We took the half hour drive around Huelva, after visiting La Rabida and Muella de las Carabelas, as a relaxing way to round off our day of sightseeing in the area. Just behind the 2.3 km golden sand beach is the parallel area of high sand dunes and woodland. It's a great example of a coastal forest. There are numerous footpaths/walkways that cross the area, running to and from the beach. It was a delightful walk. We meandered across all the wooden walkways, trying to spot some of the the local wildlife. My husband saw a hoopoe a couple of times which, sadly, I missed. However, I saw a shrike, which he missed. It was handy that we both had our binoculars. During our zigzags, we walked along the lovely stretch of sandy beach as well. Our biggest discovery came while trying to follow a bird that had been hopping around in a tall tree. Amazingly, we spotted a well camouflaged chameleon. It was very hard to make out, high in the branches. But it moved just enough (slowly) for us to observe it for a fair while. Lucky us. There are boards up around the reserve, giving helpful information about the area, in English as well as Spanish. It's certainly worth walking along more than just one of the walkways. You never know what you might see & it's a shady break from the sun. .

Turn left from Barceló Mar and start walking. Well signposted turn offs will take you through the trees to the beach. Beautiful to stop and look at trees and birds and any other wildlife you are fortunate enough to spot! Walk down beside the road as far as you can then get on to the beach. You can walk to the next town if you’re up to it! We did, tiring but worth the experience.

Staying at the Punta Umbria Mar is idea for walks through this national park. If you come out of the hotel and turn left you are at the beginning of the walk. You have a choice of five turn offs to the left which take you through the trees to the beach. The first is snout 500 meters away from the hotel, and the fifth is 3 kilometres from the hotel. You can then walk back I’d the beach. Great for working off a few calories.

Variety of different length walks starting from the mainroad along well marked wooden trails on to the beach, making your walk as short or long as you fancy! Good signage of the things that you might see,

We stayed in a hotel adjacent to the Paraje, and it was a real pleasure to spend time birding here at every opportunity . Shrikes, nightingales, warblers, nightjars everywhere.

There are a series of boardwalks leading through the reserve (sand dunes and umbrella pines) onto a lovely beach. You can watch the wildlife from these boardwalks but you are not allowed to wander amongst the dunes.

Mile after mile of gorgeousness. Lots of wildlife, so many varieties of birds. Apparently lots of mice too but thankfully didn't see any of those. Would have loved to go there in the evening but unfortunately we did wander out after dusk but lots of beach sellers bedded down in the trees rather put us off.

Really nice place for walking or cycling, and just in front of a long, nice beach.
Quiet area far from the city.
