enjoy the view on its own, or as a capstone to the famous Serra Do Topo walk. Get a ride or park your car at the trail head at Serra Do Topo, and take the steep forest path down the cliffs to the inaccessible fajas on the north side. Make sure to stop at the waterfall on the way down!

When you reach the bottom, the path continues through several small towns on the coast, some of which have restaurants that serve simple meals. The footpath ends where it connects with Faja Dos Cubres.

There's a church there that's pretty active and a kiosk that serves drinks. We were able to meet a driver there to take us up the very steep road to the Miradoura and the main road.

The taxi drivers are keyed into the whole experience. With a little arranging ahead of time, you can have someone drop you at Serra Do Topo and they or a colleague will meet you at Senhora Lourdes Church at your estimated arrival time - usually about 4 or 5 hours.

The trail is a great experience for a group of any size, but it is long, and steep in some places. Small children might find this challenging. Once you're on the trail, there's no turn off or way to back track to the start. Finishing is really the only option.

Great views and a delightful new “mill” bathroom on the overlook before the Fajã. A must stop off before you enjoy the view!

If you want a spot to take amazing pictures, and enjoy what nature has created, this is one of the best sight seeing in São Jorge.

The number 1 walk in Sao Jorge. We left our car at Faja dos cubres. There is a little cafe and she will call a taxi for you to take you to Serra di Topa. (€17). The walk is well signposted all the way down. Good idea to take walking poles as it descends sharply for the first 2 hours. The views are amazing. The ground is slightly uneven, it’s a cattle path but easy to navigate. Once at the base you follow the coastal path to Santo Cristóbal and back to dos Cubres. You can get a detailed map of the walk from the tourist information in Vegas and probably other information points. It is walk 1. We took a picnic of Santa Catalina tuna ( an island speciality), bread, and speciales, which are delicious cakes. It took us 4 hours in total but we were not in a rush and stopped to eat en route.

So many marvelous miradouros in the Açores in general, and on São Jorge, you often get a view of the fajãs, or the ancient spillways of rocks that have cascaded from the mountain tops to create flat-ish pans of land along the sea. Calheta is a quaint town closer to the northwest end of the island, and makes for a nice point from which to explore.

Miradouro da Faja dos Cubres is another must-see view-place when you are travelling west-east on the *line* of Sao Jorge. Just relax - and enjoy the view into your mind - a camera does not justifie what your eyes catch. I've travelled to several islands in the east Atlantic and the Med and the only island I've had a different opinion is from el Hierro, Canary Islands - there the camera justified the views you had.You can ask me why -

The views were amazing from the vista points! Bring binoculars to give you a closer look from afar. Unfortunately, we were unable to hike down to Cubres but if you are able the locals told us it's worth the journey.

top spot to watch from afar two of the most charismatic Fajãs of the island, do not hesitate and use your lens for the lagoons on the Fajãs before going downhill on a narrow road amidst high cliffs

We pulled into this viewpoint (it is more of a pull in rather than an elaborate picnic area that we experienced in Sao Miguel) to take photographs of Faja dos Cubres and Faja da Caldeira de Santo Cristo. However, it is hard for the camera to do justice to this spectacular scenery. If you find that this first viewpoint is busy, then there is another further down the very windy road!
