Fabulous museum filled with interesting artefacts of local rural and mountain life.
There’s everything here from
• farming tools and equipment including a plough that a person pushed rather than an animal pulled and a manual wheat threshing machine,
• old tools for smithing, drafting,
• household equipment including irons, pots, pans, pottery and other equipment used to make butter,
• looms and wool making tools,
• early firearms,
• wine presses,
• locks, keys and door knockers
• there are a couple of rooms set up displaying the type of furniture that people would have owned,
• personal effects like boots and shoes,
• there is even a coffin from 1784
• religious artefacts but the crowning pieces would be a set of vestments donated to the Sanctuary of Madonna di Tirano by Cardinal Richelieu in 1636, finely and richly embroidered.
The museum is in a lovely old building that overlooks the Piazza Basilica. It has beautiful painted ceilings, well worn stairs and polished wooden floors along with a lovely outdoor area that displays a kitchen garden (it’s a bit wild in parts).
Whilst in Italy I visited a number of different museums and this one was among my favourites, I think it’s a good museum because its different from the “ancient civilizations” museums. Congratulations to the small community of Tirano and its surrounding areas for preserving their unique heritage.
Entrance E2.00
Closed Mondays.
Opening hours are split with a break in the middle of the day. Check Museo Etnografico Tiranese website for up to date hours.
Very nice staff.

We thoroughly enjoyed a quick and very good value visit to this small museum. Lots to see relating to historical lifestyles of the area: agriculture, cooking, locks, lace, household antiques in many small rooms. Centrally located in the Piazza del Basilica, Tirano.

Ma com'è possibile che un museo così interessante, pubblicizzato ank sul giornale della provincia, sia aperto SOLO un paio d'ore solo al sabato pomeriggio? ?!!! ... è assurdo!
