Not a lot of things to do, but beautiful weather is a nice respite from the cruise ship. Seems that the missionary presence has pretty much reduced cannibalism.

Quite grand on appearance walking up the humble dirt road walking towards this gem. A stone tiled square presents the arched wooden entry to the church. There are multiple intricate large wooden sculptures to enjoy inside the church which make it worth the trip. Highly recommend if visiting the island.

I found this Cathedral more by chance than design (not done enough homework on the island obviously) but found it incredibly spiritual. The carvings are quite beautiful as is the altar. It is a great place to give thanks for a safe passage across the Pacific. When I was there there were very few fellow cruise passengers so it was quite peaceful. Even at 70 I found the walk there easy although my companion, who has walking problems, had to forgo the experience. On another tack I found the welcome from the natives on arrival of our tender to be probably the best we had throughout the round the world voyage.

I visited Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas islands of French Polynesia as part of my cruise holiday with Oceania Cruises in February 2019 together with my Uncle. For your information, it took 2 days of cruising at sea to get to Nuku Hiva from Bora Bora, no kidding! The Marquesas are so far away from the Society islands of French Polynesia that not many tourists bother to come here.
After we arrived on shore, we walked from the tender pier all the way to the other end of the tarmac road in Taiohae, and back to the tender pier. We chanced upon this Cathedral along the way and went in to have a look. It was a serene place but I am sure it get very lively during Sunday Church congregations.
Near the tender jetty, I managed to purchase some souvenirs; a sea urchin & beads necklace for USD15 and 2 souvenir t-shirts for USD15 each, the cheapest t-shirts that I found in ALL OF FRENCH POLYNESIA!!! All the way out here in the Marquesas!!!
I must also say that if you want to swim at a beach in Taiohae, there is a yellow sand beach on the other side of the Tiki Tuhiva hill, where a huge statue of a warrior together with an ancient Polynesia God stands. By the way, the Tiki Tuhiva hill is definitely worth a visit for first-time visitors to Nuku Hiva, the scenery of the surrounding landscapes is SPECTACULAR from up here!!!

This cathedral is very "out of place" - not to be imagined on a South Pacific isle! It is a lovely large church not too far from the cruise docking area (possibly 15-minutes walk). The exterior is beautiful, but the interior is light, airy, and full of beautifully carved statues depicting all sorts of history. It is definitely worth the walk (even in the heat of day) to see what the islanders have built and decorated.

Seems that every island in all of French Polynesia has a "Notre Dame Cathedral." This one is typical -- interesting materials, traditional architecture, a graveyard, lots of cool tiki's. It is right near the marina/landing. We got here by Viking Ocean Cruises, yet there were many private boats that may have come from the mainland.
The whole of downtown is very small, without many amenities. We took, and recommend, a guided car trip across the island, where it it beautiful and lush -- quite unlike the harbor area.
If you are considering visiting Nuku Hiva (the main island in the Marquesas), note that it sits within a chilly current. You won't find anyone swimming there, except those with wet suits.

A peaceful respite from the heat and humidity. Beautiful woodwork at entrance to both church and church grounds. Inside church very open and clean. Locals discourage entering after rainstorm as it muddies the clean stone floors. Outside stone carvings and statue to Mary were touching.
Worth a visit for the architecture and setting.

The wood carvings inside the church are absolutely magnificent. Lots of skilled craftsmen made these. Churches within walking distance of the local pier if you are not on a tour.

We were lucky to be on the sailed over Mothers Day weekend. we were visiting the Tiki park along the water from in torrential rain when we heard angelic singing. We followed the sound to the Cathedral and listened to the whole service.
The singing was quite overwhelmingly beautiful and the locals welcomed us into the church. At the end of the service young girls handed flowers to all of the mothers.
A rare and fortunate experience.

Is this site an easy walk from the harbor? Is it part of a more comprehensive tour of the island or better on your own? We will be there on a cruise ship in November.

its about 10-15 minutes walk from the harbor. you can certainly do it by yourselves, and depending on the time you arrive you can also pass through the local market that has some nice handcraft stands
