Taxi up, walk down! Great views
Oct 2020 • Couples
The taxi wasn’t cheap - €20- and the walk down very hard on our poor thighs! But the time at Castelmola was worth the trip, to get stunning views made all the better for the further climb up to the ruined castle.
The walk down starts via stairs to the side of the road near the café, passing a house called Casa Sara across a car park.

There is not much left of the castle, but its views are outstanding, specially on a clear day! Nice place for a picnic :)

Castle in the clouds
Sep 2020
The medieval town of Castelmola can be viewed for miles around, looking as if it is perched somewhat precariously atop a peak.
Access is best via the regular buses from Tarmina or by taxi (next to the Chiesa Sant'Antonio Abate). Cost of a taxi to climb the 4.7km to the top is about 20 euros. Be prepared to hang onto your seats on the hairpin bends!

On arrival into the black and white marbled Piazza S Georgio you can either enjoy the panoramic views overlooking the bay and spot Mount Etna, or head for the cafe which has stood there since 1907. The owners purport it to be the site and origin of the local almond and bitter orange wine called vino alla mandorla opposite are the steps up to the castle, a Norman build. There is a lift available so even wheelers have the opportunity to take in the wonderful views.
There is no admission fee

Interesting hill town above Taormina
Feb 2020
If you are not an athlete, you best take the bus to get to Castelmola. A splendid old village stuck on top of the mountain overlooking Taormina and offering spectacular views of Mt. Etna. Many tourist shops offering local handicrafts, but mainly the local wine made from almonds, Mandorla. Pier de Cat, a local Sicilian Bistro at the busstop will evn teach you how to drink it properly. Ice cold, with a rind of the delicious local orange, sipping it slowly is the real thing.

A climb up to the castle is invigorating, but offers only the remnants of the original walls. However, an even better view of Mt. Etna.

Historic ruins
Jan 2020
While there is not much left to see of the Castillo de Castelmola, it is still worthwhile to make the climb up to see. There are wonderful views of Mount Etna as well as Taormina so that makes it lovely to see. You can imagine how impressive this castle was in it's day

Better than Taormino
Dec 2019 • Family
Don't miss this gem. Drive as far up the hill along the torturous windy narrow road from Taormino to nearly the top where there is public parking. Then do the last bit on foot to the piazza. From here, go up to the Castle ruins for a tremendous view of Mt Etna, the coast, sea and Taormino. Back at the piazza, sit at the cafe for an almond wine.

A lovely little town located high above Taormina. On a clear day, a wonderful view of Etna Volcano.

The easiest and most convenient way for anyone who is NOT an alpinist and is not A Foot Climber to the Castelmola is by using the city bus that takes you to the square at the entrance to the town. It is highly recommended not to come with a private vehicle, one of the town's main source of income is parking fines (U have been Warned !). From the plaza before entering the towen there are amazing views of the four spirits of the sky, NOT TO BE MISSED. A fairly steep staircase, just to the right of the town entrance leads to the ruins of the old Fort / Acropolis. The town itself is very nice, pleasant alleys to wander around with plenty of shops, restaurants and lots of amazing Photo Ops for any Photo Lover.

Easy climb from the village with excellent views
Oct 2019
Having stayed just below the village centre we explored all local places during our two week holiday. Well worth the climb to the castle ruins during the day or at night when the area is illuminated. Great views all around to include the 'smoking' Mount Etna.

Must see, great views, charming town!
Oct 2019
This is a must see town when visiting the Taormina area--just a few minutes away from the city center. The town is very charming, has views to be admired, and offers nice restaurants and shops. I wish I could have spent more time. Getting there is easy by City bus or taxi.

Great views

Nice square, great views... enjoyed with a cold beer! It's a small area at the top of the hill, but worth a short visit.
