amazing museum with a lot of fun facts and artifacts. big big turn off is that everything is in italian and the guide only speaks italian.

I was really looking forward to this museum, maybe I built it up in my head to be something more than what it is. The first huge let down... the famous bronze statue of Zeus, found in Ugento through the sewage drainage of houses... the one here at the museum is just a copy. The real one is at the Museum of Taranto. There are truly beautiful frescoes that have been discovered behind the walls of this old Franciscan edifice. There are a few authentic pieces from a nearby necropolis dated to the Messapic culture / 4th century BC. I am into ancient culture, my family, not really. There's a wine jug with a male nude figure on the handle, from the 5th century BC!! It just is so interesting to me the thought/cultural choices are so different so long ago. I don't remember what we paid to get in, but I remember thinking it was too much for what was offered here at this little museum. Also, IMPORTANT tip right here... if you want to see The Crypt of the Crucifixion (underground frescoes from 13th century) you make the arrangements with this museum here in town. It's a 5 minute drive out to the real necropolis to see the paintings from 13th to 17th century. The people at the Archaeological Museum, in town, get in their car and drive out to open it for you.

More than a museum, here you will find a treasure trove of chapels where people have worshipped for centuries. There is a funeral site with the remains of a poor soul who came to a violent end. I don't know how I feel about his skeleton being on view but I treated him with reverence and took no photos. A modern roof preserves ancient finds...grave goods, tombs, statuary, frescos and so much more. We had the place to ourselves and wandered about at our leisure with the brochure ( only in Italian) we definitely got our €3 worth.
