Took the early morning tour in marginal weather but worth every minute. The scenery is amazing, a wide variety of birds spotted and we got a better understanding of the habitat. This is an amazing estuary to explore. Highly recommended.

We visited Okarito with friends from Belgium and spent the night in a comfortable holiday home right on the beach. The morning was spent cruising the lagoon looking at a wide variety of bird life, Swade our tour guide was so knowledgeable he made it a special experience. We took the Eco tour, a good length of time to be... More

On our trip on the lagoon we managed to see about nine different wading birds including the White Heron. A very peaceful and special place.

We arrived at the wharf on a beautiful clear morning which was lucky as we had booked the trip weeks earlier. There was enough room on our particular trip to cater for walk up visitors but this could be a risky strategy. We had an amazing 2 hours with terrific reflections and views of the alps with Mt Tasman and... More

The Okarito Lagoon is a special place with pied shags, blue ducks, and especially the New Zealand white heron's nesting grounds. We were told there are only around 150 white herons left which means we saw 5% of the population on our boat tour! The skipper is low key but extremely knowledgeable about the natural and geophysical history of the... More

Get to see the white herons nesting in the trees and other birdlife such as spoonbills. Bring some insect repellent.

All the birds that should have been there were there though the quantities of some were disappointing e,g. a single Banded Dotterel. But with Black-billed Gull and a Black Shag to add to the White Heron, Spoonbill, both types of Oystercatcher, Southern Black-back Gull, White-faced Heron and Welcome Swallow the variety of species was good. The rain had postponed my... More

We really enjoyed the cruise around the wetlands. It was quite still and the mixture of clouds and sun brought out amazing reflections off the water. We are not really bird watchers but enjoyed viewing the birdlife on the water and saw a number of white herons, some quite close.

We stayed in Okarito and went out for the early morning boat tour. Since the tide was still low, there were lots of birds on the mudflats. Our guide was extremely knowledgable and guided us to see many different species. There are so many different birds, they give you a little checklist so you can tick them off.
