I took a train from the north to Kaohsiung and then a boat to Liuqiu. It took nearly five hours, but the moment I boarded the boat with the sea breeze blowing through my hair, my fatigue suddenly disappeared.
As soon as I arrived in Liuqiu, I left my luggage at the inn and rushed to the beach. In the afternoon, I went to the intertidal zone. There was a guide showing us around and leading us to explore the beauty of intertidal zone. This was the first time that I have personally touched sea cucumbers and sea urchins. Which is very novel to me. The most impressive thing for the first night I stayed in Liuqiu was the night view. The stars were very clear and the night was quiet.
Although I didn't go to many scenic spots, this trip in Liuqiu made me feel very fulfilled and relaxed.

Xiao liu qiu is a beautiful island which is easy to reach from Kaohsiung. The water is warm and crystal clear all year round and perfect for swimming.
once you reach the island you need to rent a bike to go around the island. It is a pretty small island so one day trip is enough. The first bus leaves at around 6 am.
I have been to xiao liu qiu twice. The best beach is Gebawan beach. However, the beach was closed when we went the second time (2nd May, 2020). We found another beach near the ferry terminal which was pretty nice. we saw some sea turtles without having to swim too far into the sea.

Xiaoliuqiu is located off the coast of Pingtung, Taiwan,Xiaoliuqiu is easier to reach than Green Island and Lanyuby train and ship.
Because it's located in southern Taiwan, it doesn't rain often. The weather was very clear at that time.
Xiaoliuqiu is a small island, so we do n’t need to spend a lot of time to get around the island.
The landscape in Xiaoliuqiu is very beautiful, The sea is very blue and clear so you can see many Coral reef easier.

This island is old and rustic, not for anyone who uses master/visa card, for anyone who does not ride motor cycle, for anyone who enjoys luxurious hotels and nice long beaches.

I initially intended to spend 3 nights here but had to shorten it as it was totally not what I expected. Totally inconvenient if you do not like riding motor cycle or if you were looking for nice resort with nice beaches or nice pool. The whole island is like a village place.
Before you go, please make sure you understand this.

This may be a “one horse” town/island but it is infested with sea turtles and other exotic marine life. In 48 hours we saw around 30 turtles in two, 1 hour snorkelling sessions going out from the shack opposite Vase Rock just outside the harbour wall. The shack is basic, but has everything that you need for a great family adventure, catering for my 5 year old (never snorkelled before) and being able to provide me with a 6’7” sunproof suit and U.K. size 12 reef boots. Safety was well attended to, and customer service was very good. You do need basic level of Chinese language skills.

Except for the ferry terminal area, town is quiet, but has sufficient facilities for basic eating, drinking and a 7-11 for other odds and ends.

Friends found other snorkelling spots that were “much better”. However, my son declared the snorkelling to be a major life event, in a good way :)

Xiao Liu Qiu can probably be named one of the most beautiful places in south Taiwan. The rock formation is excellent for photography and the coastal features are of great variety.

But don't go there during the weekend or during holidays because a LOT of people go there! It will take a long time to get on the ferry though the frequency will definitely increase. (I waited 1.5 hours in Xiao Liu Qiu to get back!) The little island does not have many eateries so one can imagine how chaotic the lunch time will be. So better pack your lunch. Also beware of the prices of the big restaurant at around the pier (also operator of the tour bus company), not to be ripped off.

Transport on the island is easy - scooters are best if you have a licence. Otherwise, buy a day ticket (not literally a ticket but they give you a sticker) from the bus company. Hop on and off at the scenic spots is convenient. They will remind you of the schedule of the buses. If one can spare two days and stay there for one night (of course not during the weekend), one can enjoy the peaceful life in this small island.

Going there for a day trip from Kaosiung is not difficult. Take a bus ride from the train station to Donggang. Ask for the direction to the pier to Xiao Liu Qiu and walk there in 15 minutes. When returning to Donggang after the trip, visit the seafood restaurants or stalls there. Very good value for money. Getting back to Kaosiung is not a problem, but don't be so late.

Xiaoliuqiu, Little Liuqiu or Lamay Island lies 15 km west of Donggang; it is Taiwan's only large coral island and we ended up spending 10 days here.

The island has an area of 6.8 square kilometres and you can cycle the 12k around it in an hour. That is if you don't want to: stop at any of the huge number of temples; or take walks through the cavernous coral rock caves and formations; or visit bamboo forests or ancient banyan trees; or enjoy snorkeling with the numerous green turtles amongst the colourful corals and myriad of fish.

