...but a pleasant stroll to stretch the legs after a car ride. public parking is limited, and is next to the huge private parking lot for Pedras Mar resort. we stayed at the resort, so we strolled to swimming hole. some folks mountain biked along part of the coastal trail; risky but very cool, and not sure that'd be great idea when it's busy in summertime

Located on the Costa das Quatro Ribeiras, this natural water park, with its sculpted walkways, huge chunks of lava rock, multiple platform levels and even a water wheel, is one of the best in Terceira. It’s really only used for swimming during the warmer months of May - September, but you can visit anytime. In season, they even have a bus turning circle in the car park area up top for local public access. Park your vehicle and walk down about 50 well maintained steps to the first level, where a salt water pool has been constructed. The scenery here is spectacular - cliffs, lava rocks & crashing waves await your camera. Besides the man-made pool, several natural pools of calm water are available, protected by breakwater boulders. Lots of space has been set aside for sunbathers too. The free attraction is perfect for the entire family. Washrooms are on site. Even if you don’t swim, the multiple levels and steps make this a fun place to explore. As a caution, some of the rock surfaces can be very slippery and there may be remnants of handrail fasteners protruding from steps used to enter the water. Watch your step. For a scenic birds eye view of the Piscina of Quatro Ribeitas and the entire coastline visit the Miradouro das Quatro Ribeiras (scenic lookout) just down the road at the next exit. Look for the signs ‘Zona Balnear’ and ‘Miradouro’and follow the road in. Enjoy the breathtaking view!

We went in January, so there was no swimming, but... oh my... the waves! What a show. Could watch for hours. Definitely worth the stop.

Be sure to follow the brown signs with binoculars to find 4 Ribeiras. It is easy to miss. Absolutely beautiful area, you need to walk down some stairs, but it is worth with it. All the pools and crossovers are amazing. We haven't been there when the pool was open, but the natural pools are beautiful.

I love the he ocean water, the salty taste it leaves on my lips, the salty smell on my skin. Its natural, its pure. It brings good health, its a great place for swimming.

The small village of Quatro Ribeiras at the Northern Coast of Terceira has what truly can be called a hidden gem. And it is hidden, indeed. There is only a small sign on the country road that points to this “area balnear”, and when you arrive there, at a small parking lot you see nothing spectacular. You then climb down the stairs and towards the bottom you pass an old mill. Then, you suddenly see an area of lava rocks with some natural pools, some concrete platforms and equipped with stainless steel ladders to climb into the water. Also, they built a swimming pool right there, which is fed by sea water. The water is sparkling clean. There were lifeguards on duty and only a few people swimming in the sparkling clean water. On one of the rocks they built a little outlook with a magnificent view. This is a place to rest and to relax.

We first visited this park/natural pool area several months ago, when it was considered ‘out-of-season’. We found ourselves alone in a wonderland of beautiful sights and sounds. The featured attraction was the ocean itself, but the partnership with man has made this place very special. Along with a working mini water mill (when the rain is creating a water flow to power it), the carefully constructed walkways around water filled pools makes your visit an adventure. There is even a separate full-sized salt water swimming pool for the who prefer a more customary sedate swimming experience. We had high winds on our recent visit and nature put on quite a show for us. Nobody was swimming (April is still considered too cool) but the aggressive ocean waves made the free show totally amazing. Workers were there, renovating, repairing and painting to prepare for the many locals and tourists who would soon ‘re-discover’ this gem. To access you need to descend quite a few steps, but the stair case is cemented and has railings. As for popularity, the reserved bus parking spots up top says it all!

The waves crashing on the lava! The aqua blue and white of the ocean against the black! Breathtaking. The water is warm and gorgeous. We did not get to swim as we visited in January but it was worth going to see what this is all about. Please make it a stop on your journey.

Pretty and rocky beach with big waves probably due to the winter weather. No one was around when we stopped by. Too cold to swim today.
