We lived in Platanias so only drove a short trip to Agia Lake and had been looking forward to a beautiful walk. Disappointing experience. It started with a beautiful walk where the lake could be seen, but the path became more and more overgrown. The path with wooden ramps was in disrepair and you can't go all the way around, so we turned around. We saw 1 turtle and some geese but not much bird life. Can only be recommended if you are going that way anyway by car or hiker and want to stop for a meal or have a packed lunch with you and want to sit at a bench and enjoy the view of the lake. We didn't try the coffees.

What a delightful walk round the lake. A board walk 2/3 of the way round then on to quiet lane. Not much bird life as it’s early October but did see a Heron,an Egret & a toad. Our dog loved it. We had a nice coffee before we started in the Enasma cafe with lovely views over the lake

The site is just 20 min. From Chania. Very nice place, small natural lake, many kinds of birds and plants.

Who would have thought, just a few kilometres inland and away from the hustle and bustle of the coastal resorts, is this wonderful oasis of calm and quite.
We discovered it because we had a hire car, but I understand that the Tourist Train does a trip here which makes it more accessible. There are a couple of cafe/restaurants, we especially liked the "Enasma" with its gardens, water features and grounds.
Plenty of nice scenery to admire as well as wild life to look at or look for, along with nice walking paths around the lake.
Definitely worth a visit.

A wonderful artificial pond, listed as a NATURA 2000 for its value for the biodiversity of Crete, and the place where the first hydroelectric plant was constructed.

Went here today and were fortunate to see Little Crakes, Marsh Harrier, Blackcap, terrapins and lizards.
Board walk path around most of the lake, but not signposted very well. We parked at one of the excellent cafe/restaurants and walked backwards and forwards for about ten minutes trying to find the walk around the lake.
Supposed we are used to bird reserves in the UK with their excellent information and resources. We saw two information boards with interesting facts about the species found there, but no information on walking around the lake. The boardwalk is great, with observation platforms every so often, then it just ends and you have to work out how to get back to your car. We took a wrong turning that was a dead end, eventually found the road that took us back to the car. Lovely varied habitats including reed-bed, woodland, river and of course lake.
As long as you’ve got a good sense of direction this is a lovely location for birdwatching. Get there early as it can get busy with people coming for a stroll . It’s not a huge site, a couple of hours to work round it all slowly at birdwatching pace.
Gorgeous setting with mountain views.

Quite a gem of a birdwatching site. Went in late October. Swallows and martins passing through with falcons, buzzards, kingfishers and a wide variety of water birds easily seen. Two restaurants to choose from make it a good place to go for a relaxing day with nature.

Lake Agias:
Lovely to walk around the lake on nice wooden paths, so wheelchair friendly.
Definitely a quiet area, so not ideal with children. Dogs are not allowed.
If you're quiet enough you'll see a lot of turtles & birds!

Café:
Lovely & cosy place to have a fresh drink or eat something. Situated just at the entrance of lake agias so easy to find since this is the only cafe at the lake.
Very friendly staff which do not speak very well english, however they will help you as much as they can.
We had a big "ouzomata" as platter for €15 (one of the "starters" on their menu card), which was more than enough for both of us and really nice! You'll also get some cold water and a fruit jelly free of charge.

We would definitely recommend this place, but hope this paradise will stay preserved from the mass tourism!

A perfect day for a walk around Lake Agias. Wooden paths almost all around the lake. Play ground for kids at the restaurant. Many different types of ducks and birds

A nice new boardwalk takes you about two-thirds of the way around this lake which is nice for watching birds (though summer not the best time) and dragonflies.
