Once again another one of the 8 churches on the UNESCO world heritage sites list ... it is once again a great place to see- however there are issues (opening hours are listed there ... however once again nobody was picking up the the phone- pity).
Again - form the XVIIth century with a distinct architectural style ... definitely worth seeing especially if you can find the custodian to open the church door.
A distinctive feature is the "half-moon" under the cross (legend says it is one of the reason the church was not burned down during the Tartars raid of 1717 - legend that is not endorsed by the Orthodox church - information from the custodian at Ieud - custodian at Poienile Izei was not to be found) - on site the "half-moon " is visible from a distance to catch it in a pic is difficult.
We could not get inside to check -out the paintings on the wooden walls - maybe next time.
So when you are in Maramures , go and check-out this church also, well worth it I would say.

The UNESCO World Heritage old church at Poienile Izei is rich in frescoes, it's in a beautiful setting, and it isn't difficult to get there.
The frescoes, all over the interior, cover three main areas: Old Testament scenes (Cain and Abel, Jacob's dream...), the Easter story (Calvary, the empty tomb...), and the last judgement, where the good will be saved through Christ's sacrifice, and sinners will get their deserts according to the sins they have committed (e.g. sleeping during a sermon).
(Most of the scenes are fairly easy to recognise, but for some a guide or guidebook may be necessary.)
Outside there's a convenient wooden bench along the front wall, from which you can admire the massive timbers in the church walls, and look down a grassy slope to the open-sided 'summer church', used for celebrations and festivities on sunny days.
We got there from the east, up the Iza valley, through haycock-dotted green fields, following the crystal clear, doubtless trout-filled river. The road isn't asphalted, but it's perfectly decent. The last fifty or a hundred yards are up a slight slope, and have to be done on foot. People with mobility problems might need a bit of help.
We weren't asked to pay, but we left a contribution by the altar in any case.

This is one of the 8 wooden church in Maramures County that is an UNESCO heritage from 1999. A few dozen meters was erected a stone church for religious services and this old church has entered a state of preservation. Is a little bit far from main roads, but if you came in Maramures for wooden church, this is a must see!

This wooden church is very nice from outside. Unfortunately, when we came there the church was closed (we were there on Saturday at 12:30, but it should be open until 13:00). We were calling the phone number written on the door, but nobody answered. So we could not see the interior.

This is one of the famous wooden churches of Maramures. The icons painted on interior walls are well preserved. There is a sign with a full description and history in several languages.

the church is closed almost all the time, and you have to call it to open or, if you do not know where to call, expect that ... the new church across the street was also closed with chain and lock, why? I did not understand. the Orthodox Church should have always been for the people, and especially given that it was known that the area is a tourist destination. I said that the church is greedy, because in this area all the entrances to all the churches are paid. I have never seen anything like it, and neither seems logical nor normal. It's a pity on the area that's gorgeous, but some people are messing up a lot.

The church is usually closed so you have to call if you want to visit. The person we called came after five min (be sure you call before 6pm). Very beautiful church and very nice location. Worth the visit
