The wood carvings inside the church are absolutely magnificent. Lots of skilled craftsmen made these. Churches within walking distance of the local pier if you are not on a tour.

we arrived just as the daily prayer began and we witnessed some of the loveliest singing by the people praying themselves. the church itself is interesting with some local motifs embedded like the 2 guardsman guarding the enterence

This cathedral is very "out of place" - not to be imagined on a South Pacific isle! It is a lovely large church not too far from the cruise docking area (possibly 15-minutes walk). The exterior is beautiful, but the interior is light, airy, and...More

This is a special spot of historical interest as well as spiritual interest. We were there as they were preparing for Palm Sunday services. Beautiful voices.

Located along the waterfront it is a modern and beautiful church, so unlike the traditional Polynesian churches and is well worth a short visit.

A short distance from the Nuku Hiva harbor is the Notre Dame Cathedral. Although this is a relatively new structure the surroundings are beautiful and the carvings inside are classic Marquean. Wheelchair accessible.

We were fortunate to meet a Frenchman willing to provide history of the church. Worth a stop by to see. Lovely grounds and setting for the Cathedral.

Do not miss this gem! It is a new church, built by Maquesan people. Light floods the place and illuminates the wooden figures that represent Christian saints with Marquesan faces, very impressive. Do not forget to admire the flower stones under the font. They are...More

its about 10-15 minutes walk from the harbor. you can certainly do it by yourselves, and depending on the time you arrive you can also pass through the local market that has some nice handcraft stands
