This was a spontaneous and very interesting trip .Sadly we didn’t see any animals on our hike to and from the falls . The hike itself is 2.5km on a steep rocky terrain one way , so one has to be physically fit and healthy for the hike is no joke. The guides were super friendly and informative. There are two slots for the tours to the falls at 10 am sharp and at 2 pm sharp respectively. Do carry a swim suit and enough water and food for your trip and it’s best advice to have walking closed shoes and a back pack ..

We visited this place in the August 2019 when the weather was very good and no rains. The route to the waterfalls is done by walking 2-3 kilometers in a unique path inside the park. There is always a well trained ranger of the park leading you all the time and protecting in case of anything needed. It a very nice experience for those who like walking in rough terrains inside the forests.

Just 30 minutes walk to the pretty Sheldrik Falls where you can have dip in the water. Uphill was a bit more of a climb but definitely worth it.

In December my husband and I visited Sheldrick Falls as an included activity in a Safari we booked. It was the first thing we did on the safari trip after being picked up at our hotel actually.

We arrived at the start of the hike for 10am. There were toilets here - though they didn't seem to be flushing at the time of our visit so they were a bit...full.

This walk must be done with accompanying park rangers. Our group was about 20 people. Before we left we were warned we need to be in good physical condition, but other than that not a lot of info was given as to the terrain etc. The hike is 2.5k there and 2.5k back. I'm not in the best shape, but having done many other hikes of longer distances I assumed I'd be alright. Oh how wrong I was.

Setting off you start out on a paved path that zig zags down the hill, alternating between flat pathway and stairs. Eventually you are spit on to a dirt path which is quite steep. At first the path is fine, however where there has been rain, the middle of it has washed away creating 'canyons' in the path which get quite wide in places, making keeping your footing tricky.

Eventually the path flattens out as you make your way into the trees. This part of it is shaded well and not too bad, however eventually you come to a river. Previously it had a bridge, but this is gone and you now need to remove your shoes and socks to cross the water. On the other side is a steep bank with some stones embedded in it that you're meant to climb up to get back to the path. These are tricky to navigate, especially as you're trying to get your shoes and socks back on. From there it's another 600m to the falls.

The falls themselves weren't that stunning, at least for me. Being from Canada I've seen my fair share of waterfalls and these were on par with what I could have found a few hundred meters from my house! I suppose I am spoiled by where I am from though as others were quite pleased. It started to rain whilst we were there, which was nice as it was a pretty hot day and we were all bit warm and sweaty! However that rain would turn out to be a bit of a curse later!

As we made our way back to the path, it was very slippery. it wasn't long before my foot caught a bit of mud and I managed to fall on my butt! I wasn't hurt but my pride was a bit shot! However that wouldn't be the worst of it. We made it back to the river where we needed to take our shoes off again and cross. As I climbed back down those stones in the bank it was horribly slippery. The two accompanying rangers were trying to act as handrails for all of us, but even with their help I managed to go flying! I was absolutely covered in mud.

Having crossed the river, the fall left me with so much adrenaline that my hands were shaking and I couldn't get my shoes back on. Thank god for a lovely woman and one of the rangers who helped me out. It was again one of those pride wounding moments as that helpful, I think Spanish, woman put my socks on my feet for me, and then my shoes. I couldn't do anything but stand there trembling.

From there I didn't fall again! Thankfully, However others did.

Back through the trees things were okay, but then we hit the hill with the path with the canyon in the middle and climbing was a long, difficult process. It was tough to ascertain when the dirt was firm or going to give under your foot from the rain.

Coming down, the hill had seemed steep, but not terribly. Going back, however, you realize just how steep it was. I gave up trying to keep up with the main group. Myself, another couple of guests, and the park ranger who was keeping the rear, took the last 1k slowly. By this time the rain had gone and the sun was hot. It was a long, painful climb but we did all make it back up!

When I go to the top I didn't really feel that reward for having accomplished something difficult. It was more an annoyance I ever had to bother in the first place! Looking back I wish I had stayed with the tour guide at the top instead of going at all. But at least I can say I did it, and it's a funny story to tell now!

The two park rangers who took us all down were wonderful. Very lovely men who were kind and helpful to all of us. They deserve much praise.

So if you are heading to Sheldrick Falls, heed this warning. It is not easy! Not going down or coming back up. 5k feels like 10 and if you're at all unsteady on your feet or a bit out of shape, you probably want to skip it! If you do go, wear good sturdy shoes which are easy to take on and off. Bring water with you. And sunscreen!

Sheldricks waterfall hike is a very different thing to do in the area. The hike is quite easy with just a short steep ascent on the way back up. When you get to the bottom you are surprised with a beautiful cascading fall surrounded by tropical nature. To arrange this hike you need to get to the Shimba Hills National reserve main gate before 10am where an armed guide will escort you to the falls. The guard is necessary as there are elephants in the reserve and are quite dangerous if they are caught unawares.

The Experience was amazing. A fun activity ,if you are looking for an experience in the wilderness. Carry enough food and water to last you a day though. You will certainly need it. And ensure to wear comfortable clothings, especially if you visit during a sunny weather.

We were at Shimba hills and chose this 2 hour trip after a short game drive. It is about a 2.5 km trek each way, and the uphill can get a little tough but not too much that it would deter anyone. A fair level of fitness is required.
The waterfall is not massive but just the right kind to enjoy standing under them, stay in the pool for a while and feel thoroughly satisfied with the experience.
Advise to carry a bottle of water and a mild snack for the energy boost needed on the climb up.
