If you enjoy visiting historic buildings and castles in particular, Chillon is an absolute jewel. Easily accessible by train, it's one of the finest examples of medieval architecture to be found anywhere with intact battlements, five large furnished halls, numerous smaller rooms, cellars, turrets, several restored courtyards, and views of the Alps across the lake unchanged by any modern developments. You could breeze through the whole building in an hour if you're in a hurry, but it's definitely worth paying a few extra francs for the audioguide and staying for two hours for the full experience. Also, they bottle and sell their own wine - 10/10 would recommend

Really enjoyable and interesting visit. There is so much to see, the trip was laid out really well and very informative. Lots of people but it didn’t feel crowded and the surroundings are spectacular. Recommend the walk along the lakeside from Montreux to the castle, it’s about 45 minutes but all flat and so scenic and the view of the castle from the lakeside is beautiful.

This castle is the most visited historical monument in Switzerland. There is an entrance fee with reduced rates for over 60’s and children. There are 42 rooms to explore and with Covid, there is a one-way system well marked with yellow arrows. You get given a pamphlet and you can pay to have the audio guide. Very interesting and very well maintained. There is also a shop on site. It is close to the station and bus stop. Definitely a place to visit if in Switzerland.

Chateau de Chillon is a must see if you are on Lake Geneva! It is very close to Montreux and easily accessed several different ways. We did not need to purchase tickets in advance and our Swiss Travel Pass gave us free access to the Castle.
Someone had mentioned an hour was long enough for the castle, this is not true. If you want to rent the audio headset, which I think would have been good, you need an hour and half.
The castle is huge and they had some areas decorated. I would totally do this castle again if ever in the area and take more time to see it!

We've visited tons of castles all over Europe and this one stands out as one of the nicest ones we've seen. Firstly the location between lake and mountains is just beautiful! The castle itself is very well preserved and you get to explore I think up to almost 40 or 50 different rooms at your own pace. The rooms are still very well preserved and have a very old medieval feel to it (unlike some more well-known castles where people flock to). We travelled with a small toddler so did not do a tour or audio guide. I think this would've been extra interesting, but there are written descriptions all over the rooms so that you can read some history at your own pace (quite important when travelling with kids). We were there in winter and it was really easy to find parking directly across the road (free for 3 hrs). I would strongly recommend a visit to this castle if you are in the area.

We have visited about the Chateau de Chillon about five times. Most recently last summer. Actually it might have been 2020. We have arrived by car (I seem to remember there isn’t much parking, by train (there’s a pretty walk along the lake), by boat (the boat stops just by the chateau), and we walked along the lakeside from Villeneuve. The building feels so complete you could practically move in tomorrow although, to be honest I would want a proper bathroom. That’s fairly amazing when you’ve been brought up on English castles which have mostly biodegraded into a small pile of stones or were shattered by Cromwell. Lots of painted walls, lots of little roofs, lots of lovely views. There’s a great shop selling fabulous posters, and a café.

We went during winter with our 2 kids (aged 8 and 12) and we all loved it. We spent hours exploring the whole castle. Highly recommend getting the audio guide to talk you through each section.
It's a very open castle in terms of being able to see all areas/rooms. We loved it so much we wanted to visit other castles (e.g. Schloss Thun) but being winter the others were closed.

A beautiful castle in a stunning setting. Make sure to wear warm clothes in the winter, because it isn't heated and it is cold in there. I wish fires were burning in the incredible banquet rooms.

Yes, island Chateau, despite the fact that from a distance it seems like being on shore, it is few met from it on a rocky island in Geneva lake. Because of that it had better protection during the medieval times, and those days there was a drawing bridge to access it.
We were even hesitating if to visit it as last November we did a big Loire tour visiting 8 Chateaus. What a mistake it would be we did not - amazing setting, nice inner courtyards and well preserved rooms and turrets.

Whether or not you’re a lover of history, a visit to this castle is magical. Pay for the audio guide (definitely worthwhile) and spend many wonderful hours enjoying the rich history of the castle.

When your visit is over, head to nearby Montreux for lunch and then visit the Queen (yes, the rock group) museum - a different experience but also one not to be missed! The combination makes for a fantastic day trip.
