- me25 contributionsWinter walk beats summer crowdsOur second attempt to walk to the glacier, the first was to much blizzard. A bit slipped but amazing snowy scenes and no other people. The blue glacier and landscape was perfect and we were accompanied by a tiny wren.Visited January 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 7, 2023
- Jonathan THope, Indiana378 contributionsAs Good As It GetsWhat an incredible hike with a tremendous payoff at the end. The early trail up is a bit challenging, but the second half flattens out and is relatively easy. We have hiked all over the world and this is now a favorite. IF you have ever done the Mist Trail at Yosemite, this may seem familiar. Expect to get a "shower".Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 16, 2023
- aspoe093Pierre, South Dakota621 contributionsAmazingWhat an amazing glacier and view. The hike was great and seeing the waterfall rushing was great. I would suggest you hike the whole way and not take the ride. Pretty simple hike to an amazing viewVisited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 23, 2023
- manxseasiderRamsey, United Kingdom354 contributionsBeautiful destination, poor organisation from Celebrity CruisesThis is a spectacular location and the walk up to the glacier is not too steep and therefore accessible to most people. The water coming down the valley from the glacier takes the form of a cascading torrent at times which produces clouds of mist and rainbows in the sunshine where it is crossed by bridges. Allow yourself a good 2 hours to stroll to the glacier and back. Unfortunately we were rushed more than we would have liked with a late start due to inadequate number of tenders from our ship by Celebrity. This resulted in a stressful and, for some, distressing pressure of time to this beautiful destination. With the very reduced itinerary time for this tour everything was rushed and the walk to the glacier had to be conducted with haste as a route march rather than a more leisurely and enjoyable stroll to such an enjoyable destination. However, as this was entirely the responsibility of Celebrity and not the fault of the tour organiser (who made a valiant effort to make up some of the lost time) I feel I can’t mark down the attraction based on the inefficiency of the cruise ship company. 5 stars for Briksdal glacier and 2 stars for Celebrity.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 26, 2023
- JenC_UK261 contributionsWell worth the visitWe took the excursion organised by Princess Cruises as there were two cruise ships in Olden that day and we wanted a guaranteed place on a bus to the glacier. It was very well-organised, and the commentary on the coach was very good. The views from the coach were stunning, and we had a photo stop on the way out and on return. Sit on the right hand side of the coach to view the lake and waterfalls. The walk up to the glacier was absolutely fine for us but definitely recommend wearing sturdy trainers or walking boots. We had plenty of time to stop and admire the view and take photos. The cakes and drinks included in the cafe afterwards were delicious and we went back for seconds. They cut the cakes into small portions so you can try each type. Nice gift shop and clean toilets too. We didn’t have any worries at all about getting back to the ship in time so for us it was worth paying the extra money to book via Princess. The fantastic commentary on the coach and additional stops also made it for us. My teenagers said it was the best port day of the cruise.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 25, 2023
- Warmhiker13 contributionsSo worth the trip! Be prepared for crowds, but still enjoyable. We bought tickets for the glacier shuttle through Olden Cruise Adventures. The bus picked us up promptly at 9:30am with a return at 12:30pm. Note, there's 2 docks that a cruise ship can pull into. Luckily, we were at the one next to the Loen skylift, which is where they picked up. The ships' coaches left before us, but we did save a bit booking with Olden Adventures. The trip from the parking to the glacier was about 30-40 mins. The scenery on the drive was absolutely breathtaking. This is what we thought Norway would look like - waterfalls, blue water, awesome people. Once at the glacier, be prepared for crowds. The earlier the better to get there. It's a gentle 30 -40 min walk to the glacier with stunning views along the way. Someone said the glacier was gone. Nope, it's still there, just retreated. Once back at the drop off, we didn't have enough time to do the Loen Skylift. If you want to do both, do this one first, then the glacier. The crowds were crazy long by the time we returned with even 2 hrs to spare.Visited August 2023Traveled with friendsWritten September 6, 2023
- Mary F23 contributionsStunning Scenery and GlacierAlthough I visited the glacier on a rainy day, it was well worth the hike. The glacier and surrounding areas are spectacular. I walked up and back on the glacier trail (about 3 km. each way) but there is also a jeep ride for those less inclined to hike. The trail going up is a little steep with some rocks that needed to be climbed over and a bridge over rushing water which is wet and a bit slippery. I would recommend a raincoat or a rain poncho since, even on a nice day, the rushing water shoots up into the air along certain parts of the trail.Visited August 2023Traveled soloWritten September 14, 2023

