This is real Austria, hidden away but well worth tracking down if you are in the St Wolfgang area. The Wolfgangsee is wonderful and is the most popular lake in the area but Schwarensee is only 2 km away and is very different. About 5km around the whole lake on a footpath full of wonderful views. There are only two small cafes around the lake and oddly both next to each other. It's traffic free and gives you a view of real Austria.

Took our grandchildren and drove up to this secluded and pictures lake. Had good time on the stony shore sunbathing and even dared into the lake for a swim. Concluded the outing with lunch at a restaurant at the lake with typical Austrian cuisine and then the children together with their parents and grandmother hiked back sedately to our lodging and had still energy to run around and use the trampoline...

Visited in January 2018. Unfortunately the weather was grey and overcast with rain and restricted our experience. However I could see that on a better day the area would be very beautiful with a lot to do.

We visited in December. All the restaurants were shut. And the lake is a bit bleak when compared to Wolfgangsee. We walked from St Wolfgang and then took the route down via the Wiresteige to Strobl, which if my German had been up to it would have warned us, it was a bit scary. Very narrow path, with a wire hand rail to keep you from falling down the vertical drop to the stream below. Lots of metal stairs, a bit wobbly in places. But an experience not to be missed. All power to the people who put the rail in place, not a job for the faint hearted.

Great views, easy walk, close parking place.

You can get to the place with your car, don't rush to park in the upper parking place.

This walk around the Schwarzensee is an easy one, even for our children (6 and 7). You can have a drink at the restaurant there (wirtshaus zur lore), we even had lunch there but it was not so special.

after gosausee, this is one of the most beautiful lakes to visit in the area.. a little difficult to find but worth the drive (too lazy to hike there!) there is a charge at the car park of 2€ and they have installed a machine there which will ony accept the exact amount.
lovely 1 hour walk around the lake and you can actually go further and down to attersee if you are feeling energetic. good little restaurants for a refreshing cup of coffee or tea. the walk on the southeastern side is through the trees, whilst the northwestern side is open.

Hiked to Schwarzensee from St. Wolfgang and then down to Strobl. About a 10 mile route. The route up and down from the lake is fairly steep, but the ascent is pretty short (1/2-3/4 mile). The lake is beautiful, surrounded by mountains. There was a lakeside restaurant with a beer garden. We didn't eat there, but it would be a nice setting for a meal. Hike down to Strobl took us through a gorge and around the bottom of Wolfgangsee near Strobl. This was one of the more beautiful lakeside trails in the area.
