About
Ikuntji Artists is a not-for-profit Indigenous-owned and -run art centre in Haasts Bluff. Situated in the spectacular West Macdonnell Ranges and only 58km off the sealed road Ikuntji Artists offers an insight into the creation of contemporary Indigenous artists from Central Australia. Ikuntji Artists was the first art centre established by women in the Western Desert Art Movement in 1992. Today Ikuntji Artists are represented in many national and international galleries and institutions. Their art is famous for bold colour choice, decisive brush strokes and a long legacy of internationally renowned artists. Ikuntji Artists welcomes visitors to the studio and gallery for a unique experience to browse and purchase authentic Aboriginal art ( acrylic painting, seed jewellery, prints, T-shirts, screen printed textiles, ethical merchandise ) directly from an Aboriginal-run and owned business. Come and visit us to see where the art is made!

I came to Ikuntji as a part of a group from the University of Queensland. We visited for a week and had a truly incredible experience- so much so that I intend to return! We were warmly welcomed and invited to participate in amazing cultural experiences. Chrischona, the art manager, fully explained how the art centre worked and it's relationship to the community. I very much recommend travellers in the area to stop by- especially to see the art! Our pockets were much lighter afterwards, especially as art history students who have a passion for art! 10/10 experience and recommend to all.

Ikuntji Artists-an ineffable experience; to have the opportunity to be welcomed into an immersive environment at the art centre and in the community. The Artists relationship to the land is both intimate and intense, reflective in the works that are bold, beautiful and lyrical. It was a privilege to work in the studio/environment.
I honestly can not wait to go back and visit- I hope it is not too long between trips.
I went out in the winter months (may-july) which provided cool and mild days a beautiful time to experience the landscape/ desert climate- I hear it is incredibly beautiful this time of year with all the wild flowers out!

Ikuntji is one of our favorite art centers. This is where women painters started and continue to thrive. The center offers the ability to see painters painting as well as meeting the amazing Dr Chrischona Schmidt who is a joy to talk to and her understanding of art and anthropology made our visit far more productive. The road suggests 4WD but seasonally you may make it with an AWD. The drive is spectacular. I strongly recommend anyone visiting the West McDonalds interested in art take this opportunity to visit. It took us about an hour from Glenn Helen Homestead. We will return.

Lovely gallery set in picturesque ranges. There is some great contemporary art here as well. It is easy to get to from the bitumen only a short run along corrugates. Not sure about the giant crucifix that has been erected on round hill...

Ikuntji Art Centre is an important hub of culture and art at Haast's Bluff. If you want to experience a remote region of Australia meet amazing artists and feel the wonder of such an incredible part of the world, get in touch with Chischona, the Art Centre manager, and see if there are any cultural tourism opportunities available when you visit. Buy some art too. I bought some beautiful painting while I was there in September and am loving living with them.

We were warmly welcomed by the manager who spent a lot of time explaining how the centre operates and how it fits into the community. We were fortunate to be able to observe one of their well known artists at work.
If you have an interest in Indigenous art its absolutely worthwhile making the drive to Haasts Bluff. Here you have the opportunity to purchase art directly from the community and get an understanding of how the arts and community life are interrelated.
You need to ring in advance to be sure its ok to visit and to check whether a transit permit is needed to visit. (Easy to obtain online if you need one)

Ikuntji Artists welcomes day visitors to the studio and gallery for a unique experience to browse and purchase authentic Aboriginal art (acrylic painting, seed jewellery, prints, T-shirts, screen printed textiles, ethical merchandise) directly from an Aboriginal-run and owned business.
Ikuntji Artists’ art centre is located at Haasts Bluff 230 km west of Alice Springs. The most direct route is from Alice Springs via Larapinta Drive and Glen Helen Resort, which includes 170 km of sealed bitumen, 60 km unsealed road. The road is 4WD recommended. Visiting us is a great day trip from Alice Springs, or find accommodation along the way (Glen Helen Resort, Two Mile, Ormiston Gorge and more).
Please contact Ikuntji Artists before making arrangements to visit and attain a free transit permit from Central Land Council.
