It was a wonderful experience with Mangrove Birding Tour. A really speical extraordinary tour, with so many interesting birds, crocodiles... It was the best idea to pick Randall and his team as a tour guide. So I highly recommend it.

If you are a serious birder, Randall Ortega is for you. He can pick up a bird species as quiet as a paper clip dropping. He is totally knowledgeable about the birds, the wildlife, and the Tarcoles River. You will most likely pick up several new "lifers" with Randall. Even if you are not into the birds as much, the boats are clean, efficient, and quiet, which if great when you are cruising through the wilderness which abounds here. Highly recommended for birders, nature watchers, and sight seers. Don't miss it!

We recently traveled as a family to Costa Rica for the first time. We met Randall as he was photographing a dragonfly in Manuel Antonio with a lens the size of a small child! He was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly and we ended up scheduling a Tarcoles River tour with him solely based on his personality and enthusiasm. Days later, he picked us up at our hotel, showed us his trove of books and artifacts at his office, and provided all of us with binoculars. We were traveling with five of our children and their spouses, and a one year old! The boat was covered and spacious. We motored slowly up the river as Randall took professional photos and identified hundreds of birds and animals, crocs, monkeys, lizards, and flora. We watched the sun set beautifully at the mouth of the river into the Pacific, then motored quietly in the dark through the mangroves to spot crocs and raccoons at night. We saw a nocturnal boat billed heron and a lesser anteater. This tour was an incredible addition to our trip! He took us to “The Oyster” for a lobster dinner to top it all off. Very professional and informed. Very personal and accommodating. (Brought toys William to play with in the boat!) Amazingly affordable. Don’t miss this tour if you’re anywhere near San Jose/ Manuel Antonio. We enjoyed it so much, we’re going back in four weeks to meet Randall for a tour of Carara!

As our holiday drew to an unexpected end due coronovirus, we had one last trip out before a hasty retreat home. We hadn't planned to be in this part of Costa Rica but it was ideally placed to get to San Jose for a flight home. It was the perfect end to our trip. Keen on birds, we had been told that we might get to see a Roseate Spoonbill, which was high on our hit list. We met Randall at first light, and he took us on a magnificent tour of the mangroves. We saw lots of wildlife but no spoonbill. Then as our tour ended, we spotted one flying by. Although we were on our way back, Randall turned the boat round and took us to the spot where the spoonbill roosted. He didn't have to do that and we were so happy and grateful that he did. He is an excellent guide who goes above and beyond to ensure his clients are happy. I thoroughly recommend his tour.
