About
Oudenaarde, the starting point for further exploration of the Flemish Ardennes, a thousand years of history amidst endless rolling hills. The MOU brings its history to life. Through interactive media and historical pieces, you'll travel through time, from medieval times up till today. You will bump into Emperor Charles, with his illegitimate daughter Margaret, Adriaan Brouwer, with its famous beer scenes, and Louis XIV, who bites the dust. Famous people like Frank De Bleeckere explain why they are fascinated by Oudenaarde. Topmodel Cesar Casier and four others are posing for the lens of famous photographer Stephan Vanfleteren. Furthermore, the MOU is situated in one of Belgium’s most beautiful town halls, which is located at the market square of Oudenaarde. It takes up the oldest part of the 14th-century Cloth Hall, symbol of Oudenaarde’s glorious textile past. Whoever acquires a taste for more, can admire 15 authentic tapestries in the High Cloth Hall and the De Boever-Alligoridès collection in three other rooms, one of the largest silver collections in Flanders.

We visited MOU in Oudenaarde specifically to see the ambitious exhibition on Margaret of Parma, daughter of Emperor Charles V of Spain and Johanna Van der Gheynst in her hometown.
It is an excellent and interesting exhibition on a turning point in European history. While the exhibition was impressive, the contemporary performance at the local church was not worth the detour.

This museum, focused on history of the Flemish Ardennes, is housed in a superb example of a town hall typical of town hall buildings throughout Flanders from several centuries ago. Inside is a wonderful museum, very well done. There are several floors, one dedicated to tapestries, one dedicated to various items (silverware, dishes, etc.), and one that has rotating exhibitions. I recommend the audio guide (included with price of admission).
The tapestries were extraordinary, in both size, history, color, and detail. Viewing the tapestries is reason enough to go to this museum.
Toilets and small gift shop available in the museum.
Highly recommended.

Splendid museum built in and around the old 'lakenhalle', the weavers markethall. Here you will find unique pieces of medieval tapestry and silver produced in Oudenaarde. You have also access to parts of the town hall.

With friends I quickly picked up the Margaret of Parma exhibition. Very nice exhibition by the way but do have a comment. One has to choose a time slot, but if you are unlucky like us, I think there are more people inside than anticipated. Certainly a lot of groups with a guide who think the business is theirs so you can not fully enjoy it, also due to the fact that it is not so big there. That was actually a setback and I wondered what the point of that time slot could be in the end.

The museum is famous for its late medieval tapestries, mostly produced in the town which was once famous for its tapestries. The tapestries are very nicely displayed, and upon entering one receives a leaflet with information detailing the scenes as well as some background information. Above, in some very nice rooms, there is a very nice display of antique silverware, both produced locally, as well as other European countries. Some pieces are little masterpieces. The museum also has a good educational historical part, but explanations are only in Dutch for this section.

I have now taken a few visitors here, this museum is relatively small , but really interesting and the tapestries alone are worth the visit. For a 1 hour whistle stop history tour this is a must

What a beautiful museum, in such a great building (the Town Hall), and what a unique collection of old tapestries and silver.

The MOU is located in the beautiful late Gothic former town hall, the visit starts with a presentation of the painter Adriaan Brpuwer, born in Oudenaarde, who came back to live in Oudenaarde after his family left for Haarlem in Holland after the inquisition started to bite. He died destitute quite young at just 34 yo.
Then an overview of the town’s history; then a whole floor showing some ten very large 4 - 5 centuries old rather faded tapistries the city during the 15th to 18th century was famous for. Sometimes in a small room one floor up a lady tapistry restorer will demonstrate how that’s done, apparently she’s the only tapestry restorer left, she wasn’t present when we visited. Then two floors under the very high roof showing a very large collection of church and table silver donated to the museum. If you take the time to visit, a very worth while visit, recommended!

Visiting the Brouwer exhibition I discovered this World Heritage building, dating back from 1526. It is small, which encourages to explore slowly and thoroughly. The building itself of course is the most obvious item to admire. But the 15 Flemish tapestries are also impressive.

Not only the town hall is fantastic, but until mid-december they show an exhibition on Adriaen Brouwer, painter " between Rubens and Rembrandt. Don't miss this occasion to see 30 of his 60 known ( small ) canvases, and some of his contempararies. As space is limited, choose a quiet time lock on the museum website.

Hello,
I tried to find information on their web page. They claim to be open every day of the year. But I can not be 100% sure. As 2nd of January is a Wednesday , there is a good chance that it is open. The museum is really nice, but small and the great Adriaan Brouwer exhibition is finished ....
