Reckoned to be the birth place of His Holiness the 6th Dalai Lama, the Urgelling Gompa is about 03 kms from the main town of Tawang. Built about 600 years ago, this small monastery holds the great significance for the people of Buddhist faith from all over the world.
Its said that just before leaving for Lhasa in Tibet, he had strucked his walking stick just inside the monastery gate which eventually grew into a huge oak tree which stands tall even to this day.
The hand painted potraits of all the Dalai Lama is placed in the main hall and also to see and seek blessings is the imprints of feet and forehead of 6th Dalai Lama.
As our hotel was just a couple of minutes walk away from this monastery, we had a chance to visit in the early morning and the monk who is also a caretaker was very kind to show us around and tell us many fascinating stories or legends about the monastery.
Truly Blessed....!!!!

Buddhism strongly believes in reicarnations and rebirths. Every Dalai Lama is reincarnation of his previous existence. It is believed that the 6th Dalai Lama was born in the present Urgelling Gompa at Tawang.
At present the Gompa consists of a structure which is considered the birth place of His Holiness, the sixth Dalai Lama way back in 1683, a few religious structures and a tree, with multiple trunks. A plaque describing the place says that the sixth Dalai Lama, before leaving this place for Tibet, planted his walking stick and predicted that he would visit this place again when the three tree trunks , out of this stick, would be of equal height. They believe that the trunks attained equal height but in 1959 one of the trunks got broken due to strong wind and the present Dalai Lama came to Tawang, after his escape from Tibet and visited this place.
People of Tawang strongly believe in this legend and get strength out of it. The place presently is beautiful, though no lama lives here. Visitors come as this place has come on tourist map. When we visited it last week, the main building was closed as the caretaker had gone for an errand. Taking a round of the place, absorbing the quietness of the place and its surroundings, taking photographs is worthwhile.

The Gompa is just 5 km from the main market of Tawang. The place is very less frequented by tourists. The area is well maintained & clean. The Gompa is the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama & is revered by locals.

This gompa was located next to the hotel that I was staying in, and I just casually walked in during my evening stroll. It did not look very impressive compared to the other monasteries. It is a Gompa with a lot of history. The 6th Dalai Lama was born in a village close by which is also bears the same name. The Gompa was built in the year 1498. It appears that time in and around this Gompa is still frozen in the 15th century. The Gompa is surrounded by a “sacred grove “ consisting of old trees, which offers this place the peace and serenity. One could just sit there and easily forget the world outside.
