The National Park takes its name from the lake commonly called White Lake. The name of the lake results from the ice cover that remains on it until May. The area is also known for its extinct volcanoes. The most recognized of them is the Korgo volcano, located at an altitude of approximately 2,460 m above sea level. The volcano itself is approximately 200 meters high and its impressive crater is 100 meters deep. In front of the entrance to the volcano there is a parking lot and stalls selling regional products. The entrance is well prepared, in part the route leads along concrete stairs. From the top of the volcano you can see the interior of the crater as well as a beautiful panorama of the area. We spent the night on the shore of the lake in one of the camps. It was a very successful overnight stay and the lake, despite the cold water, enchanted us with its beauty. The area of the National Park is an ideal place for various activities and contact with pristine nature. This National Park was established in 1994.

A bumpy track leads to this curious corner of Mongolia (we were grateful to go by jeep), where we can fully enjoy nature. From the lake to the volcano crater or the curious caves, it is worth taking several tours around the area. We stayed in the Khorgo ger, just a stone's throw from the route to the volcano crater. Be careful with free camping, it rained and we saw many places flooded.

One can swim in the Great White Lake during summer - best time is between 3 and 4pm - before this the water is cold, after 4pm it is very likely to rain. The landscape around the lake is stunning.
Try not to sleep in tourist camps but drive a little bit more on the easy side of the lake and you can find nomad families with guest gers.
The walk to the volcano crater is very easy - about 10 minutes easy climb. The hike around the crater takes about an hour. The view from the highest crater point (about 2200m) is rewarding.
The road to the park is mostly paved until the bridge before Tariat town. The it is quite bumpy but lasts for just half an hour.

Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake is a good birding place in Central Mongolia as well as beautiful natural getaway. In terms of birds, you will see thousands of Bar-headed Geese along with Swan Goose, Demoiselle Crane, Steppe Eagle and possibly Asian Dowitcher. Mongolica Safaris would recommend it to anyone.

Three day's drive from UB (Ulaanbaatar) is the extraordinarily savagely beautiful Khorog Volcano and White Lake National Park.
We visited the volcano, and stayed with a lovely nomad family. We stayed one night in a charming Ger beside a babbling brook.
The farmer cooked us the traditional Mongolian bbq of Mutton and vegetables (so tasty) to sustain us the next day as a picnic on our 14 hour road trip to Murun and Huvsgol/Hatgal. (Early up at 6 a.m.)
I would come back here in a heartbeat!

Beautiful nature, fascinating landscape. I traveled there many times since my childhood. All what you need is a car to go there, a tent to sleep at night and a good time to enjoy the nature. Please make sure to turn off your mobile, wifi and whatever connect you with the urban life. Because, this place is for travelers who really want to relax and enjoy the nature.

We stayed at the Maikhantolgoi ger camp right by the lake. The lake was pretty cold but beautifully situated between mountains by a gravel shoreline. The extinct volcano crater was impressive and the lava fields, while millions of years old, are still very obvious in the region.

Despite the reputation, this camp really doesn't deserve its fame at all. The staff were totally incompetent, it was a pain to ask for either hot or cold water to drink, receiving wood for the fire was a hassle, the answer to washing clothes was "in the lake", and the showers ran for a maximum of 1.5 minutes before going cold (with even this not being available at three occasions during out four day stay there). The view from the camp is by far the nicest of that from any of the camps, but is not worth the hassle of staying there.
The lake itself is not white at all, but creates a nice ambiance, which draws the throngs of tourists to the lake front, with over 20 yurt camps operating during summer months! there's also nice walking in the area, and some interesting volcanics..
All in all it's an easy place to get to, but not on of Mongolia's best!

Behind the Gobi desert - spend as much time as you can there - we loved this portion of our journey the most. Two nights is plenty to explore, enjoy nature and relax.
Likes:
- Horse ride to the volcano and back (a bit much for the body so consider one way and drive back)
- Swimming in the cool waters (in August)
- The refreshingly crisp evening air and nice weather overall here
- Beautiful views and not that many tourists
- Good hiking options too
Dislikes:
- No real options to explore the lake via craft
