You cannot miss this tower - it's right in the middle of the main pedestrian street of Vipiteno - it dominates the city center and it's the most iconic city landmarkh.
Built in the 15th century, it's 46 meters high. The original spire was destroyed by fire in 1867 and it was replaced with the current angular roof.
The tower itself can be visited only on specific occasions - normally you just have the outside view.

Torre delle Dodici or "Zwoelver Turm" is located at the head of Via Citta Nuova. Exactly at 12 Noon every day, the ageless tower strikes 12... and alerts everybody it's lunchtime or "Mahlzeit!" The tower has been around for 5 centuries, but the old clock tower was rebuilt... relatively recently, in the late 1800s.
The clock is more or less the centerpiece of New City or Citta Nuova... the main/shopping district of Vipiteno (aka Sterzing). Along the main pedestrian way leading to the tower, you will find a variety of quaint shops, outdoor cafes, hotels and restaurants. We spent 5 hours walking, browsing, shopping and dining in Citta Nuova. In the center of the via is a beer garden and open-air market. If you wish to sample genuine Alto Adigen specialties, this is the place to be. The various shops and restaurants are upscale, but not too pricey. You will be able to find filling menu of the day meals for 10 - 11 Euros. Stick around until noon, and you will be treated to the melody of "Zwoelver." I highly recommend a morning or afternoon taking in the sights at Torre delle Dodici.

If you're driving from Bolzano to points north as we were, then Vipiteno makes a great coffee stop. Easy parking and lovely, quaint main street with a pretty tower at the end.

This old city tower dates back to the 15th century and was modified after being burned down in 1867.
It's definitely the landmark of Sterzing-Vipeteno and separates the old and the newer part of the city.
It seems that visiting the tower is possible during special events in Summer, buit we didn't have the luck to go up.

The Tower of the Twelve is practically the symbol of Vipiteno and divides the old city from the new city.

Village included among the most beautiful in Italy. It is worth stopping to visit the place especially if you are passing through the border with Austria.

The twelve o'clock tower represents the symbol of Vipiteno. Particular mention concerns both the clock/meridian, fully functional and connected to the bell system that rings twelve in a harmonious manner, and the portico at the foot of it which allows the access road to the historic city center to pass.

The climb is quite challenging: narrow staircase, rocks on the walls, imperfect steps and... be careful not to hit your head!!! The prisoner cells are really cramped. Once you reach the top the sight is truly breathtaking. The bell makes us feel small....

Symbol of Vipiteno, the 12 o'clock tower is the first thing you notice when you arrive in the centre.
It divides the old part from the new one and there is the possibility of climbing up to the top.
The ticket costs €4 and once you get there you can see Vipiteno from all its angles.
It's nice to go up when the bells ring, but watch your ears because it's very loud!
Not recommended for those who suffer from claustrophobia or vertigo, the stairs are steep and narrow!
