Our guide at the Gooty fort suggested we make this slight detour of about 15 kms to get to Yerragudi and see the rock edicts of Ashoka. We did - and what a lovely surprise. Firstly the road was good, even when we got off the main road and headed thru the fields.
And the actual spot ..was incredibly pretty. Obviously someone who really cares is in overall charge of this place. A dead end, with not much space to turn the car, but as we walked up the path, we were surrounded by flowering plants in full bloom. As the steps went up, there was a mesh on eitherside with gorgeous flowering creepers. All this in the middle of the fields, in the middle of nowhere.
The actual rocks & edicts were well looked after. There is a railing around, and a 'cover' to prevent rain water flowing down the rock face over the text. Dating to about 269-231 BC, in Brahmi Script & Prakrit, the writings propagated 'Dharma'. Be obedient to parents & elders. Look after the environment. Be good to animals. The earliest environmental awareness advice !
A beautiful peaceful spot. Worth going to, if you are in the vicinity of Gooty fort.
