We had a nice morning walking through the ruins. Well maintained and not that expensive. There is a parking near the castle entrance, not that big, so come early.
Nice biergarten in the first courtyard of the castle. They had a local orchestra playing Humpah music, was really nice, too bad it was full due to COVID limitations on tables.

This is just 3km from town so could definitely walk. However there is plenty of walking and when you are there nice walking trails. The castle is well presented with some work going on in one section. It hasn't been fully restored which adds to its charm. The views are fantastic.

Well maintained medieval castle ruins. Huge grounds and castle with many former rooms to explore The views are amazing at 1,385 feet. There is also a reasonably priced beer garden.

I love old castles and Rottein is perched on a hill overlooking Lorrach and the surrounding area. There were no signs directing me the way as I arrived at Lorrach railway station from Basel so had to rely on asking locals which wasn't easy as it was raining and most people were indoors. I knew it was north west so I walked out of the station to Haagener Strasse then along that road through the park, across the covered bridge where I turned right then forked left to a main road and village. I took first left into a cul de sac where there was a footpath with another footpath going left up through the woods to the castle (45 mins walk from town). It was only 2 Euros entry but I paid in Swiss francs. It is all ruins but very interesting and at the top of one of the towers are great views of the surrounding area. They give you a leaflet explaining what the different parts of the castle are and there is a nice little museum next to the ticket booth that is worth a look. A great day excursion from Basel as only less than 30 mins on the train.

We stayed in Basel for a few nights and thought we would visit Germany as we were so close to the border and we love Germany. It was €3 each into the castle, we were the only People there until we were leaving and 3 others were coming in. We Climbed right to the top of the tower and the views were spectacular, we could even see Basel in the distance. The castle is just a few mins by bus from Lörrach train station and you get left off at the bottom of a hill, there is a few mins uphill Walking to the castle from there and up the tower but it’s so worth it!

Visited with my small kids 1 and 3 years old. Great stuff. Many small and steep steps so bring a carrying system.

Possible to barbecue in the forest behind the castle.

Made a day trip over from the French side of the Basel area. Taxi from St. Louis to Rotteln 50 Euro. Then going out we took a Lorrach-area Mercedes taxi into Basel for 60 Euro. Modest entrance fee, youngest kids were free. Nice small museum with play castle on 2nd floor. The castle itself is picturesque, very interesting. Had a fantastic lunch at the castle's restaurant near the entrance - this was one of my favorite meals in all of Europe. Food was simple, country-style, straightforward, with decent/honest prices and good, friendly staff. I'd definitely recommend devoting an entire afternoon to coming here, from Basel.

Impressive castle ruin with partially restored elements excellent for a day trip from Basel with the family. From the two accessible towers, there is a great view of the surrounding area. Small museum with artifacts and nice small restaurant for the aperitivo after the visit round off the great experience - definitely worth it if you are a castle aficionado like we are.

Nice castle ruin. The views are fantastic from the top of the towers. There is a restaurant/eatery area at the base which is very nice. Taking a tour is probably a good idea for this castle because it's a bit challenging to get to and from. We took an Uber there from Basel Switzerland, which was fine, but then there is no Uber service once there. We ended up taking a bus and then the train to get back.
