If you come to udupi, karkala is just 40 km away. You do visit this sight for way different experience. Such an amazing work done in a single stone around 42 feet tall statue of Lord Bahubali or gomateshwara. Statue is situated on hill and you can see karkala surrounding from that hill.
You will get direct bus to karkala from udupi service bus stop. It will take around hour to reach karkala from udupi. As soon as you reach karkala ask for 'gumata' or show the picture of the statue to anyone, they will show you the route which is walkable or you can take a tuck tuck to reach the sight. There is no entry fees to pay for this sight!

A long steep trek up a hill to the very top . View was fantastic tranquil and some-what enlightening. everyone should have such a trip once in a while . The statue is large and well worth the visit. my friends in India have a jewel of a country to treasure and should not look to the west (U.S.A.) as greed corrupts . This statue is of a man well worth learning from.

The place is very near a river, we strolled through the stairs in the evening (good lighting arrangements on some 200 stairs) , pleasant weather made the place look even more beautiful. Some tips :- (1) ensure u climb up the boundary wall of inner compound ( they have metal stairs).. The view is too good, (2) have bhel puri at stalls at the footsteps of the hill

After Shravanbelagola, the Bahubali statue in Karkala is second highest, 42 feet. It was erected in 15th century.
The statue is located on top of hill, which is at the outskirts of town. Auto-richsaw (3-wheeler cab) are available from the bus stand to reach at the bottom of the hill.
It takes around 10-15 minutes to reach at the top. Stairs are in good condition.
Snacks are also available at the bottom of the hill.
Other Bahubali statues are present in Venoor, Dharmasathala, Gomatgiri..

There is a steep set of stairs to the top. One can take special permission and there is a small road for cars too. Once there, the manastambh with yaksha greets you. Entrance is free but you may give a donation and get a receipt. The inner area is dominated aged by a 42ft high statue of Bahubali. An excavation 12years ago revealed statues of 24 tirthankaras which are kept at the back. As it is at a height bree, e is wonderful.

We visited the Ghomateshwara Statue... This is a stone statue carved from a single stone and standing 48 feet high. The statue is of Bahubali from the Jain religion and is completely nude. Periodically the statue is bathed in milk, etc. One will have to climb the hill or be able to drive up. Beautiful scenery and views from up the hill. A must see if you are visiting the area.

Will it be open at 7 am?

I'll be going to see the Jain Statue in Gomateshwara. I read the other comments , I have a hip problem, so 212 steps is not something I can do. Is there any other way to get to the top of the hill. Some other places have those guys with the chairs one can pay to ride on, does this place have that?
Thanks a million,
Sharon

You do not get careers. There is a passage that can potentially take you to close to the top by road. But I do not think this is completely without stairs. You may still need to climb up a few stairs. The day I went the road access gate was not open. So I had to climb up the all the stairs. If you have been to Shravanbelagola in Hassan this is much smaller a statue so may not really be that important. Shravanbelagola has people who can carry you to the statues.
