The best time to go is in the evening to witness the stunning, golden sunset. Waves can get too rough making it unsuitable for swimming.

The Matara Beach is a promenade which stretches for a one kilometer along the coast in the heart of the financial and business district of Southern Province, Sri Lanka.
This is a popular destination for children, vendors, teenagers, lovers, kite flyers, merrymakers and all those who want to indulge in their favorite pastimes next to the sea under the open sky. On Saturday and Sunday evenings, the land is busy with day trippers, picnickers and food vendors.
Matara Beach is administered and maintained by the Matara Municipal Council.

A very nice sand beach with big waves when I was there. Saw one guy have his hip dislocated by the waves so pays to be careful when swimming. The water was warm, the beach was cleaner than most in Sri Lanka and there was food and drinks available from the restaurants on the beach at affordable prices.

Lovely semi circular beach stretching out from the ancient dutch fort to Brown's Hill. I always sit in a pastry shop ( P& S ) gazing out at this lovely scene having b'fast every time I travel to Colombo. After the 2004 tsunami , which destroyed this whole area , the beach promenade & the marine drive has been nicely renovated. There are nice seats , playing areas, parking bays.A common sight is to see young couples under umbrellas sitting & gazing out at this lovely view.

I have been visiting the Matara Beach since I was a child and have seen it changing over time. Those days the beach was just sand dunes sometimes so high that you couldn't see the sea. But today they have all been leveled and turf laid. It has now become a buzz of activity in the evenings especially the weekends. There is a children's park that has been put up with rides and swings. The rest of the beach spanning about a kilometre is open area. Youth have made it a cricket and football ground. Joggers use the beach. A breathtaking sunset could be viewed with the Pouliers Island now turned into a monastery in silhouette. Matara beach has its beauty although sea bathing is not recommended due to the presence of current and quick sand.

Matara beach is pretty, and great for local couples canoodling under umbrellas, but for tourists there are a few cons: water is too choppy for swimming, and the length of the beach runs alongside a main road so there's no privacy at all. You wouldn't want to sunbathe in a bikini for sure! Better head further round the coast, Bentota beach is amazing.
