Mendelbahn

About
64% inclination, so you hope the technology is dependable. And to your relief: the design and construction comes from Swiss engineer, Emil Strub. Opened in 1903, the Mendelbahn is regarded as the first electric powered cable car in Tyrol and is the steepest and longest continous cable car in Europe. A trip up the Mendel mountain is already an adventure in itself. And then, there's the impressive panorama of the Etsch river valley and the South Tyrolean Unterland!Technical data: course lenght: 2,37 kilometers, travel time: 12 minutes, altitude variance: 850 meters.

If you are anywhere near the Mendel Pass, you should really take a bit of time to experience this attraction. The ride takes you to St. Anton, near Caldaro, and back again (or visa-versa). The views are stunning as you traverse the face of this very steep mountain. The tickets are moderately priced and there are eating facilities at both ends of the trip, which takes about 15-20 minutes.

Tip: The best times to visit are the shoulder seasons (May-June and September) when the crowds of tourists have thinned-out. Check for times of operation, as these can be affected by weather.

We had taken the Mendelbahn some 25 years ago. Everything is modern but looks now more like a metro of some kind. The station in Kaltern was under renovation. There were many tourists and so we did on and return with full trains. We could not see much,

The journey up this steep funicular affords fantastic views over the Adige valley.
There are places at the top to stop for a drink/bite to eat, or to just enjoy the view.
The station in Caldaro/Kaltern can be reached by foot or by the local bus.
I went in the late-ish afternoon and had the train to myself (well, apart from the driver).
You don't need long at the top, though you can use the funicular to reach walks and have a day out.

This train is the best way to access the top where you will find a nice little village where you can either hike the surroundings or relax with an Aperol Spritz.
Very nice!

Very steep and high but really worth taking it and stand while you get up to the top. We went there as a group of 13 and got a good group rate.
