Beautiful monument in the promenade

Monento a Evaristo Churruca is a monument dedicated to thid engineer, who built the outside part of the Harbor of Bilbao. It is located in the promenade of Getxo, a little town near Bilbao, in the North part of Iberian Peninsula. You can see the monument, when you walk around the coast, on the promenade, very near the Puente de Vizcaya. Interesting to learn about the history of this city and his harbour.

An unsung hero

This personage is not that particularly important to Spain other than that he oversaw the construction of the exterior port in the city of Bilbao in the early 1900´s which brought him to kings attention and he was named count in 1908. This is a title he enjoyed until 1913 when he died. The biggest advantage of this monument is that it is close to the hanging bridge. So why not?

Certainly impressive

This large monument is located on the harbour peninsula just along from Vizcaya hanging bridge and certainly catches the eye. To be honest it’s rather “over the top” in both design and structure, especially when you consider it’s dedicated to a chap who was Bilbao Head of Board of Work’s back in the day and not some war hero as you might expect (although there is mention on an information panel that a relative died heroically captaining his ship at the Battle of Trafalgar!). Guess it’s typical of a Franco era style of monument and the type all Dictators seem to admire - certainly not minimalistic or understated! Information panels handily give information in English and there’s a nice promenade on the far side along the harbour breakwater.

Not particularly interesting. The view deserves the walk

Monument without significant relevance, but located in a nice and pleasant promenade, 300 m away of the Bridge of Bizkaia (Puente de Bizkaia).
Definitely, I would recommend going for a stroll from the Puente de Bizkaia, searching for the views of the seashore and the mouth of the River Nervión (the so-called "La Ria"), not for the monument. The roundtrip walk takes 30 min

Paseo agradable y recomendable desde el Puente Colgante. Perfectamente acondicionado para todas las edades

Slightly overblown monument to an engineer
Nov 2017 • Solo
The Monumento Evaristo de Churruca commemorates the engineer responsible for turning Bilbao into a major seaport. Essentially it's a large pillar with weathered (verdigris) copper statues around the base, including one of a man holding back the sea. While not of great artistic merit, it's typical of its era (1939, soon after Franco came to power), and there's a reasonably interesting information board provided by the local council, at the west end of series of such boards explaining the history of the town of Getxo. These are worth following for a pleasant enough walk; perhaps justifying crossing over the river by the nearly transporter bridge (Puente Colgante). Further on along the seafront, Getxo has some interesting buildings built by wealthy Bilbao residents in the pre-Franco era.
