About
The Fondation Beyeler is a museum of modern and contemporary art open 365 days a year. It is considered one of the world's most beautiful museums. Its exhibitions of renowned artists of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries have brought the museum international recognition and established it as Switzerland's most popular art museum. The focus is the visitor's personal and sensory experiences in encountering art and nature. The art museum is located in an English park with a historical villa, old trees, and water lily ponds. The museum building, designed by award-winning Italian architect Renzo Piano, fits elegantly into the cultural landscape and offers beautiful views of the park.

Beautiful modern art museum located about 10 km from Basel city Center. Easily reachable with No.6 tram from Market Square - a pleasant 20 minute ride. The museum was designed by Renzo Piano and the building itself is 'très réussi'. The modern art collection assembled by M. Beyeler over 60 years is outstanding, and the Giacomettis, Rothkos, paintings of G. Richter, E. Kelly, S. Francis etc well presented. There are also regular temporary exhibits - one by Georgia O'Keeffe at the time of my visit, which alas was (over)crowded from almost the opening of the museum at 10 am, and on a weekday. If you have the Basel Card for public transport, entrance to the museum is half price.

This is a review for April 2019 visit when the museum hosted exhibition of Picasso’s Blue and Rose periods with some paintings that are rarely seen in public. Finding a parking near the museum took some time, eventually we are able to find a public lot.

The exhibition building is designed by Renzo Piano, it is well organized with excellent lighting. We were able to purchase the tickets online greatly reduced our entry time. The museum’s own collections is also very impressive.

The whole campus is calm and serene with a separate building house the gift shop and restaurant. We were in a rush to arrive the museum and skipped the lunch. We dined at the museum restaurant afterwards with hearty delicious food and friendly services. A excellent visit.

This art museum is a small gem hidden in a corner of Switzerland (literally, as the border village of Riehen is surrounded on most sides by Germany). It comprises mostly works bought by Mr and Mrs Beyeler in the 20th century, including many from living artists, so it contains very original art pieces. Admittedly, you will not be able to see all of them in one visit: the gallery is not big enough to show all its holdings at once, and also hosts many rotating exhibitions, so each visit will be different and of varying satisfaction. But the overall high standard of the artworks means you will always be able to find beautiful pieces of modern art on display.
When I visited in February 2020 half of the gallery space was taken up by an Edward Hopper retrospective, which was decent but not as interesting as it sounds: the focus was on Hopper's landscapes which I personally do not find as fascinating as his portraits. The selection from the permanent collection on display was far more impressive. There was a good selection of Picassos; a room hung with 5 very different Rothko canvases; very unique works by both Lichtenstein and Warhol; Giacometti-galore; and a large, airy hall hung with Monet's 'pond art', including one of his famously large water lilies paintings. There's no denying that the Beyelers had good taste, not to mention deep pockets! I left the museum wondering what else might be in the gallery stores. The very affordable souvenir book shows that there are more works by Picasso, Paul Klee, Matisse and American post-1945 art to explore. This is therefore a place that deserves return visits.
I agree with some reviewers that the admission price of 25CHF is a little steep, even by Swiss standards, but as long as you spend a night in Basel you will receive a free Baselcard giving you a half-price discount on admission. Transport to the site is, of course, excellent since this is Switzerland: you can catch Tram 6 anywhere in the center of Basel which will take you to a stop directly in front of the museum in about 20 minutes. Just make sure to take a tram going in the right direction, towards Riehen Grenze.

As much as I love the Beyeler, this "exhibition" or better put, experience, was a disappointment. 25,- CHF to walk across a few boardwalks over acid green water through empty rooms was certainly NOT worth the money. Plus, since we had booked for 7pm, we could not enter the museum where apparently there is a small exhibition on view.
We did enjoy the sunset sitting on the grass observing folks follow in our footsteps. However, since we had to catch a train, we could not stay on for the "light show".
Perhaps the entrance fee should be reduced for those arriving after museum hours. After 9pm it's anyways FREE "entry".

We went to see CLOSE-UP & GOYA exhibitions. We booked timed tickets in advance. The Goya exhibition was packed with visitors. People were one on top of the other with no social distancing at all. We appreciate that there is no demand for that in Switzerland, but that was too much for me. Despite the fact that Green Passport was checked at the entrance, We felt bad and left the exhibition without viewing any of the rooms. It is a shame as we visited the area specially for Goya exhibition (coming from London).
We ended up viewing Close-Up exhibition that was interesting and well presented.

If in Basel, this museum is a must-see! And the restaurant is truly wonderful with an extremely unusual and excellent menu with great prices. I spent the afternoon their this week to see the Georgia O'Keeffe Retrospective. To explain the importance of this small museum, the O'Keeffe Retrospective is the first in history, her work hangs in her own museum in New Mexico, USA, and of course some of her works are in the permanent collections of major museums and private collections. The Georgia O'Keeffe Retrospective toured only to Paris, Madrid and Basel. That is it!

The museum is very similar to my mind to the Fondation Giannada in Martigny, Valais, Switzerland. It has a small and impressive permanent collection, but then it has shows. The building it very beautiful as modern architecture goes, and the surrounding gardens are truly exquisite.

I must say I am a museum lover and have visited most of the important museums of the world. I really loved this visit here, it was my first.

Every exhibition here is of interest. I have been coming to this wonderful museum for years, and they put up great artists of every genre and nationality. The building and the park are lovely, only the price of entry is quite steep.
Fortunately they managed to extend the Hopper-exhibition till after the confinement, so we got to see it. Unforgettable. The pernmanent collection is also always worth revisiting

The Fondation Beyeler is truly one of the best museums for contemporary art that I have seen so far. I've been here twice. through the changing exhibitions you can always discover new artists and works. The guided tours are highly recommended. The park is also very nice.

Great location, beautiful setting, beautiful permanent collection.
It is rare when a museum scores almost perfect on all the above mentioned criteria.
An absolute must see for every art lover.
The Hopper exhibition was top notch and super well presented.
I am already looking forward to the future Goya exhibition.

Dishonest and expensive museum experience. Only few of The permanent exhibits are on display at the moment. There is zero signage and warning of this. Full price admission still charged.
Such a pity to tarnish the reputation of this museum.
