My tour of the island stopped here; for a small fee you can go to the salt pan and swim/float around. I wore my bathing suit under my clothes; bring a towel. It's cool to feel yourself floating in the water, almost whether you wan to or not. The salt stays on you, leaving my suit with a fine layer of grit. It's a good experience suitable for people of most ages. Afterwards you can walk up a dirt "path" to the top of the mine and have a great view of the salt pans on one side and the desert on the other.

We intended spending the day exploring Espargos but when we got there it was like a ghost town. The town square had three cafes all empty and we nearly got back on a bus to Santa Maria. Then I remembered reading about a beach Pedra dd Lume which apparantly had beach restaurants . We took a taxi 3 Euros and arrived ten minutes later. Like another world...not what I was expecting at all. I guess I expected a smaller version of Santa Maria. This however was a wild rocky desolate place with four half built houses rising above the bay on the skyline. One Roman Catholic Church standing prominently by the road painted blue and white and conspicuous in its decoration. But standing by the sea a large restaurant with tablecloths and waitresses and customers. Where had they all come from ?Coach parties it seemed. That's how the restaurant survives on visiting tours. It was a great lunch great service . Wine good beers cold. Toilets clean. And local cows ate the greenery around the car park...till chased of by the waitresses. After lunch we sat on a rocky outcrop and watched the local kids playing in the sea. The coach parties didn't seem interested in the beach but we thoroughly enjoyed it. We asked where the kids had come from for no village was evident...apparently the village is back inland out of sight.
If you like somewhere off the beaten track for a picnic or lunch in the restaurant with or without kids ..this is for you. No gift shops in sight and no beach sellers.

The body mask with mud is fun to do and rejuvenates the skin in minutes! As soon as it dries you can rub it and take a dip into the water and you feel an instant smooth, leaving the skin as silk. Careful: is salt water. Don't rub your eyes, but enjoy the automatic float that it provides. Fun and energizing! The excursion to the salk lake in Pedra do Lume is a must do in Ilha do Sal.

We are trying to be responsible tourists and support the local economy, but this place is owned by Italian. So we felt robbed with 5 Euro entrance per person expecting some nice views, but we found an empty area with almost no salt and just a pool we were not interested in, a café that our guide tried to let us spend more money at. Honestly, we found the area outside these salinas more interesting and there was more atmosphere in the nearest village than here and for free.

Worth the entry fee of a few euros. Fun to swim (float) around in the super salty water. Small shop and a bar is available. Showers available for a small fee

To swim (well, on the back as the water is so salt that you float) inside an extinct volcanoe is an experience to remember and Salinas is a place that is nice to visit.

Came here in the island tour and floated in the salt water which was nice and relaxing. The water was warm, but you should take water shoes with you as it’s a bit rocky. There are info boards at the entrance to explain the history of the place and show you what it looked like when it was a working mine.
Be warned though as they charge you €1 for 30 sec shower.

Visited the salt mines as part of our day trip around Sal, and was well worth the experience! Floated in water 27 times more saltier then the sea,in the eye of a volcano, an experience not many can say they have done! It leaves a salt coating over you but if you can bear it, the longer you leave it the better it is for you as it exfoliates your skin laving your skin really smooth. The water is bath warm, making it even more of a relaxing experience.
A must do when visiting Sal!