We visited on an optional excursion from our MSC cruise. The trip was so well organised and the walk up to the glacier, although tiring and very wet if you don't avoid the gushing torrents from the waterfall half way up, was well worth the 45 minute effort to get there. Few sights can beat this and we will have this in our memory banks forever more. However you choose to get there, whether on foot or by optional truck (there is a charge for this), you will not regret it. - Love To TravelShropshire, United Kingdom412 contributionsA great experienceThe trail to reach the glacier is around 2.5Kms and overall is around a 200m altitude gain. It took us 50 minutes, they say depending on your fitness level it can take between 40-60 minutes to get there. There are buggies available for those less able. (not sure if you have to pay) The ground is NOT FLAT or smooth, there are many steps, some are steps and some are rocks. You have to walk past a HUGE waterfall and you WILL GET WET, however once you are there its worth it and its all downhill on the way back!!!! There is a cafe at the centre which sells lovely panini's and toasties and a shopVisited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 13, 2023

Was on a cruise in Norway and this was one of our activity's, once you get to the site it is a long walk up to the glacier, wouldn't advise if you are not fit and able. Really good experience for our family. Gift shop and toilets at the bottom none at the top,

While docked in Olden, we took the bus to the Briksdal glacier about 15 miles inland. We opted to hike the 1.6 miles through a trail up hill in rainy, windy conditions. They have what is known as troll vehicles to haul you up and return, but they were pricy. Even with the difficult conditions we made it up in 50 minutes and saw the largest glacier in Europe and deep with majestic mountains and pretty waterfalls. Up top are a restaurant and gift store for perusing. Lungs didnt hurt as much hiking back down, but we were all soaked! Lots of mall souvenir shops by the port.

The Briksdal glacier is something not to be missed, yes it's a bit of an up hill walk, but definitely worth it.

We booked to visit here independently through Olden Adventures in the UK before coming away on our cruise. Olden Adventures did change the time of our tour from 11 until 12 but kept us informed along the way. We picked the bus up in Olden but also can be by the port. It starts with a very informative scenic bus trip up to near where the glacier is. The coaches park here and wait. Once here you are assigned a time to wait for your troll car to take you up to near the glacier. The troll cars seat 7 plus the driver and it is a fun drive up. You drive near the waterfall on your way up so can get a little wet. Although there is a cover to go over your knees. Once at the top there is about a 15/20 minute walk up to the lake/glacier. It's a little steep. It really is beautiful and well worth the walk. The time here is limited and you are given times that you need to be back to the coach park for. Personally I wish we had had a little longer. I really wanted to walk back down as the scenery was lovely and it was a beautiful day on our visit but time didn't allow unfortunately.

Our bus from Olden dropped us at the visitors center/gift shop area and we hiked (really walked) the 5km or so to the lake at the bottom of the glacier. Really, the glacier has receded significantly over the past few hundred years but it is still stunningly beautiful. It was nice to see so many people enjoying nature like that.
To my knowledge, the hiking (access to the trails) was actually free. People with mobility issues, people can book "troll cars" which are essentially all-terrain golf cart like things.

This hike was about 5km in total. Was easy enough to do but what I loved about this is how scenic the hike is; it’s stunning and when you get to the glacier that’s just beautiful.
Well worth the hike.

Hello I was looking at doing the walk with my dad but he is in a wheel chair - anybody who has been can you tell me what the surface of the path is? I don’t mind about the incline I can get him up there if the wheels will be able to move along the surface. I was looking at troll cars but think they are all booked up unless I can book them on the day. He can get out to do steps if it’s just a few it’s just distance he can’t do. Thanks

I wouldn’t recommend attempting this in a wheelchair. Stony, gravelly and with steps and steep sections. The coach journey there had wonderful views of the lake and waterfalls so see if there is one of those available. We sat on the right hand side and had great views.

Ciao, si può raggiungere il ghiacciaio da Olden con l’autobus ? Le troll car devono essere prenotate online o si trovano sempre? Ricordi il costo? Grazie

Is there anywhere to sit where the troll cars drop you off? Due to mobility, my mum wouldn’t be able to walk the last bit to the glacier so need to know if there would be somewhere she could sit whilst we walked the last bit. Thank you.

We are planning to visit Briksdal Glacier in April next year, seeing the walk takes around 45 minutes each way probably more like 55 minutes as we are quite slow... we won’t have long at the glacier so we’re thinking troll car up and walk down.
But when I google it, it says the troll cars are 1.5 hour round trip so still 45 minute each way plus the 10 minute walk up to the glacier from the troll base still leaves us with barely 5-10 minutes at the glacier. Unfortunately most tours only offer 2 hours to do this.
Surely the cars don’t take 45 minutes the same as walking? Had anybody been on them that can confirm this? Thankyou.

The troll cars make a few stops I think and that is the reason why it takes some time. If that is 45 minutes I doubt. But why should it leave you just a short while on the glacier itself? As far as I can tell, you are free to stay there as long as you want.