We found a fabulous little room overlooking Yufu fishing harbour. At the weekends the island buzzes with scooters taking Taiwanese trippers to each attraction. The island is alive with tourists, the snorkeling spots heave with organised excited groups all roped together in unwieldily strings of snorkelers. During the week the island is quiet, peaceful and blissful and you can spend hours floating in the warm seas watching the kaleidoscope of colours, the fish and turtles that live just below the surface

Over the last few years we had almost given up on finding the type of good snorkeling chill-stay location that we so loved 35+ years ago. In the early eighties we found such locations all over the place but they have since been swallowed up by the shrinking world. In little Liuqiu we have found Nirvana. Thank goodness our cycle tour of Taiwan is not a 'mission' and we have time to pause here😀

Xiao Liu Qiu is easily accessed from the small fishing town of Dong Gang which is about 20K south of the main southern city of Kaohsiung, take a local bus from Kaohsiung main station for NT$75 or a shuttle taxi service for NT$150. Just go to the harbour (well signposted) and book a seat on the ferry (a 30 min ride). It is possible to rent scooters on the island right at the ferry terminal for NT$400 per day. The island has a couple of excellent beaches and some great snorkeling and excellent scuba diving, best vis for diving is in Autumn and Winter, with 3 wrecks and lots of Green turtles on every dive. The best dive shop to go to is Green Turtle Diving near the ferry harbour on the hill. Unfortunately I cannot recommend some of the other dive shops on the island. A couple of them do not have decent quality scuba gear to rent, and some of them have zero sense of environmental awareness. Some of the dive shops allow spear-fishing and collecting fish or lobsters, and DMs that encourage visitors to feed and handle fish. This is a very bad practice. Xiao Liu Qiu was once a naval training area and one side of the island was off-limits to civilian traffic thus creating, albeit inadvertently, a marine park of sorts. When this was lifted fishermen swarmed into the area and depleted the stocks. One thing you will see on the island are lots of Green Sea turtles. These can be easily seen while snorkeling or diving. IMO they should create a Marine park here and a no-take fishing zone. This would ensure that future generations would get to see the beauty underwater that the island once enjoyed in abundance. Of course there is a lot of delicious sea food available here but please note that much of the fish and squid or crab and lobsters available in the sea food restaurants are sourced from around the island, thus further depleting the already scarce supply of fish and contributing to denigration of the marine environment. Camp sites are available and there are heaps of small guest houses. Please note that weekends are very busy on the island and on National Holidays and long weekends the best accommodation on the island can be fully booked 4 weeks to 8 weeks in advance. Get to the ferry at least one hour before you plan to depart.

Xiao Liu Qiu is a beautiful coral island, easily accessible from Kaohsiung. For those who don't ride scooters, you can also hire a taxi for NT800, for the taxi to take you around the island. He will wait for you at the scenic spots. Went on a beautiful sunny day, saw several green sea turtles from various view points. Can snorkel even in January (water was warm), and snorkeling easily accessible from beach. Wish more education about protecting this unique ocean environment, like do not touch the corals (or take them!), do not fish (spear-fishing), do not feed the fish. Leave only your footprints, take only your memories.
Take Bus 9127 from Kaohsiung, can use iPass or EasyCard (which offer small discount). Take about one hour. Get off at Guanfu Road (tell driver you want to go to Xiao Liu Liu). Walk about 10-15 minutes to ferry terminal (ask people how to get there). Check ferry schedule--more boats are available on weekends. Do not buy tickets from first booth as you enter the ferry station. Instead, check all the ferry companies as to the next boat, then buy the ticket. Ferry takes 25 minutes. Lots of bike rentals available once you get there. Elderly lady and her son provided excellent service. 阿珠 0929-430438 or 0988-077592 (they only speak Chinese). They can also arrange lodging.

The island is small (you can walk around it in 4 hours; 12 km), with nice beaches, not too crowded (at least not in May). Rent a bike or scooter (otherwise there is a shuttle bus that runs around the island about every hour- 100 NTD all day ticket).
We did not get to snorkel so we missed out on the biggest attraction of the island- watching sea life, famous green turtle etc.

Ferry to the island: 410 NTD round trip- a boat every 2 or so hours, if you buy a return ticket (if you buy single journey ticket you can catch a boat every 40 or so minutes- different operators).

Bus from Kaoshiung to DongGang (9127)- takes off from a small bus station to the left from the Kaoushing Railway Station (in front of the railway station you will see a bus station- that's no the one you want; just head to the left along Anning St, and take first left (Tianjin St.), you will see something that looks more like a garage but this is the station you need); 200 NTD round trip; takes about 50 minutes one way. Stops in Dong Gang by 7/11, goes back from a stop on the opposite side of the road. Runs about every hour.
