Jaswant Garh War Memorial, is dedicated to a war hero, Jaswant Singh Rawat who scarified his life for India, changing its fate. Place is well developed to depict the saga for war, its background and soldiers.
There is a canteen run by Army, which gives free tea to everyone. There is also a store where woolen caps, jackets, gloves etc are available.

War memorial for the indian hero Jaswant singh ji. Must see on your way to Tawang by road. Well kept war memorial reminding us about Indo China war. Explains how this one man army fought the Chinese.

This shrine known as Jaswant Garh is between Se La and Jang. The spot where he fought,a small temple has come up with a bust of his and many of his personal effects. A marble plaque commemorates him and 161 other men of his battalion who died in the battle of Nuranang,

Jaswant Garh will always be cherished by Indian armed forces and people of India as it was here that three brave soldiers of Indian army displayed the best any army can offer anywhere in the world and a handful of Indian soldiers, ill-equipped and without firepower neutralized the mighty Chinese attack, one after another and wrote the most stunning chapter of bravery here.
The 1962 Indo-China war was totally one sided and India was at the receiving end of it. This place shows that had Indian army matched resources for resources, the course of Indian history would have been different. After capture of Tawang and Chinese juggernaut marching on, they were tested for the first time here. A bunch of Indian soldiers repulsed massive onslaughts one after another and when confronted with a MMG with a sten gun these brave soldiers, Jaswant Singh Rawat, Trilok Singh Negi and Gopal Singh Gosain showed what bravery is. Almost empty handed they could neutralize the MMG and bring it over to Indian side and in the process taught Chinese a lesson for their lives.
Their are many legends which have come up over a period of time, including Jaswant's hanging, his head being taken away and brought back, his spirit camping at the place and what not, what is important is this was a place where bravery of the highest order was displayed, prompting people and army personnel to deify Jaswant Singh. Definitely feelings of people are understandable. Armed forces are making an effort to project this place as an example of bravery and discouraging the tradition of worship and religious overtones and this is very well appreciated. For armed forces bravery is what it is known for.
After the war, while RFN Jaswant Singh was conferred Mahavir Chakra, Negi and Gosain were honoured with Vir Chakras and the Battalion was conferred the only battle honour of 1962 war "Nuranang". One wishes that bravery could have justified bigger honour as well.
Presently the attraction has a display of statue of Jaswant Singh, a memorial which displays personal artifacts including his clothing, gun, bunkers of that time, kitchen, mess, this history of the battle, even Chinese grave site as they lost about 300 people here and a temple which has a tree of that time as well.
Overall an excellent place and every body who visit Tawang must halt at this place which is about 20 kilometers from Sela and 60 kilometers short of Tawang. From this place, one can see wonderful hills and mountains and the place has observation center from where important battle features can be see.
For refreshment, free tea is served by army and people can buy snacks at a very reasonable price. A unit canteen of army sells things which will make you remember the place for a long time.
I was lucky to be shown the place by a Captain of the army who has been entrusted with the place and could see a well made documentary about the battle. Tea and snacks, during the briefing was a wonderful privilege. I bought a Tshirt with Jaswant Garh boldly printed on it. I visited the place after 20 years and will cherish it for a long long time.

Rifleman (RFN) Jaswant Singh, number 4039009, was serving with the 4th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles. It was the final phase of the Sino-Indian War in November 1962. Even as his company was asked to fall back, Jaswant Singh remained at his post at an altitude of 10,000 feet and held back Chinese soldiers for three days assisted by two local Monpa girls named Sela and Nura (in some versions one or the other girl is mentioned). They set up weapons at separated spots and maintained a volume of fire that made the Chinese think they were opposed by a body of troops. Finally the Chinese captured the man who was supplying rations to Jaswant and he revealed to them that they were opposed by only one man.They attacked in force, Sela died in a grenade burst, Nura was captured and Jaswant supposedly shot himself with his last cartridge when he realized that he was about to be captured. It is alleged that the Chinese cut off Jaswant Singh's head and took it back to China. However, after the ceasefire, the Chinese commander, impressed by the soldier's bravery, returned the head along with a brass bust of Jaswant Singh. The bust, created in China to honor the brave Indian soldier, is now installed at the site of the battle.Jaswant Singh's saga of valor and sacrifice continues to serve as an inspiration to all army personnel posted in this sector. He has become a 'Baba', a saint. At the spot where he fought,a small temple has come up with a bust of his and many of his personal effects. A marble plaque commemorates him and 161 other men of his battalion who died in the battle of Nuranang, which was awarded to Garhwal Rifles as a battle honour. This shrine known as Jaswant Garh is between Se La and Jang. Indian Army personnel passing by this route traditionally pay their respects here, irrespective of rank. Jaswant is treated as if he is alive, his boots shined and his uniform and accoutrements cared for by Army personnel posted at the shrine. He has received all his promotions in time, and has reached the rank of Honorary Captain.

Visit this place and get to know the history of 1962 Indo-Sino war. Hero, Jaswant Singh was truly brave and what the Chinese did to him is inhuman. Make sure to ask more to the army personnel about the history of this place. The tree where he was hung is still there with a temple built around it. Must see while going from Bomdilla to Tawang.

A visit to this place will give you lots of first hand experience about the 1962 Indo China War. The army officials explain the details of the exhibits and spend time with the visitors clarifying all their doubts.
As the road to Tawang is in pathetic condition, it is better to visit this place while coming back from Tawang, the time taken to come back from Tawang being lesser than the time taken to go to Tawang.

On the way to Tawang we passed this place and paid a visit. It is a memorial in remembrance of Sri Jaswant Singh a soldier who resisted Chinese intrusion in the war of 1962. There is a temple made where the presiding deity is the great soldier. There is also a marked place where the dead Chinese soldiers are buried. Indian Army maintains the place and the Jawans posted there were very much cordial and offered us tea. These Jawans bear the brunt of harsh weather but are happy that their presence at this place makes us sleep peacefully at night.

i would not like to review this place as a tourist destination rather I would say that this place is holiest of all as our brave soldiers have laid down their lives defending the country. The place is well maintained by the Indian Army and one must pay homage to the brave soldiers. The army also has a light and sound show and I am not sure if shown to all. The army also has a cafeteria for all with tea/coffee snacks etc.

This place is en route Sela Pass. Stop here to read about the heroic story of Jawant Singh who defended this place against Chines army for nearly 2 days in the war of 1962.

Is private camping allowed in tawang? Is it dangerous to camping at secluded site near tawang? Please answer, I am planning a visit to Tawang.
