We took a day trip to visit Aveiro and Costa Nova from Porto. This became the highlight of our entire trip. Take the bus from either Aveiro train station or the quay across the tourist office to Costa Nova. Buy the round-trip tickets 7.50 euros from the bus driver when on board. It takes about 30-40 minutes or so to arrive to this small seaside town (terminus). The old time Palheiros, the shelter for the fishermen or storage house for the machinery and animals used to haul the fishing boats to the beach now become the restaurants, shops and residence. Besides having a seafood meal, taking a coffee or buying souvenirs, people can go to the sand dunes or the beach to admire the sunset. The most pleasant thing to do here is to stroll on the patterned cobblestone walkway to take a lot of photos of these stripped houses.

If you are in Aveiro, I highly recommend a visit to Costa Nova, too. This village is simply amazing with special type of houses (they resemble a little on old houses from Normandy) and after them you can see the real Atlantic ocean with sand dunes.

It costs €7.50 for 2 persons ida e volta (return) from Aveiro railway station to Praia da Costa Nova, and it is worht it! The bus trip is intersting enough, but on arrival at Costa Nova you are immediately taken with the striped houses and other attractive aarchitecture. The bus terminates a stones throw from the tourist office - although you'll hardly need a map unless you mean to do some real long distance walking as everything is within walking distance and hardly taxing to find. There are some interesting restaurants and the odd bar and a few shops if seeking souvenirs and the like. The walkway along the river is very pleasant, as is the boardwalk along the coast of the ocean situated just over the small hill leading behind the buildings seen on entry to Costa Nova. It is a beautiful beach area with fine views over the Atlantic, ideal for a lazy afternoon listening to the ocean. Well worth a visit.

Nice place but a bit on the commercial side - you get the feeling that you're walking through a billboard advertizing tourism in Portugal and that behind the billboard is just open space.

So, you want a bit of sand and sea. You might not necessarily want to bathe (otherwise, you'll go somewhere less windy). You want a nice village, with picturesque houses and the choice between a meal by the river or a walk by the seaside. You want to stay away from touristy Aveiro. You want a place with absolutely nothing to do other than enjoy the open air and the sun.

There you have it. Costa Nova is great for a small escapade.

This was a quick drive from Aveiro. I wanted to see the houses in what appeared to be a very quaint little fishing village. I was disappointed at how commercialized it was and not prepared for that. We had a picnic, but did not walk much as it was a very cold and windy day. I'm glad we saw the striped houses though.

It was a short visit. Just drive thru. The little coloured wooden houses are something. Nice panorama and tranquil seaside area. I would go back in summer. Shoul be nice.

We stayed in Aveiro Portugal for one night in mid September and ventured to Costa Nova in the morning. Perfect time of year since the town was abandoned after the busy summer and only a few locals were at the cafe for morning cafe with nobody on the gorgeous Atlantic beach with wooden boardwalk when we were there. The homes on the bay side are so cute with their colorful stripes and fun typical beach side bungalows. We enjoyed our brief time walking around and imagining renting there for a week someday

This is a beautiful beach town with the ocean on one side and the bay on the other. The striped houses are so cute. There is a nice walking path next to the bay with some activities like mini golf and small snack stands. There are also very good restaurants and small shops. Don’t miss out on the trippa(crepes).
