Originally built in 1557 to defend and protect the local fisherman by a garrison of 33 men and eventually transferred over to the council (To be used as offices) and rebuilt. Located inside is a small chapel and museum. During our visit, the museum was closed and chapel (Known as Virgin of Loreto or Capilla Yirgen De Loreto) was free to enter, as is the courtyard. A nice find and worth a quick stop if your in the area. Access may not be immediately obvious. We needed to walk around to what might be described as the back of the fort for access, as what looked like the front door was locked.

This is the main historic building of Santa Pola which is actually the city centre.
Lovely building and surounding which is the home of the Sea City Museum. It is also the home of Santa Pola patron on her lovely and cute chapel (Capilla de la Virgen de Loreto).
If there is something happening in Santa Pola, it is definitely not too far from El Castillo

We strolled through the centre of Santa Pola having wandered around the Port area on a warm October evening. Lovely buildings with a chapel and a museum. Christmas decorations were just being put up - bet it looks lovely then! Nice place to wander.

We entered by a strange long tunnel then got in a small lift and went up really high as this castle is soooooo high up! I get vertigo so when I got out of lift was slightly apprehensive but we stopped at the cafe for chocolate and coffee! The views were absolutely fabulous as we were so high! There was a lot of walking on very uneven ground but was interesting! There were two museums inside on different levels and showed some really old artefacts like pots and flints! On every level was notices in Spanis and English so very good!

The castle was built in the mid 16th century and has been restored since then. There are two interesting museums in the castle. The first is the castle museum and shows the archaeology and history of the area from prehistoric times to the Roman era. For me it was very interesting and the exhibits were well displayed with notices in English as well as in Spanish and Catalan. The second museum was the museum of the sea with exhibits relating to the maritime traditions of the town.

No information available to explain where in history this fits into. Four walls, windows with bars. Little of interest

The castle itself is being renovated . It’s free to enter and there isn’t much to view of the castle itself . In a couple of years it will be different I’m sure.

The little museums are excellent, and we were told by a very helpful, knowledgable archaeologist there that they have a lot more to show. It’s well worth a visit now , and will likely get better .

Most of the exhibits have a section in English for those , like me who don’t speak Spanish .

Castillo-Fortaleza: beautifully kept fort, museums, a place to spend paseo time, an evening stroll outside. On fiesta days it really comes alive with booming of cannons: re-enactment of Moors versus Christians, participants all dressed up in Moorish garb or sequined splendour; explosions of fireworks in daytime; even medieval garb in Medieval Market; Semana Santa solemnity at Easter. Fireworks spectacular & competition, the many fiestas they have annually; medieval fairs, and more. I have gait/walking challenges (stroke), all sightseeing has to be well-researched and not overly taxing; I wear a legbrace. All fiestas possible with my unsteady walking gait. Contact ayuntamiento for timetables for annual fiestas.

There's a courtyard inside the walls, with a chapel and a couple of museums. There's not a lot to see of the castle itself though.
