I went on this river expecting to just spot some crocodiles little did I know how up close I would really see them . Jose and his colleague’s were amazing and fearless . They were very considerate and turned the boat so that everyone in the boat could see these beautiful animal up close . They are also very good engaging with tourist as well as locals making sure everyone understood him and was enjoying the tour . Jose himself is also a very entertaining man and extremely funny . We didn’t only see crocodiles but iguanas and many different bird species we also saw catfish and crabs . Amazing experience . Thank you !!

Nowadays in the world there are very few opportunities to see animals close up in the wild. Many people travel to Costa Rica for the Pura Vida and an opportunity to go back in time and experience what it might have been for explorers. Jose's Crocodile River Tour was recommended to me by an American expat co-worker that is living in Costa Rica. We made our trip from our AirBnB in Playa Tivives to Jose's Crocodile River Tour which is located in Tarcoles only a 35-40 minute drive away. Setting up the tour was very convenient for our family of 6 as I used Whatsapp to communicate with Sylvia, +506 8874 7641. Sylvia and Jose both speak and write such excellent English you would expect that they are from the States. Sylvia sent me the location through Whatsapp and we used the Waze app to get there which made it very convenient. When you get to Jose's Crocodile River Tour they have plenty of parking and bathrooms there. Our tour started out great as before we even got on the boat there was a crocodile across the walking plank to get on. I hadn't asked my co-worker a lot of questions about the tour so I thought we would maybe see a couple of crocodiles in the wild and I would be more than happy with that. During the tour we saw easily over 20-30+ crocodiles and many of them came right up to the boat so that you could even take selfies with them in the water. All of this is extremely safe as the boat I would compare to like a pontoon boat about 40 feet long. Jose is a character and tells great jokes while he is spotting wildlife along the way. Jose grew up in the town where the tour is located so it has that personal feel. I don't know how many languages that Jose speaks, but there was an older couple from France that was on the river tour with us and he seamlessly went back and forth between English, French, and Spanish. My kids loved that he had names for each of the crocodiles like Ariana Grande, Michael Jackson, Danny Devito, Shakira, Pretty Eyes or Pretty Eye, and so on. Jose's lifelong friend Gido steered the boat and also jumped out of the boat to feed the crocodiles to get them to come out of the water. The experience was absolutely amazing. Apart from seeing the crocodiles we also saw tons of iguanas, we saw a bird eating an iguana which was very Discovery channel esque. The crocodiles are massive. Probably the coolest experience was one of the crocodiles that they name Timido which was about 16-18 feet long you could see its shadow in the water by the boat as it slowly came up to greet us. This is one of the tours that if you are anywhere within 2 hours of Tarcoles you just have to do. Jose and his staff were amazing. They take credit cards which makes it really convenient so that you don't have to take cash. Because Jose is also from the area he also recommended us to a local restaurant after the tour where we had an excellent meal off of the special menu with fruit smoothies and something that everyone loved (Steven Lisa's which you can just search for on Waze). Jose even called ahead for us for a monkey tour on a boat that goes through Mangrove trees that was about 40 minutes away. Don't look at any other crocodile tours. This is the one that you want to do when you are in Costa Rica. Like Jose taught me on the tour the tour was very tuanes (too nice). Gracias Jose y Pura Vida!!! P.S. I totally forgot about the birds because I am really not a bird watcher, but all of the birds that we saw were absolutley amazing and we got so close to them. All of the colors and the ability to hear their bird calls made us feel a part of the jungle.

Tour was excellent, Jose our tour guide was funny and very knowledgeable. We got to see lots of birds, lizards and crocodiles. I would absolutely return and bring more friends on this tour. Jaco is very warm this time of year so I’d recommend you bring extra water on the tour besides the one bottle they give for you on the tour and lots of sunscreen.

Our host Jose greeted us and made us feel very welcome. Jimmy the captain and Jose the host were animal and wildlife enthusiasts. The tour itself was relaxing and amazing. We saw many crocodiles known and named by the captain and the tour guide. At points the captain would jump out of the boat and attract the attention of the crocs to feed them some chicken while our host explained the physical attributes and characteristics of each croc. Jimmy could also whistle call the Yellow-headed and Crested Caracara to come for a visit on shore. The tour took us up the Tarcoles River then we backtracked and went into the mangrove. They knew we were interested in birds and made sure that we saw as many birds as possible including finding the Olive-sided Flycatcher and Boat-billed Herons. We came away having added several more bird species to our list and having a better understanding of the importance of the mangrove and river ecosystems. Well done to both of them for their enthusiasm and their knowledge.

Jose is a local, and gives the tours himself. Great smaller/less crowded boats than many of the tours, highly knowledgeable. Safe/secure parking. We went 10 AM tour in Feb and were worried about heat, but it was fine with river/ocean breeze. We tend to be more "authentic experience" travellers, and figured this tour could be either great or hokey. Was a little bit of both, but definitely great to do. They jump off the boat feed the crocks on the river bank so you can see them only a few feet away. Some very large up to 1,200+ pounds.
