A wonderful day out at the Azpeitia Rail Museum
May 2021
The location, in Azpeitia, is excellent, with parking nearby. The museum itself is full of interesting exhibits with very helpful and knowledgeable staff. The trip on the train itself takes about 45 minutes - period coaches pulled by a Manchester built engine (1898). On Sundays, there is normally only one trip but an extra one was added to cater for the extra visitors - those of us who had made the first trip were invited to the second, at no extra cost. I imagine like most rail museums this is first and foremost a labour of love and then a business.

Unmissable!
Nov 2019
This place is amazing. There is so much to see here, with beautifully restored railway carriages, engines, buses and trams, fascinating displays of machine tools, uniforms and station clocks. You get an idea of how much time and care has been put into the restorations when you see the older engines and carriages out on the line awaiting their own TCL. We were keen to try the ride on the steam train, but when we went on November 27th we learned that the last date for a train ride was November 3rd. However, the friendly and very helpful staff told us that next day there was to be a large organised visit and a train journey had been arranged for that group, and if we wished to come back then, we could tag along. So we went back on the 28th and had an absolutely brilliant day. As well as the incredible steam train ride, we also had a ride on an old tram and were given a demonstration of the machine tools in action.
It was a truly memorable experience and I would not have missed it for the world. And the price is unbelievable - 6€ each! ( without the train ride it would have only been 3€).
Don't miss it!

Outstanding museum in a small city
Jul 2019 • Couples
This museum is a must-see for all train buffs, and easily one of the best museums I’ve visited. That list does include Smithsonian Air and Space...

The collection is rich, there is much to see and everything is restored with love and care.

Highlight of the museum is 10 km round trip with a 1925 model steam train. Check the schedule for the train to see when it departs. It is a genuine coal fired steam train so if you are sensitive to the smoke, have a seat at the rear of the train.

Well worth the six euro entrance, we caught the first ride with the train (45 minutes to an hour in length), went out for lunch and came back when the museum opened again in the evening.

Great exhibition, friendly staff
Apr 2019 • Couples
Even though we have been to quite a few railway and tramway museums, this one seems to be the best museum so far. There are so many details like human-size puppets with costumes, books, newspapers etc. added within the waggons. There are different halls to visit, each one focussing on another subject. There is rolling stock from all over the world, everything explained at least in Basque and Spanish. Most of the texts are also available in English, but not all of them. The ladies guarding the exhibition were really and deeply friendly - we even got some cake because one of the ladies' birthday had been the day before. The exhibition is truly amazing - there could be more souvenirs to buy.

Real surprise, worth to visit
May 2018 • Couples
You don't expect such a museum in the middle of nowhere (with all respect and sympathy to Azpeitia)!
Excellent collection of rolling stock, very professional and interesting explanations - including in English, which is not a common case in local museums here.
Check the schedule of old train journey - it happens only on Saturday and Sunday, just two times a day.

An Azpeitia surprise
Aug 2014 • Couples
We travelled to Azpeitia to see the Loyola sanctuary, never expecting to find a railway museum. And very good it is too, a lot to see, ending with a short rail trip to the next village. Its not York, but pretty good for a small town, and not expensive.

Fun for All
Nov 2014 • Couples
We spent a rainy morning of November checking out the locomotives, carriages, black and white pictures, plaques, uniforms, clocks,... lots to see and very attractively presented. It was somewhat thrilling to find the old carriages from the Bilbao to Santurce line which were were use until 1992. So many hours in there as a student... Personally the highlight of the collection was the 1922 fire brigade car.

A must for train lovers, or families with kids
Aug 2014 • Solo
If you are in the area, and love trains, I would certainly recommend a visit to this museum. It has a nice collection of locomotives and cars, a very interesting workshop and some other old equipment. Before leaving, don't miss the uniform and clocks exhibition on the second floor of the main building.

This is fun. Railway Museum of the Basque Country,'from the oldest trains during the Industrial Revolution to the most modern used in the Bilbao underground nowadays.' Rather a grand little station and some huge sheds as well as displays in the yard. Some great rarities on show, well laid out, cheerful and helpful staff (many volunteers) including an amusing lady who drives an electric tram (streetcar, US usage). The highlight has to be a fussy little steam locomotive that hauls a narrow gauge train of carriages (about 1920 at a guess) for a couple of miles down a restored branch line.
Note that the museum is not open on Mondays and closes for a prolonged lunch!
There are lavatories but I did not see any baths, except for watering facilities for the rolling stock. Baby buggies can go round without much trouble.

Everything locomotive for a superb half day.
Jun 2014 • Couples
This is a grand visitation for all things locomotive,or as my femme quips, loco. Its certainly big-boys toys, with a rich collection of locos, coaches and tram cars with a tall imposing station housing small exhibits outside where sheds and hangers filled with everything locomotive.
Super half day visit. My femme was patient, just as i am on accompanied shopping visits. Ha, she gruffs.
