Neighborhood: Southern Kyoto
Southern Kyoto has a reserved air. Though the Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of Kyoto's major tourist attractions, the surrounding nature, parks, gardens, temples, and shrines provide less-visited spaces for strolling and reflection. The Fushimi Inari Shrine itself is made up of 32,000 sub-shrines, and the mountain they are dotted across beckons hikers, picnickers, and lovers of the outdoors. Many of the mountain's off-set paths aren't frequented by tourists, and the mountain's serenity can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Southern Kyoto is the place to enjoy being outside, and to pay your respects to the ancient architecture and gods of the land that are celebrated here.

The day we were there, there were many locals in their traditional costumes and many parents bring their children there for special prayers for their academic achievements etc. There were also a wedding entourage and the whole atmosphere is very solemn, peaceful but beautiful and respectful. The many women and children in traditional garments brought lots of colour to the place.

Uji Shrine is located in a small village near to Uji timber bridge. The place is quiet and peaceful as differed from other commercial areas. We liked the atmosphere around and recommended to others during their visit to Uji.

This is a small little shrine next to Ujigami Shrine, and along the Uji River. Not a must see as its just average but if you are visiting Ujigami, can just take a quick look at this.

Not worth a visit although it's on route to the Genji museum and Ujigami shrine. However the Ujigami shrine is also not worth it. Haven't visited the museum though. It's free so no loss except your time.

Uji shrine looks smaller and older than Ujigami. Rabbit omikuji is shaped different from Ujigami's. It's turned back to care of you as if you walk behind, not get lost.

This shrine was a small one very near to the river side but the area was very quite and peaceful that you still liked to stroll around the area to take photos and to admire the atmosphere around.

On a visit to Byoden-in you will want to visit Ujigami Shrine, one of the oldest in Japan, and while you are at Ujigami, say hello to its next-door neighbor, Uji Shrine. It was built to console the sole of a Prince who committed suicide in Uji River.

Uji Shrine is small if compared with that of Ujigami Jinja but you still can have a leisure stroll around and take pictures of the shrine. We saw a pair of visitor taking wedding photos at the frontage during our visit to the shrine late last month.

This is the "pre shrine" before the oldest shrine in Japan, the Ujigami jinja. There's a nice long walk leading to the shrine. The priest at the shrine was not at all nice when I had my nokyocho stamped.
