There is a choice of Tourist Ger Camps available near here. The flaming cliffs are worth a visit and from this strange and wonderful place where dinosaur bones can be found views to the surrounding desert steppe are wide ranging. The Saxaul Forest is rather reduced in size now. It comprises ancient small trees with deep root systems that enables them to survive the desert conditions

You can enjoy riding in the sand dunes in the morning before we are setting off to the breathtaking Flaming cliffs, where many important dinosaur fossils and eggs been found. Be prepared to see one of the most spectacular sunsets and sunrises Mongolia has to offer. We will sleep at the Gobi Oasis 2 ger camp, only 10min ride away from the cliffs.

The surrounding landscape is beautiful but the overall site is relatively small. The saxual "forest" is a small patch of uniquely desert trees somewhat endangered in the Gobi by nomadic families cutting them down for firewood and poachers digging at the roots for a growth (think truffle) in high demand in China. The forest is not much by itself but packaged with the rest of the sight worth a couple minutes to better understand the plant ecology of the Gobi.

Saxual is essentially the only tree that is well-adapted to survival and growth in the harsh central Asian desert conditions. Thanks to deep roots and physiological adaptations that prevent water loss and efficient use of water, the tree occurs across wide expanses of the desert. The unique twisted forms of the tree make for interesting viewing and cool photographs. Nice to get relief from the mid-day sun under the sparse shade as well.

An unusual set of trees with odd, twisted and bent shapes. It's not very large or dense, but presents unique photography opportunities if you go there when the light is appropriate. We stayed in a Ger camp nearby and walked to this place at sunset. Worth the trip if convenient.

I was surprised to discover it was called a forest as there is not a density of trees however, the trees themselves are interesting and photogenic because of their shape. The trees are salt resistant, drought resistant, stunted and have very deep roots. because of these factors they are planted to reclaim areas to fix the soil and prevent erosion and the sand taking over the land. The thick bark stores water and the Nomads also use the wood for heating and cooking as the wood is slow burning and extremely hot.
