Beautiful beach. Make sure you don't turn up on a rainy day. Quite touristy and felt quite safe as well.

A really beautiful beach. Great for families as well as party goers, with an active night life. Great surfing beach. Lots of good restaurants and hotels without breaking ur wallet.

Great beach to o with your family. The ocean is safe, and you can get some simple eats, drinks and beach chairs on the beach under the shade of a palm umbrella. Truly an amazing beach. My granddaughter, 4 years old, just loved it.

Beautiful beach. Quiet in August. Good local bars ranging from Dots to Smoke &Bitters. Lots of surfing opportunities, and some friendly locals to help you have an amazing time. Here with a family of 5. Very safe and enough to see and do for us all.

This is the most beautiful beach I have been to. Paradise sandy cove, swimming, surfing, lovely relaxed but high quality local cafes and restaurants with lush gardens, monkeys and colourful birds. Unspoilt by commercialisation, no big hotels or busy roads nearby.

Absolutely loved this beach, the vibe, and the views. If you want to chill, swim, snorkeling or surf - this place is the right one. Away from crowds with a few places to eat, drink and get a sunbed. You can rent surfboards (very cheap) in here . There are 2 surfing areas: the main beach break (perfect for beginners) and a fast left wave in the Eastern side of the beach. I was surfing when green turtles popped up right under me! That was so unique. The vibe in the water is also incredible - people surfing here are very cheering and happy. No screaming or unnecessary competition for waves. It's just perfect. So far my favorite beach in Sri Lanka ! The western side of the beach is very calm and no waves if you want to swim and snorkel.
Upon consuming something at the beach bar you can use the sunbeds without any extra charge (opposite to most places in Unawatuna, Dalawella or Mirissa).

Between 10am and 5pm you can walk from one end of this beach to the other across the loungers and then back again over the surf on top of the boards without getting any sand or sea in-between your toes.
Despite this it’s a beautiful bay that we had more or less to ourselves at sunrise every morning. You can also find a nice spot under a tree to read your book away from the bars that play non-stop reggae.
Businesses have grown organically along the beach and it’s just a matter of time before more established hotels take over. C’est La Vie!
There are some great places to eat and sleep near Hiri beach. If you’re looking for a quiet, chilled-out, deserted spot then head to Dikwella beach and the guys at Machan’s hut will sort you out with a magical g&t.

There are litterally rentals all over the beach and they all seemed ok to us - good gear and nice staff. The water is although crammed with people since the bay is so small. So for surfing in general I would head to Weligama instead - beginner friendly waves most of the time and more space, better wave formation and less current.

Hi, I just stayed there for one week. It rains from time to time but surfing in rain to me is actually very sensational and enjoyable. Waves are small and clean around full moon. When I left, it started to get bumpy, though still very nice.

I just booked a hotel from 7th-12th May, but now am worried about the weather. For sun and swimming should I go to a different beach at this time of year? Or is it generally okay at this time of year?

Hi, If I were you I’d get the bus from Matara to Dikwella bus station and from there jump into a tuk tuk down to Hiriketiya.

Hello, where would you recommend we stay in Hiriketiya Beach (with air-conditioning). I have a young child.

Another place that I wished I’d checked out is Salt House or Pepper House. They both looked like awesome places to stay.
