This place is a must see in Chambery ! Not only it is a symbol of the city, but it is also a symbol of the region of Savoy itself ! I lived in Chambery for more than 2 years now, and I visited this place many times now, as I really like it. It was indeed from the XIVth century to the XVIth century the main residence of the Counts and Dukes of Savoy ! Today it hosts the Prefecture of the department of Savoy ! A big part of it was however destroyed by a fire, and was partly rebuilt in the XIXth century by French emperor Napoleon III. It is a beautiful place in the city, probably the most important ! It is a mix of medieval and modern architecture. It is completely free to visit the museum inside it, where you can see old maps, coins and artefacts from the castle. You can also go around the castle, and visit the park next to it, where you will have a nice view on the beautiful medieval tower of the castle. And once time every year, during the "Journees du Patrimoine", you can also visit some closed places of the castle, like the "Sainte-Chapelle", the main chapel of the castle, where was once stored the Holy Shroud (which is today in Turin). If you love history, architecture and culture, you will like your visit to this beautiful castle, as it is the main symbol of the city and the history of Savoy.

Passionate guide, semi-existing castle, a little humidity, a lot of history, few rooms, large parking (reserved for the prefecture be careful, after we came on foot, to try ). Summary of 1000 years = 10 centuries = 1 millennium of Savoy in 7min (bet almost held). No time to go to the bathroom or arrive late: paper list.
The holy shrine is a must-see of the visible (itself bypassable by the way): 4m23x1m10, after which it may not be true.
Many chairs for so few (journalist(s)), right?
The gentleman who rings the bells is EXCELLENT, goes from Brother Jacques to “Heins” without problems. Don't come for that, either, carbon fiber transmission.

In hindsight, pleasant but circumventable, except the guide which is unavoidable

You can visit several parts of this chateau but the highlight is the holy chapel. It contains what is reputed to be the best quality Italian trompe d'oeil (optical illusion) painting work in Chambery. It is almost unbelievable that you are not looking at real 3D stonework. Another item of interest is a replica of the Turin Shroud, which was once located in this chapel before being removed to Italy. The guide pointed out where the head and feet of Christ are supposed to have left their mark on the cloth. She did admit that the genuine nature of the original item (or otherwise) is largely a question of faith, since carbon-dating of the cloth suggested that it was manufactured in the middle ages.

A couple of balsa models in the entry room is about it. I am not joking. The chateau is accessible only with a guide. Like i dont need or want one. Better things to do in chambery.

We were here in 5th August 2015. The guide of the castel was supposed to be there at 11:00 while she didn't show up until 11:05 (with no apology of being late). At the same time our 2 years old child wanted to go to toilet and we asked her if it's ok to wait for 2 minutes, let the child finish the toilet. She refused directly and began to introduce the castel to other visitors! Totally ignoring us! When we came back from the toilet at 11:06, she was already gone with other visitors. We were very angry not only because of her terrible attitude but also because she made our child feel that it's her who did something wrong! We returned the tickets. This was the worst travel experience ever.

Guided tour in French mostly, but the visit is really worth a trip. the guides are really welcoming and informative and it's a treat to see the different aspect of the historic castle of the house of Savoie. The "sainte-chapelle" is a must-see.

I’d forgotten where Savoire used to be. A visit to this castle the one time home of the dukes of savoire helped remind me.

A pleasant way to spend an hour or so and learn a little more about this fantastic region.

The castle (originally XIe siècle) dominates the city centre. It is impressive to see and to visit.
It is at the side of the old part of the city.
From the pictures I add you can see it is in original shape and worthwhile. Although it is a mix of styles of the centuries.

In its tower is currently installed a large carillon with 70 bells. And the music is pleasant to listen.

The political administration of the department of Savoie is located in the castle (Préfecture de la Savoie, du conseil général de la Savoie et de l'Académie de Savoie), and it is open for tours.
If you visit Chambéry, this is a must.

Just got through coming back from a visit to the Chateau des Ducs de Savoie, and yes, you have to have a guide, I think it's because The Chateau is the administrative part of the Savoie region. There were also musicians rehearsing before a jazz festival today, for free. There is a lot of history and Chambéry is more important than you can think. It's true there was not a lot to see, almost nothing, but my friends and I are opened minded tourists, and we thought it was worth it. Well, the view from one of the towers is breath-taking.
